Book Intelligent Computational Optimization in Engineering

Download or read book Intelligent Computational Optimization in Engineering written by Mario Koeppen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often come across computational optimization virtually in all branches of engineering and industry. Many engineering problems involve heuristic search and optimization, and, once discretized, may become combinatorial in nature, which gives rise to certain difficulties in terms of solution procedure. Some of these problems have enormous search spaces, are NP-hard and hence require heuristic solution techniques. Another difficulty is the lack of ability of classical solution techniques to determine appropriate optima of non-convex problems. Under these conditions, recent advances in computational optimization techniques have been shown to be advantageous and successful compared to classical approaches. This Volume presents some of the latest developments with a focus on the design of algorithms for computational optimization and their applications in practice. Through the chapters of this book, researchers and practitioners share their experience and newest methodologies with regard to intelligent optimization and provide various case studies of the application of intelligent optimization techniques in real-world applications. This book can serve as an excellent reference for researchers and graduate students in computer science, various engineering disciplines and the industry.

Book Advanced Design of Mechanical Systems From Analysis to Optimization

Download or read book Advanced Design of Mechanical Systems From Analysis to Optimization written by Jorge A.C. Ambrosio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multibody systems are used extensively in the investigation of mechanical systems including structural and non-structural applications. It can be argued that among all the areas in solid mechanics the methodologies and applications associated to multibody dynamics are those that provide an ideal framework to aggregate d- ferent disciplines. This idea is clearly reflected, e. g. , in the multidisciplinary applications in biomechanics that use multibody dynamics to describe the motion of the biological entities, in finite elements where multibody dynamics provides - werful tools to describe large motion and kinematic restrictions between system components, in system control where the methodologies used in multibody dynamics are the prime form of describing the systems under analysis, or even in many - plications that involve fluid-structure interaction or aero elasticity. The development of industrial products or the development of analysis tools, using multibody dynamics methodologies, requires that the final result of the devel- ments are the best possible within some limitations, i. e. , they must be optimal. Furthermore, the performance of the developed systems must either be relatively insensitive to some of their design parameters or be sensitive in a controlled manner to other variables. Therefore, the sensitivity analysis of such systems is fundamental to support the decision making process. This book presents a broad range of tools for designing mechanical systems ranging from the kinematic and dynamic analysis of rigid and flexible multibody systems to their advanced optimization.

Book Development of a Road Roughness Profile Delineation Procedure

Download or read book Development of a Road Roughness Profile Delineation Procedure written by M. Divinsky and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several approaches to delineation of statistically homogeneous units for pavement response variables in a selected property, and one of them, the cumulative difference approach, is presented in the AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures (1993) This method is a relatively powerful analytical one, when the nature of the measurements involves delineating homogeneous units with different mean value levels. However, there are other cases when the delineation procedure should be applied for data with different levels of scatter characteristics, such as with standard deviation or range. This modified cumulative difference approach is fully described in this paper with application to delineating statistically homogeneous units along a road profile of roughness measurements. The suggested approach provides an advantage in delineating scattered characteristics and shows a high level of efficiency as evidenced by practical applications. The results presented are expected to serve as a basis for enhancing quality control criteria in the construction, as well as in the maintenance stages.Another goal is to serve any advanced pavement management system (PMS).
