Book Social Perception from Individuals to Groups

Download or read book Social Perception from Individuals to Groups written by Steven J. Stroessner and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on social perception, the processing of information about people. This issue has always been central to social psychology, but this book brings together literatures that in large part have been separated by the nature of the social target that is involved. Historically, research on person perception developed quite independently from research involving perceptions of groups. Whereas the former research generally focused on the cognitive processes involved in forming impressions of individuals, research on group perception examined the content of stereotypes and the conditions under which they are used in social judgment. There was been little overlap in the theories and methods of these subfields, and different researchers were central in each. The chapters in this book highlight research and theorizing about social perception, exploring the processes involved in social perception from persons to groups. Some chapters describe work that was originally developed in person perception but is being extended to understanding groups. Other chapters illustrate how some processes studied in the domain of stereotyping also affect perceptions of individual persons. Finally, other chapters focus on variables that affect perceptions and judgments of both individuals and groups, proving opportunities for greater recognition of the common set of factors that are central to all types of social perception. This groundbreaking book highlights the research contributions of David L. Hamilton, whose research has played a central role in uniting these previously independent areas of research. It provides essential reading for upper-level courses on social cognition or social perception and could also serve as an auxiliary text in courses on interpersonal perception/relations and courses on stereotyping/intergroup relations.

Book Interpersonal Perception Second Edition

Download or read book Interpersonal Perception Second Edition written by David A. Kenny and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2019-12-25 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People make judgments about others all the time, often without realizing they are doing so. How are interpersonal impressions formed? How accurate are our perceptions of other people's traits--and our own? In this major revision of his landmark work, David A. Kenny provides a reader-friendly examination of these and other critical questions, identifying key components that shape impressions and their accuracy. Topics include how to estimate perceiver, target, and relationship effects; the extent to which different perceivers see a target in the same way; the impact of group membership and stereotypes; and whether others see us as we see ourselves. Implications for interpersonal relationships and social behavior are highlighted. New to This Edition *Virtually a new book; incorporates 25 years of theoretical, empirical, and methodological advances. *New and greatly expanded topics, including first impressions, individual differences in accuracy, implicit measures, and narcissism. *Grounded in a reformulated conceptual model. *More accessible--uses nontechnical language, humor, popular culture, and simplified figures to elucidate complex ideas. *End-of-chapter "Practical Suggestions" apply the science to real-world social situations.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979, Perceiving Others is an excellent, short introduction to the area of social psychology known as ‘person perception’, ‘social perception’ or ‘impression formation’ – how people interpret each others’ moods, predict each others’ behaviour and sum up each others’ characters. The way people see each other determines the way they behave towards each other making the study of ‘person perception’ essential to the understanding of social behaviour. Mark Cook poses three questions about how people form opinions of others: what are the processes involved, what information is used and how, and how accurate are they? He provides an answer to these questions in the three main sections of the book, giving a comprehensive survey of the theory and research arising from the issues involved. The topics covered include the meaning of trait descriptions, intuition, social skill and non-verbal communication, the impression formation paradigm, stereotypes, implicit personality theories, attribution theory, Cronbach’s components and psychiatric diagnosis. By drawing many of his illustrations from everyday encounters, the author effectively bridges the gap between theory and reality to create a thoroughly readable and comprehensible study.

Book Social Relations Modeling of Behavior in Dyads and Groups

Download or read book Social Relations Modeling of Behavior in Dyads and Groups written by Thomas E. Malloy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Relations Modeling of Behavior in Dyads and Groups covers software, interpersonal perception (adult and children), the SRM with roles (e.g. in families), and applications to non-human research. Written in an accessible way, and for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers, author Thomas E. Malloy strives to make inherently abstract material and unusual statistics understandable. As the social relations model provides a straightforward conceptual model of the components that make up behaviors in dyads and groups, this book will provide a powerful conceptual and methodological toolbox to analyze behaviors in dyads and groups across the sciences. This book is specifically designed to make this toolbox accessible - beyond interpersonal perception phenomena. It helps identify the relevant phenomena and dynamics surrounding behaviors in dyads and groups, and goes on to assess and analyze them empirically. - Captures essential conceptual and methodological topics around the scientific analyses of behaviors in groups and dyads - Situates the SRM in the history of dyadic research - Offers detailed guidance on research design and measurement operations - Organizes models and empirical results into easily read figures and tables - Demonstrates how SRM variances and covariances can be used as dependent measures in experiments - Conceptualizes novel phenomena in personality psychology using the SRM

Book Lay Theories and Their Role in the Perception of Social Groups

Download or read book Lay Theories and Their Role in the Perception of Social Groups written by Ying-yi Hong and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003-07-30 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue addresses the nature, development, and consequences of a variety of lay theories for group perception and behavior. The articles illuminate the structural, functional, and dynamic properties of lay theories, as well as their scope. Addressing the development of the theories from diverse theoretical perspectives-evolutionary, cognitive, developmental, and sociocultural learning-each paper documents the consequences of different lay theories for understanding group inferences and judgements. Collectively the articles propose theoretical extensions and suggest practical implications of the lay theories approach for reducing prejudice.
