Book The Internet Left

Download or read book The Internet Left written by Graham Harrison and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defying the current pessimistic narrative, this book challenges the prevailing assumptions that the political Left is spent, hopeful ideological discourse has collapsed and social media has corroded public debates about politics. Instead, the book argues that ideological activism remains vibrant on the Left, but there is currently no clear way of recognising and analysing this phenomenon. The book fills this gap by first defining what political social media is and then by taking a morphological approach to investigating political ideologies and revealing the ways in which interconnected concepts are arranged. It concludes by coining the term 'proto-ideologies' to approach the construction of concepts that generate ideologies in the making.

Book Internet Use and Psychological Well Being Among Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Internet Use and Psychological Well Being Among Children and Adolescents written by Yangu Pan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internet use (e.g., smartphone use, social media use) is ubiquitous in our daily lives and plays an increasingly important role in human well-being. Today’s adolescents and their parents spend significant amounts of time on technological devices, such as smartphones, especially during COVID-19. In this year, new research shows that nearly half of American teenagers say they use the Internet “almost constantly”, 95% of American teens have smartphones, and about 54% of teens said it would be “somewhat hard” to give up social media. Hence, further research on the relationship between Internet use and psychological well-being among children and adolescents is worth pursuing. At the same time, a new interest in this area of research is “parental technoference” which was defined as regular interruptions to real-time face-to-face communications, interactions, or time spent together among family members because of parental use of technology. Technoference has become a common phenomenon in many families with children, and evidence has been identified that extended parental time on technological devices (e.g., smartphones) could have negative effects on parent-child relationships and children’s wellbeing. For example, parental phubbing is regarded as a typical parental technoference, and this term is used widely in some countries around the world, which has been demonstrated to be detrimental to their children’s developmental outcomes and cause various psychological health problems.

Book Heterogenous Computational Intelligence in Internet of Things

Download or read book Heterogenous Computational Intelligence in Internet of Things written by Pawan Singh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have seen a sharp increase in the development of data transfer techniques in the networking industry over the past few years. We can see that the photos are assisting clinicians in detecting infection in patients even in the current COVID-19 pandemic condition. With the aid of ML/AI, medical imaging, such as lung X-rays for COVID-19 infection, is crucial in the early detection of many diseases. We also learned that in the COVID-19 scenario, both wired and wireless networking are improved for data transfer but have network congestion. An intriguing concept that has the ability to reduce spectrum congestion and continuously offer new network services is providing wireless network virtualization. The degree of virtualization and resource sharing varies between the paradigms. Each paradigm has both technical and non-technical issues that need to be handled before wireless virtualization becomes a common technology. For wireless network virtualization to be successful, these issues need careful design and evaluation. Future wireless network architecture must adhere to a number of Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Virtualization has been extended to wireless networks as well as conventional ones. By enabling multi-tenancy and tailored services with a wider range of carrier frequencies, it improves efficiency and utilization. In the IoT environment, wireless users are heterogeneous, and the network state is dynamic, making network control problems extremely difficult to solve as dimensionality and computational complexity keep rising quickly. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has been developed by the use of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) as a potential approach to solve high-dimensional and continuous control issues effectively. Deep Reinforcement Learning techniques provide great potential in IoT, edge and SDN scenarios and are used in heterogeneous networks for IoT-based management on the QoS required by each Software Defined Network (SDN) service. While DRL has shown great potential to solve emerging problems in complex wireless network virtualization, there are still domain-specific challenges that require further study, including the design of adequate DNN architectures with 5G network optimization issues, resource discovery and allocation, developing intelligent mechanisms that allow the automated and dynamic management of the virtual communications established in the SDNs which is considered as research perspective.

Book Misunderstanding the Internet

Download or read book Misunderstanding the Internet written by James Curran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of the internet has been spectacular. There are now more than 3 billion internet users across the globe, some 40 per cent of the world’s population. The internet’s meteoric rise is a phenomenon of enormous significance for the economic, political and social life of contemporary societies. However, much popular and academic writing about the internet continues to take a celebratory view, assuming that the internet’s potential will be realised in essentially positive and transformative ways. This was especially true in the euphoric moment of the mid-1990s, when many commentators wrote about the internet with awe and wonderment. While this moment may be over, its underlying technocentrism – the belief that technology determines outcomes – lingers on and, with it, a failure to understand the internet in its social, economic and political contexts. Misunderstanding the Internet is a short introduction, encompassing the history, sociology, politics and economics of the internet and its impact on society. This expanded and updated second edition is a polemical, sociologically and historically informed guide to the key claims that have been made about the online world. It aims to challenge both popular myths and existing academic orthodoxies that surround the internet.
