Book Interpretive Planning for Museums

Download or read book Interpretive Planning for Museums written by Marcella Wells and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum professionals' increased focus on visitors in recent years has been demonstrated by, among other things, the enhanced practice of evaluation and the development of interpretive plans. Yet too often, these efforts function independent of one another. This book helps museums integrate visitors' perspectives into interpretive planning by recognizing, defining, and recording desired visitor outcomes throughout the process. The integration of visitor studies in the practice of interpretive planning is also based on the belief that the greater our understanding, tracking, and monitoring of learners, the greater the impact museums will make on public understanding of the science and humanities disciplines. An approach that advocates thoughtful and intentional interpretive planning that constantly integrates visitor perspectives is the next step in working with, rather than for, our communities; a step toward truly becoming visitor-centered and impactful as essential learning institutions of the 21st century.

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Costumed Interpretation written by Jackie Lee and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Practical Guide to Costumed Interpretation is just that – a book that takes you through the various stages of becoming an historical costumed interpreter. Jackie Lee has worked in this area of heritage interpretation for over twenty years and sets out what it takes to develop the persona for a character from the past. The methods she shares focus on first-person delivery of an historic character. Lee introduces the reader to two new methods she has developed that support character creation and delivery. The "three realms" highlight the importance of research and making the character believable and the "crystal ball" which enables the costumed interpreter to look into the future when the occasion demands it. The book is full of practical help on all aspects of the costumed interpreter’s craft including costume making and how to prepare personally for stepping out full of confidence ready to engage visitors of all ages. A Practical Guide to Costumed Interpretation is aimed at those interested in becoming costumed interpreters as well as those who wish to develop or revise their techniques. It will also be useful for students of museum practice and heritage interpretation considering costumed interpretation as a means of on-site delivery.

Book Managing and Interpreting D Day s Sites of Memory

Download or read book Managing and Interpreting D Day s Sites of Memory written by Geoffrey Bird and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than seventy years following the D-Day Landings of 6 June 1944, Normandy's war heritage continues to intrigue visitors and researchers. Receiving well over two million visitors a year, the Normandy landscape of war is among the most visited cultural sites in France. This book explores the significant role that heritage and tourism play in the present day with regard to educating the public as well as commemorating those who fought. The book examines the perspectives, experiences and insights of those who work in the field of war heritage in the region of Normandy where the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy occurred. In this volume practitioner authors represent a range of interrelated roles and responsibilities. These perspectives include national and regional governments and coordinating agencies involved in policy, planning and implementation; war cemetery commissions; managers who oversee particular museums and sites; and individual battlefield tour guides whose vocation is to research and interpret sites of memory. Often interviewed as key informants for scholarly articles, the day-to-day observations, experiences and management decisions of these guardians of remembrance provide valuable insight into a range of issues and approaches that inform the meaning of tourism, remembrance and war heritage as well as implications for the management of war sites elsewhere. Complementing the Normandy practitioner offerings, more scholarly investigations provide an opportunity to compare and debate what is happening in the management and interpretation at other World War II related sites of war memory, such as at Pearl Harbor, Okinawa and Portsmouth, UK. This innovative volume will be of interest to those interested in remembrance tourism, war heritage, dark tourism, battlefield tourism, commemoration, D-Day and World War II.
