Book excerpt: The first edition of The Welfare State and Canadian Federalism focused on the impact of federalism on social policy during a period of economic growth and expanding social expenditures. The revised edition extends the analysis by asking how the federal syatem has shaped the social policy response to neo-conservatism, recession, and restraint. Download or read book A Justifiable Obsession written by Penny Bryden and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘A Justifiable Obsession’ traces the evolution of Ontario’s relationship with the federal government in the years following the Second World War. Through extensive archival research in both national and provincial sources, P.E. Bryden demonstrates that the province’s successive Conservative governments played a crucial role in framing the national agenda – although this central relationship has received little attention compared to those that have been more volatile. As such, Bryden’s study sheds light on an important but largely ignored chapter in Canadian political history. Bryden focuses on the politicians and strategists who guided the province through the negotiation of intergovernmental economic, social, and constitutional issues, including tax policies, the design of the new social welfare net, and efforts to patriate the constitution. Written in a lucid, engaging style that captures the spirit of the politics of postwar Canada, ‘A Justifiable Obsession’ is a significant contribution to our understanding of Ontario’s politics and political culture.

Download or read book The Tainted Blood Tragedy in Canada written by Gilles Paquet and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the tainted blood tragedy that Canada experienced in the latter part of the 20th century. It presents an argument in brief about the tragedy being the result of a cascade of pathologies of governance. Then it challenges the conventional wisdom and its explanation boiling down to four ill-founded accusations. After proposing a systemic reconstruction of the tragedy, it develops some responses to the systemic governance failures. The conclusion takes stock of the modest progress in the repairs of the toxic system in place, and the postface focuses on the demise of critical thinking as a fundamental source of the crisis and on a need to refurbish critical thinking if advances are to be expected in what remains a work in progress.

Download or read book Health and Wealth written by Monica Townson and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1999 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of life in a society is one of the most powerful determinants of health: poverty and unemployment, poor housing and lack of education, child poverty and problems in early childhood development all take their toll. Researchers are now discovering that it's not the richest countries that have the best health: it's the most egalitarian. Monica Townson warns that failure to address social and economic inequality will have a serious impact on the health of Canadians. Inequalities have been increasing over the past decade as rates of poverty, unemployment and homelessness have risen. The gap between rich and poor in Canada is widening and Townson maintains this has dangerous implications for our health. Health and Wealth looks at the effects of inequality in Canada and discusses the kinds of co-ordinated efforts that would be needed at all levels of government to achieve better health for all citizens.
