Book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease

Download or read book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease written by Thomas Seyfried and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-05-18 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses controversies related to the origins of cancer and provides solutions to cancer management and prevention. It expands upon Otto Warburg's well-known theory that all cancer is a disease of energy metabolism. However, Warburg did not link his theory to the "hallmarks of cancer" and thus his theory was discredited. This book aims to provide evidence, through case studies, that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease requring metabolic solutions for its management and prevention. Support for this position is derived from critical assessment of current cancer theories. Brain cancer case studies are presented as a proof of principle for metabolic solutions to disease management, but similarities are drawn to other types of cancer, including breast and colon, due to the same cellular mutations that they demonstrate.

Book Cross Talk and Interaction between Endocrinology and Urology Challenges and Opportunities

Download or read book Cross Talk and Interaction between Endocrinology and Urology Challenges and Opportunities written by Xiao-qiang Liu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-22 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genitourinary system is closely related to the endocrine system. Some genitourinary organs are endocrine organs themselves. Over the past decades, the diagnosis and treatment on both endocrine and urological diseases have developed rapidly. Concerns regarding the normal growth, development, and physiological functions of the genitourinary system, as well as the pathogenesis and treatment of urinary diseases have been raised. The diseases from these two different systems belong to the specialties of internal medicine and surgery respectively. For example, prostate is regulated by androgen originates from testis, adrenal and even malignancies. Androgen deprivation therapy has definite effect on prostatic adenocarcinoma but may also develop castration resistance. The disorders of gonad and reproductive health are also implicated in hormone regulation, such as delayed hypogonadism. Many diseases such as Cushing's syndrome and aldosteronism are transdisciplinary. However, the research on the normal physiological function, and the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of both systems are short of cross-integration, resulting in a lack of close cooperation between physicians and surgeons. We are calling for more attention on the joint participation in multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment, as well as collaboration on basic research in the field of genitourinary and endocrine diseases.

Book Autophagy Cancer Other Pathologies Inflammation Immunity Infection and Aging

Download or read book Autophagy Cancer Other Pathologies Inflammation Immunity Infection and Aging written by M. A. Hayat and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging is an eleven volume series that discusses in detail all aspects of autophagy machinery in the context of health, cancer, and other pathologies. Autophagy maintains homeostasis during starvation or stress conditions by balancing the synthesis of cellular components and their deregulation by autophagy. This series discusses the characterization of autophagosome-enriched vaccines and its efficacy in cancer immunotherapy. Autophagy serves to maintain healthy cells, tissues, and organs, but also promotes cancer survival and growth of established tumors. Impaired or deregulated autophagy can also contribute to disease pathogenesis. Understanding the importance and necessity of the role of autophagy in health and disease is vital for the studies of cancer, aging, neurodegeneration, immunology, and infectious diseases. Comprehensive and forward-thinking, these books offer a valuable guide to cellular processes while also inciting researchers to explore their potentially important connections. Presents the most advanced information regarding the role of the autophagic system in life and death Examines whether autophagy acts fundamentally as a cell survivor or cell death pathway or both Introduces new, more effective therapeutic strategies in the development of targeted drugs and programmed cell death, providing information that will aid in preventing detrimental inflammation Features recent advancements in the molecular mechanisms underlying a large number of genetic and epigenetic diseases and abnormalities, including atherosclerosis and CNS tumors, and their development and treatment Includes chapters authored by leaders in the field around the globe—the broadest, most expert coverage available

Book Progress in Metabolic Syndrome Research

Download or read book Progress in Metabolic Syndrome Research written by George T. Ulrig and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease is the leading cause of death for adults in developed countries, many medical studies focus on treating or preventing heart disease and stroke. The metabolic syndrome, a collection of unhealthy body measurements and abnormal laboratory test results, may identify persons at high risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Aggressive lifestyle modification and possible use of medications to treat the conditions that make up the metabolic syndrome may reduce a person's chances of developing heart disease or stroke. The metabolic syndrome has also been called syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome.

Book The Heterogeneity of Cancer Metabolism

Download or read book The Heterogeneity of Cancer Metabolism written by Anne Le and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic alterations in cancer, in addition to being the fundamental drivers of tumorigenesis, can give rise to a variety of metabolic adaptations that allow cancer cells to survive and proliferate in diverse tumor microenvironments. This metabolic flexibility is different from normal cellular metabolic processes and leads to heterogeneity in cancer metabolism within the same cancer type or even within the same tumor. In this book, we delve into the complexity and diversity of cancer metabolism, and highlight how understanding the heterogeneity of cancer metabolism is fundamental to the development of effective metabolism-based therapeutic strategies. Deciphering how cancer cells utilize various nutrient resources will enable clinicians and researchers to pair specific chemotherapeutic agents with patients who are most likely to respond with positive outcomes, allowing for more cost-effective and personalized cancer therapeutic strategies.

Book Cell Death Signaling in Cancer Biology and Treatment

Download or read book Cell Death Signaling in Cancer Biology and Treatment written by Daniel Johnson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key goal in the treatment of cancer is to achieve selective and efficient killing of tumor cells. The aim of Cell Death Signaling in Cancer Biology and Treatment is to describe state-of-the-art approaches and future opportunities for achieving this goal by targeting mechanisms and pathways that regulate cancer cell death. In this book, molecular defects in cell death signaling that characterize cancer cells, including dysregulation of cell death due to overexpression/hyperactivation of oncoproteins, as well as the loss of tumor suppressor proteins will be described. The potential for targeting microRNAs will be discussed. Multiple chapters will describe preclinical and clinical approaches that are currently being used to target epigenetic modifications, DNA repair pathways, and protein chaperones, as a means of provoking tumor cell death. Finally, the development and application of novel agents and approaches for targeting specific components of cell death signaling pathways and machinery will be reviewed.
