Die historische Betrachtung zeigt, dass bestimmte Eigenschaften oft als Differenzen wahrgenommen und somit etwas konstruiert wurde, welches auf ein Negativphänomen verweist. Bestimmten körperlichen Merkmalen wurden historisch betrachtet bestimmte Bedeutungen zugemessen. Fehlende oder besonders ausgeprägte Körperteile bewertete und hierarchisierte man. Der kulturelle, historische und gesellschaftliche Kontext bildet durch bestimmte Darstellungen, die heutzutage hauptsächlich medial produziert werden, ein Prinzip von Normalität. Er bestimmt, welche Körper schön sind und welche Eigenschaften ein Körper haben muss, damit er als normal gilt. Dabei sind bestimmte Eigenschaften wichtiger als andere. Die Hierarchisierung bezieht sich dabei immer auf variable und veränderbare Ordnungsvorstellungen über 'Außerordentliche Körper'. Einer bestimmten ambivalenten Resonanz mussten und müssen sich Menschen mit Beeinträchtigung entgegen sehen. Doch Besonderheit ist nicht gleich Besonderheit. Merkmale müssen nicht allgemein als negativ bewertet werden. Ob und inwiefern sie als Behinderung gelten lässt sich an kulturell und historisch variablen Deutungsmustern ablesen. Die auf der abstrakten Ebene vorhandenen fraglichen Vorstellungen über die Ordnung der Dinge, spiegeln sich in bestimmten Resonanzen von Entitäten wieder. Auf der Handlungsebene in bestimmten Reaktionen und Umgangsformen werden unsere emotionalen und gedanklichen Resonanzen gegenüber M.m.B deutlich. Obwohl Deutungsmuster veränderbar, vielfältig und nicht zeitlich stabil sind, zeigt sich durch eine historische Betrachtung, dass sich gewisse Denkansätze und Resonanzen solide gehalten haben.

In the media coverage of recent years, the Finnish school system has often been brought into play as a prime example of important educational policy challenges. This is particularly true of the issue of inclusive education. While few studies to date have seriously questioned the Finnish "educational miracle", this book aims to provide an objective account of the current situation in Finland. In doing so, it takes a differentiated and critical look at inclusive schooling in Finland. In order to achieve this, the inclusive school and classroom culture is examined using qualitative research approaches in selected Finnish schools. The building blocks of an inclusive school developed by Reich (2014) are consulted as criteria for analysis. Based on the findings of this study, it is finally examined and discussed what Germany (and other countries) can learn from Finland with regard to the topic of inclusion.

This book presents insights into the lived realities of children with disabilities in primary schools in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It examines specific cultural and societal characteristics of Ethiopia that influence the education of children with disabilities. The book presents findings drawn from interviews with, and participant observation of the schoolchildren, family members, teachers and other “experts”, and places these findings in a cultural-historical context. The multidimensional approach taken allows for, on the one hand, the provision of a historical grounding of the book, explaining the main historical junctures and their implications for education, and the discussion of the role of culture and society as barriers and facilitators of education. On the other hand, it gives the book a more personal angle, allowing the reader to gain insight into what it means to feel like a family, develop a sense of belonging, and tr ying to move toward educational equity.

According to empirical evidence, one of the most important success factors in implementing inclusive schooling are the attitudes of the actors involved. Previous studies have shown that positive attitudes towards inclusive schooling are not only a condition for success regarding the implementation, but also an important outcome variable of inclusive education. The present study provides empirical insights into the attitudes towards students with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. A study called ATIS-STEP (Attitudes Towards Inclusive Schooling - Students', TEachers' and Parents' Attitudes) was conducted in the school year 2016/17 in 48 inclusive classrooms in Austria. It is the first study to provide longitudinal data that examines the attitudes of the three different stakeholder groups: students, teachers and parents. Furthermore, the interdependency of the attitudes of the three groups, as well as the influence of previous contact experience on the attitudes are analyzed and discussed. In this text we take the following themes: The first theme is the definition of distance education. Before we started writing the first edition of Teaching and Learning at a Distance we carefully reviewed the literature to determine the definition that would be at the foundation of our writing. This definition is based on the work of Desmond Keegan, but is unique to this book and has been adopted by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology and by the Encyclopedia Britannica. The second theme of the book is the importance of research to the development of effective courses and programs offered at a distance. The best practices presented in Teaching and Learning at a Distance are validated by scientific evidence. Certainly there are “rules of thumb,” but we have always attempted to only include recommendations that can be supported by research. The third theme of Teaching and Learning at a Distance is derived from Richard Clark’s famous quote published in the Review of Educational Research asserting that media are mere vehicles that do not directly influence achievement. Clark’s controversial work is discussed in the book, but is also fundamental to the book’s advocacy for distance education—in other words, we authors do not make the claim that education delivered at a distance is inherently better than other ways people learn. Distance delivered instruction is not a magical approach that makes learners achieve more. Equivalency theory is the fourth theme of the book. Here we present the concept that instruction should be provided to learners that is equivalent rather than identical to what might be delivered in a traditional environment. Equivalency theory helps the instructional designer approach the development of instruction for each learner without attempting to duplicate what happens in a face-to-face classroom. The final theme for Teaching and Learning at a Distance is the idea that the book should be comprehensive—that it should cover as much of the various ways instruction is made available to distant learners as is possible. It can serve as a stand-alone source of information.
