Book Interpreting Chekhov

Download or read book Interpreting Chekhov written by Geoffrey Borny and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's contention is that Chekhov's plays have often been misinterpreted by scholars and directors, particularly through their failure to adequately balance the comic and tragic elements inherent in these works. Through a close examination of the form and content of Chekhov's dramas, the author shows how deeply pessimistic or overly optimistic interpretations fail to sufficiently account for the rich complexity and ambiguity of these plays. The author suggests that, by accepting that Chekhov's plays are synthetic tragi-comedies which juxtapose potentially tragic sub-texts with essentially comic texts, critics and directors are more likely to produce richer and more deeply satisfying interpretations of these works. Besides being of general interest to any reader interested in understanding Chekhov's work, the book is intended to be of particular interest to students of Drama and Theatre Studies and to potential directors of these subtle plays.

Book Interpreting the Self

Download or read book Interpreting the Self written by Diane Bjorklund and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-04-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious study, Diane Bjorklund explores the historical nature of self-narrative. Examining over 100 American autobiographers published in the last two centuries, she discusses not only well-known autobiographies such as Mark Twain and Andrew Carnegie but also many obscure ones such as a traveling book peddler, a minstrel, a hotel proprietress, an itinerant preacher, a West Point cadet, and a hoopskirt wire manufacturer. Bjorklund draws on the colorful stories of these autobiographers to show how their historical epoch shapes their understandings of self. "A refreshingly welcome approach to this intriguing topic. . . . [Bjorklund's] extensive and systematic approach to her source material is impressive and enriches our understanding of this essential subject."—Virginia Quarterly Review "Bjorklund studies both famous and obscure writers, and her clear prose style and copious quotations provide insight into the many aspects of the changing American self." —Library Journal

Book excerpt: Modern environmentalism has come to realize that many of its key concerns—“wilderness” and “nature” among them—are contested territory, viewed differently by different people. Understanding nature requires science and ecology, to be sure, but it also requires a sensitivity to history, culture, and narrative. Thus, understanding nature is a fundamentally hermeneutic task.

Book EBOOK Interpreting Statistical Findings A Guide For Health Professionals And Students

Download or read book EBOOK Interpreting Statistical Findings A Guide For Health Professionals And Students written by Jan Walker and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2010-07-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at those studying and working in the field of health care, including nurses and the professions allied to medicine, who have little prior knowledge of statistics but for whom critical review of research is an essential skill. The book will provide support for those conducting literature-based projects which require the student to review evidence generated through empirical investigations. Evidence-based projects or assignments have, for several years formed the basis of a final year independent study for most honours degrees, and increasing numbers of masters programmes, in health care. Working from practical examples, exercises and illustrations, explanations will be given in (relatively) straightforward conceptual terms. This book is intended as a practical guide and reference book. Bullet points and illustrations will be used wherever possible, and dense text avoided. A detailed glossary of statistical concepts and terms will be provided as an additional resource for learning. The emphasis throughout will be to enable the student to transfer their learning to the research reports they are reading. Using fundamental criteria and aided by a list of key questions, students will be able to make an informed judgement about the quality of the research findings. The examples used will be based closely on actual research data, but essential details will be changed. This approach is intended to avoid problems of copyright and overcome the ethical problem of challenging published research in a forum where there is no right of the authors to reply. As follow-up exercises, students will be directed to references where they can test out their learning on ‘real’ examples, guided by key questions.

Book INTERPRETING THE BIBLE

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward D. Andrews
  • Publisher : Christian Publishing House
  • Release : 2016-07-30
  • ISBN : 1945757078
  • Pages : 490 pages

Download or read book INTERPRETING THE BIBLE written by Edward D. Andrews and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "INTERPRETING THE BIBLE: Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics" is a seminal book crafted by Edward D. Andrews to guide students, ministers, and anyone interested in understanding the Bible more deeply. This book is unique in its approach, as it not only delves into the principles of biblical interpretation inherent in the Bible but also paves the way for readers to interpret, teach, and preach God's Word with profound insight. Understanding the Bible goes beyond surface reading—it requires a careful analysis of its genres, historical context, and language. This book serves as a foundational guide for such an examination, requiring no prior understanding of biblical languages or hermeneutics, yet empowering the reader with a working knowledge of biblical interpretation. "Biblical Hermeneutics," as Andrews elucidates, is both a science and an art, forming a crucial component of theological sciences. This truth is particularly salient for conservative Protestantism, which holds the Bible as the sole authoritative voice of God to mankind. In "INTERPRETING THE BIBLE: Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics," Andrews sheds light on the multifaceted nature of biblical interpretation. He instructs readers on how to discern the various biblical genres and understand the original meanings intended by the Bible authors from a conservative grammatical-historical perspective. But more than that, he guides readers on how to apply these timeless truths to their own lives. This book is more than a guide; it's an invitation to journey deeper into the realms of biblical understanding. It is a must-read for anyone who seeks to broaden their comprehension of the Bible, interpret its sacred teachings accurately, and apply its profound wisdom to everyday life.
