Download or read book Students of the World written by Pedro Monaville and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 30, 1960—the day of the Congo’s independence—Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba gave a fiery speech in which he conjured a definitive shift away from a past of colonial oppression toward a future of sovereignty, dignity, and justice. His assassination a few months later showed how much neocolonial forces and the Cold War jeopardized African movements for liberation. In Students of the World, Pedro Monaville traces a generation of Congolese student activists who refused to accept the foreclosure of the future Lumumba envisioned. These students sought to decolonize university campuses, but the projects of emancipation they articulated went well beyond transforming higher education. Monaville explores the modes of being and thinking that shaped their politics. He outlines a trajectory of radicalization in which gender constructions, cosmopolitan dispositions, and the influence of a dissident popular culture mattered as much as access to various networks of activism and revolutionary thinking. By illuminating the many worlds inhabited by Congolese students at the time of decolonization, Monaville charts new ways of writing histories of the global 1960s from Africa.

Book excerpt: The founding of the U.S. National Student Association (NSA) in September of 1947 was shaped by the immediate concerns and worldview of the "GI Bill Generation" of American Students, returning from a world at war to build a world at peace. The more than 90 living authors of this book, all of whom are of that generation, tell about NSA's formation and first five years. The book also provides a prologue reaching back into the 1930s and an epilogue going forward to the sixties and beyond.

Download or read book The University Socialist Club and the Contest for Malaya written by Edgar Liao and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book, using a small group of left-wing student activists as a prism, explores the complex politics that underpinned the making of nation-states in Singapore and Malaysia after World War Two. While most works have viewed the period in terms of political contestation groups, the book demonstrates how it is better understood as involving a shared modernist project framed by British-planned decolonization. This pursuit of nationalist modernity was characterized by an optimism to replace the colonial system with a new state and mobilize the people into a new relationship with the state, according them new responsibilities as well as new rights. This book, based on student writings, official documents and oral history interviews, brings to life various modernist strands - liberal-democratic, ethnic-communal, and Fabian and Marxist socialist - seeking to determine the form of post-colonial Malaya. It uncovers a hitherto little-seen world where the meanings of loud slogans were fluid, vague and deeply contested. This world also comprised as much convergence between the groups as conflict, including collaboration between the Socialist Club and other political and student groups which were once its rivals, while its main ally eventually became its nemesis"--Publisher's description.

This book was released on 1995-02-09 with total page 1174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique, pioneering study traces the origin, growth and basic features of the international law of youth rights. It consists of both source documents and commentary on the historical trends to elaborate and codify international instruments and standards in this field (especially by the League of Nations system: 1919--1940, and the United Nations system: 1946--1994), as well as action taken by governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations to promote and protect youth rights. It concludes with a call for a new international instrument and monitoring machinery to better promote and protect the rights of youth on a global basis. For ease of reference, the book contains a comprehensive bibliography and indexes of instruments, ratifications, correspondents, subjects and countries.
