Book Resource Management Urbanization and Governance in Hong Kong and the Zhujiang Delta

Download or read book Resource Management Urbanization and Governance in Hong Kong and the Zhujiang Delta written by Kwan Yiu Wong and published by Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zhujiang Delta region is the natural hinterland of Hong Kong. It has experienced astonishing growth since 1978 after the introduction of economic reforms and the open policy in China. Its subsequent development is, in many ways, closely related with that of Hong Kong. In fact, far-reaching economic integration has taken place between Hong Kong and the Zhujiang Delta. After China's entry to the WTO on December 11, 2001, such economic integration will be further strengthened. A world-class city-region is being formed around the Hong Kong and Zhujiang Delta area. Pressing issues and concerns of effective resource management, governance and sustainability are emerging due to accelerated industrialization, urbanization, globalization and regional integration. They will affect the future development and prosperity of the region. The book is a collective effort by leading scholars from Hong Kong, Mainland China, USA and Germany and offers updated and in-depth analyses of economic integration, migration, urbanization, regional development, resource management and urban/regional governance in the Hong Kong-Zhujiang Delta region in the context of development and transformation of Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Book The Global Rise of China

Download or read book The Global Rise of China written by Alvin Y. So and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to unravel and explain the puzzle of the global rise of China: how, in just forty years, China has been quickly transformed from a poor, backward third-world country to one of the world’s core economic powerhouses. Exactly how did this Chinese developmental miracle happen? Focusing on the key historical turning point in China’s post-socialist development, the book examines the complex processes through which China interacted with the global neoliberal project of the late twentieth century. Alvin Y. So and Yin-Wah Chu reveal the centrality of the communist party-state in propelling China onto the world scene, and how it has successfully responded to the developmental challenges of technological upgrading, environmental degradation, inter-state rivalry, and maintaining its power. This book provides a comprehensive and insightful study of the rise of China not solely from an economic, social, and political perspective, but also from a global and historical perspective. It will be an invaluable guide for students and non-specialists interested in post-socialist development and the global rise of China in the twenty-first century.

Book Health Education in Context An International Perspective on Health Education in Schools and Local Communities

Download or read book Health Education in Context An International Perspective on Health Education in Schools and Local Communities written by Neil Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an international perspective on health education and specifically the influence that context has on this aspect of education. The focus includes both formal and non-formal health education and the factors that impact upon its effectiveness, particularly in non-Western and non-English-speaking contexts (i.e., outside the UK, USA, Australia, NZ, etc.). An important feature of the book is that it draws upon the experiences and research of local experts, representing the perspectives of an extremely diverse cohort across the world (22 countries and 2 regions in total). The book addresses topics such as: the development and implementation of health education in different countries; the influence of political, cultural, societal or religious mores; governmental or ministerial drives; economic or other pressures driving curriculum reform; and the influence of external assessment regimes on health education. By embedding discussions of health education in local contexts and representing a diversity of perspectives on this important topic this book highlights both barriers and enablers to improving health education across the globe.

Book The City after Chinese New Towns

Download or read book The City after Chinese New Towns written by Michele Bonino and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2020, some 400 Chinese New Towns will have been built, representing an unprecedented urban growth. While some of these massive developments are still empty today, others have been rather successful. The substantial effort on the part of the Chinese government is to absorb up to 250 million people, chiefly migrants from the rural parts of the country. Unlike in Europe and North America, where new towns grew in accordance to the local industries, these new Chinese cities are mostly built to the point of near completion before introducing people. The interdisciplinary publication, written by architects, planners and geographers, explores the new urbanistic phenomenon of the "Chinese New Town". Especially commissioned photographs and maps illustrate many examples of these new settlements.

Book Restructuring the Chinese City

Download or read book Restructuring the Chinese City written by Laurence J.C. Ma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sea of change has occurred in China since the 1978 economic reforms. Bringing together the work of leading scholars specializing in urban China, this book examines what has happened to the Chinese city undergoing multiple transformations during the reform era, with an emphasis on new processes of urban formation and the consequent reconstituted urban spaces. With arguments against the convergence thesis that sees cities everywhere becoming more Western in form and suggestions that the Chinese city is best seen as a multiplex city, Restructuring the Chinese City is an indispensable text for Chinese specialists, urban scholars and advanced students in urban geography, urban planning and China studies.

Book A Policy Review of Cross Boundary Water Resources Management Between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta

Download or read book A Policy Review of Cross Boundary Water Resources Management Between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of Dissertation titled A Policy Review of Cross Boundary Water Resources Management between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta submitted by Chung Yuen Ting, Vanessa for the Degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in June 2003 Water is a highly flexible natural resource without any boundary constraints upon its utilization and contamination. When water bodies are commonly shared among different growing regions with separate units politically and administratively, conflicts would inevitably arise and it is necessary to call for cross boundary management among them. Hong Kong, after the return of sovereignty to mainland China, has been increasingly linked with the Pearl River Delta region in terms of social and economic development. Despite this increased connection, however, concerns on cross border environmental problems have never been addressed until the impact has become visible to the public. Dongjiang is one of the tributaries of the Pearl River which drains nearly 90% of the total area of Guangdong Province. With rapid industrial and urban growth, its water quality has remarkably deteriorated and this has made it very difficult to maintain it as the safest source of potable water for the population of Pearl River Delta and Hong Kong. In addition, the water use conflicts have become more prominent as the sectoral demand on Dongjiang becomes more diversified. Collaboration is the fundamental ground for both governments to implement cross border management; however, the existing institutional and legal frameworks have undermined the potential development. Detailed discussion will be given on examining what and how the current institutions and statutory regulations have been implemented to resolve the water use conflicts. The challenges and opportunities for the practicability of watershed management and cross boundary management as long term strategies in Dongjiang basin will be discussed too. It is foreseeable that a se.
