Download or read book Rhythms in Physiological Systems written by Hermann Haken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhythms are a basic phenomenon in all physiological systems. They cover an enormous range of frequencies with periods from the order of milliseconds up to some years. They are described by many disciplines and are investigated usually in the context of the physiology of the respective function or organ. The importance given to the research on rhythmicity is quite different in different systems. In some cases where the functional significance is obvious rhythms are at the center of interest, as in the case of respiration or locomotion. In other fields they are considered more or less as interesting epiphenomena or at best as indicators without essential functional significance, as in the case of cardiovascular or EEG rhythms. Recently the study of physiological rhythms has attracted growing interest in several fields, especially with respect to rhythm research in humans and its rapidly spreading applications in basic behavioral research, and as a diagnostic tool in clinical medicine. This development was favored by two methodological and conceptual ad vances: on the one hand, the availability of non-invasive methods of continu ous recording of physiological parameters and their computer-assisted evaluation, and on the other, the rapid development of theoretical analyses, for example, the understanding of dynamic systems, the generation of coordinated macroscopic pro cesses in systems comprising many single elements, and the mathematical tools for treating nonlinear oscillators and their mutual coupling.

Download or read book Dramatic Effect of Cross Correlations in Random Vibrations of Discrete Systems Beams Plates and Shells written by Isaac Elishakoff and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explains the dramatic effect of cross-correlations in forming the structural response of aircraft in turbulent excitation, ships in rough seas, cars on irregular roads, and other dynamic regimes. It brings into sharp focus the dramatic effect of cross correlations often neglected due to the analytical difficulty of their evaluation. Veteran author Professor Isaac Elishakoff illustrates how neglect of cross correlations could result in underestimation of the response by tens or hundreds of percentages the effect of the random vibrations of structures’ main elements, including beams, plates, and shells.
Download or read book Recent Advances in Differential Equations written by Roberto Conti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Differential Equations contains the proceedings of a meeting held at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, on August 24-28, 1978 under the auspices of the U.S. Army Research Office. The papers review the status of research in the field of differential equations (ordinary, partial, and functional). Both theoretical aspects (differential operators, periodic solutions, stability and bifurcation, asymptotic behavior of solutions, etc.) and problems arising from applications (reaction-diffusion equations, control problems, heat flow, etc.) are discussed. Comprised of 33 chapters, this book first examines non-cooperative trajectories of n-person dynamical games and stable non-cooperative equilibria, followed by a discussion on the determination and application of Vekua resolvents. The reader is then introduced to generalized Hopf bifurcation; some Cauchy problems arising in computational methods; and boundary value problems for pairs of ordinary differential operators. Subsequent chapters focus on degenerate evolution equations and singular optimal control; stability of neutral functional differential equations; local exact controllability of nonlinear evolution equations; and turbulence and higher order bifurcations. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the field of mathematics.

Download or read book Kinetic Data Analysis written by Laszlo Endrenyi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetic models have often served as useful examples in develop ing the methodology for the design and analysis of experiments in volving mechanistic models. Thus, it is not surprising that these approaches have been applied quite successfully to kinetic obser vations. Nevertheless, many ideas and methods were developed indepen dently in various fields of science. More often than not, investi gators working in one area have not been aware of relevant advances in others. In order to facilitate the desirable exchange of ideas, a one-day symposium was held in Toronto in conjunction with the XIth International Congress of Biochemistry. Biochemists, pharmacolo gists,> and statisticians came together and discussed many of the topics presented in this volume. Participants in the symposium believed that it would be use ful to publish a collection of the presentations together with some additional material. The present volume is the result. It is an attempt to convey some of the interdisciplinary concerns involv ing mechanistic, and especially kinetic, model building. The coverage is by no means exhaustive: many principles, methods, and problems are not included. Even the applications are limited to biochemistry and pharmacology. Still, the symposium highlighted areas of current interest. These included questions of weighting, robust parameter estimation, pooled data analysis, model identification, and the design of experiments. These topics, which are of interest in many fields of science, are discus3ed also in the present volume.

Download or read book Mathematical Models in Molecular Cellular Biology written by Lee A. Segel and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1980 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in theoretical biology is rapidly growing and this 1981 book attempts to make the theory more accessible to experimentalists. Its primary purpose is to demonstrate to experimental molecular and cellular biologists the possible usefulness of mathematical models. Biologists with a basic command of calculus should be able to learn from the book what assumptions are implied by various types of equations, to understand in broad outline a number of major theoretical concepts, and to be aware of some of the difficulties connected with analytical and numerical solutions of mathematical problems. Thus they should be able to appreciate the significance of theoretical papers in their fields and to communicate usefully with theoreticians in the course of their work.
