Book Research on Physics Education

Download or read book Research on Physics Education written by E.F. Redish and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2004-08-09 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics Education research is a young field with a strong tradition in many countries. However, it has only recently received full recognition of its specificity and relevance for the growth and improvement of the culture of Physics in contemporary Society for different levels and populations. This may be due on one side to the fact that teaching, therefore education, is part of the job of university researchers and it has often been implicitly assumed that the competences required for good research activity also guarantee good teaching practice. On the other side, and perhaps more important, is the fact that the problems to be afforded in doing research in education are complex problems that require a knowledge base not restricted to the disciplinary physics knowledge but enlarged to include cognitive science, communication science, history and philosophy. The topics discussed here look at some of the facets of the problem by considering the interplay of the development of cognitive models for learning Physics with some reflections on the Physics contents for contemporary and future society with the analysis of teaching strategies and the role of experiments the issue of assessment and cultural aspects. Information is also given on the organizations involved in connecting various aspects of Physics Education: the International Commission on Physics Education, the European Physical Society and the European Physics Education Network.

Book Understanding The Physics Of Toys Principles Theory And Exercises

Download or read book Understanding The Physics Of Toys Principles Theory And Exercises written by S Rajasekar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstrating many fundamental concepts of physics and engineering through the working principles of popular science toys is inexpensive, quickly reaching the senses and inspiring a better learning. The systematic way of setting theoretical model equations for the toys provides a remarkable experience in constructing model equations for physical and engineering systems.Given that most science toys are based on the principles of physics, and to cater to the needs of graduate and master-level programme students in physics and engineering, the present book covers more than 40 wide ranging popular toys. For each toy various features are presented including history, construction, working principle, theoretical model, a solved problem and 5-10 exercises.A course on The Physics of Toys can be designed based on the proposed book to be taught as a full course at graduate and master-level and even to students who have never been exposed to physics. Further, the features of the toys covered in this book can be used to illustrate various concepts and principles in different branches of physics and engineering.

Book Makerspaces Innovation and Science Education

Download or read book Makerspaces Innovation and Science Education written by Michael Tan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-27 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview to a range of theories in science and technology that inform the different ways in which makerspaces can be educative. Makerspaces are an indispensable site for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) instruction and pose novel risks and opportunities for STEM instruction. Educators are likely to reach towards activities that have a high degree of engagement, but this might result in observations like 'it looks like fun, but what are they learning?'. Beginning from the question of how we know what we know in science, the author asserts that understanding scientific knowledge requires us to know more than the abstract concepts typically presented in schools. The social and material aspects of knowledge are also important—these take the form of questions such as: What is the interplay between knowledge and power? How do we understand that we can have a ‘feel’ for materials and artefacts that we cannot completely describe in words? How do we know what ideas ought to be made real though technology and engineering? Significantly, this book also discusses the ethical dimensions of STEM education, in thinking about the kinds of STEM education that could be useful for open futures. This book will be useful to graduate students and educators seeking an expansive view of STEM education. More generally, these ideas outline a possible new strategy for a vision of school that is not merely training or preparing students for work. Education needs to also prepare students for sociopolitical participation, and with STEM being central to our contemporary lives, this book provides insights for how this can happen in makerspaces.

Book Physics Project Lab

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Gluck
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 0198704577
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Physics Project Lab written by Paul Gluck and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of many years of experience of the authors in guiding physics projects. It aims to satisfy a deeply felt need to involve students and their instructors in extended experimental investigations of physical phenomena. Over fifty extended projects are described in detail, at various levels of sophistication, aimed at both the advanced high school, as well as first and second year undergraduate physics students, and their instructors. Carrying out these projects may take anything from a few days to several weeks, and in some cases months. Each project description starts with a summary of theoretical background, proceeds to outline goals and possible avenues of exploration, suggests needed instrumentation, experimental setup and data analysis, and presents typical results which can serve as guidelines for the beginner researcher. Separate parts are devoted to mechanics, electromagnetism, acoustics, optics, liquids, and thermal physics. An additional appendix suggests twenty further ideas for projects, giving a very brief description for each and providing references for pursuing them in detail. We also suggest a useful library of basic texts for each of the topics treated in the various parts.

Book Learning from Singapore

Download or read book Learning from Singapore written by Pak Tee Ng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning from Singapore tells the inside story of the country’s journey in transforming its education system from a struggling one to one that is hailed internationally as effective and successful. It is a story not of the glory of international test results, but of the hard work and tenacity of a few generations of policy makers, practitioners and teacher trainers. Despite its success, Singapore continues to reform its education system, and is willing to deal with difficult issues and challenges of change. Citing Singapore's transformation, author Pak Tee Ng highlights how context and culture affect education policy formulation and implementation. Showing how difficult education reform can be when a system needs to negotiate between competing philosophies, significant trade-offs, or paradoxical positions, this book explores the successes and struggles of the Singapore system and examines its future direction and areas of tension. The book also explores how national education systems can be strengthened by embracing the creative tensions generated by paradoxes such as the co-existence of timely change and timeless constants, centralisation and decentralisation, meritocracy and compassion, and teaching less and learning more. Learning from Singapore brings to the world the learning from Singapore—what Singapore has learned from half a century of educational change—and encourages every education system to bring hope to and secure a future for the next generation.
