Book The History and Theory of Children s Citizenship in Contemporary Societies

Download or read book The History and Theory of Children s Citizenship in Contemporary Societies written by Brian Milne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the notion of children having full citizenship. It does so historically, through intellectual discourse, beliefs, and moral and ideological positions on children. It looks at the status and extent of knowledge of the position of children covering about 2500 years. The book takes European and other cultures, traditions and beliefs into consideration. It reflects on the topic from a variety of disciplines, including social sciences, theology and philosophy. The book places children’s citizenship in the centre of children’s rights discourse. Part of the work is a critical appraisal of ‘children’s participation’ because it diverts attention away from children as members of society toward being a separable group. The book moves on from child participation using a children’s rights based argument toward examination of the relationship of the child with the state, i.e. as potentially full member citizens.

Book International Child Law

Download or read book International Child Law written by Rajnaara Akhtar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the rights of the child using the global framework of the United Nations International Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989. Analysing both public and private international legal aspects, this cross-disciplinary text promotes a holistic understanding of the ongoing development of child law, children’s rights and the protection of the child. In-depth analyses of the following topic areas are included: Childhood in the digital age; Child labour; International parental child abduction; Inter-country adoption; Sexual exploitation; Children and armed conflict; and Indigenous children. These topics are contextualised with further chapters on the concept of childhood and children’s rights, the international legal framework in which the Convention operates and a substantive chapter on the Convention itself. This fourth edition has been updated and revised, including a new chapter dealing with issues arising from childhood in the age of unprecedented digital technological advancements; a crucial issue for childhood experiences in modern times. This edition also includes new case studies, recent legal developments in the field of international child law, and inclusion of broader scholarship to capture diverse views on international law and child law. The aim of this book is to provide the reader with an accessible, informed, critical and scholarly account of the international law framework relating to children. Drawing on a range of legal and other disciplines, this book remains a valuable resource for those in the course of study and research in this area.

Book The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child An Analysis of Treaty Provisions and Implications of U S Ratification

Download or read book The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child An Analysis of Treaty Provisions and Implications of U S Ratification written by Jonathan Todres and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth text goes beyond the rhetoric of the debate on children’s rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in particular, to provide a detailed examination of the impact that U.S. ratification of the Convention would have on U.S. law. The chapters have been written by leading children’s advocates and scholars with a general audience in mind, as the authors believe that it is important for all Americans to become informed about the Convention and about children’s rights in general. With a greater understanding of the substance of the Convention and children’s rights, readers will be better positioned to determine what the real issues are, what is simply rhetoric without any basis in fact or law, and how they can address the real issues in an effective manner in order to provide a better world for all children.

Book In the Child s Best Interest

Download or read book In the Child s Best Interest written by Kay Castelle and published by Amer Youth Work Center. This book was released on 1989 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to explain the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which sets standards for the protection and care of children. No country protects the rights of all its children or provides them with an adequate standard of health care, education, day care, housing and nutrition, or properly protects them from abuse, neglect and exploitation. Further political commitment to the protection of children, in the form of a legal code, is needed. In 1988, the U.N. Commission on Human Rights, aided by the intergovernmental bodies and many international voluntary organizations, drafted the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the second draft has now been completed. Human rights are the fundamental freedoms and protections to which all human beings are entitled. The general rule is that children are afforded the same basic rights as adults, but, because they are especially vulnerable, they require special rights to protect them and to meet their unique needs. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child consolidates existing international law on children and establishes new standards. The Convention defines the rights and needs of children in terms of social, economic and cultural rights, as well as their civil and political rights. These are categorized under: (1) the right to survival; (2) the right to protection; and (3) the right to develop. It is vital that governments and the public be made aware of the Convention and its provisions. A summary of the draft articles and the complete text of the Convention are included in Appendixes I and II. The text is illustrated with children's drawings. (AS)

Book Young Children in the World and Their Rights

Download or read book Young Children in the World and Their Rights written by Adrijana Višnjić-Jevtić and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides different perspectives on the concept of children’s rights, including policy, educational, and children’s perspectives. It examines how the crucial ideas of the Convention on the Rights of the Child are respected and implemented in 14 countries in five regions of the world. It looks at early childhood education, children’s participatory rights, and at how these rights are promoted and guaranteed in different countries. It explores the professional practice of education and its complexities, challenges and dilemmas, as well as the role of play, and of listening and participation. The book advocates children’s rights today, arguing for its vital importance, in the best interests of the children. In doing so, it furthers the understanding of children’s rights and spreads knowledge about the Convention, as a means of celebrating its 30th anniversary. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) comprises the potential to change the lives of children to the very best. It may exalt children from the position of marginalized citizens to the centre of policies all over the world. Even though the concept of children’s rights is omnipresent, the respect for children’s rights must be discussed. While the Convention brings the new perspective of children as citizens to the world, there are still challenges in its application. The book interrogates challenges in understanding and applying children rights and offers possible answers to these challenges. The ratification process itself, does not guarantee that children’s rights are respected. While all adults should take responsibility for implementing the UNCRC in everyday life, Early Childhood Education should give opportunities for children to learn and live their rights.
