Book International Trade and Resource Allocation

Download or read book International Trade and Resource Allocation written by A. D. Woodland and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1982 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this work is to present the modern theory of international trade within a unified framework, placing the traditional two-dimensional model and its simple generalizations in proper perspective. This general and unified analysis is based upon microeconomic principles and the use of modern duality theory. Topics are thereby examined in terms of cost, expenditure, indirect utility and gross national production, rather than production, direct utility and transformation functions. When using such factors, concise models can be formulated, highlighting the assumed economic behavior and allowing easy derivation of results. Although the book emphasizes the theoretical aspects of international trade, it also links this theory to some current empirical research. Each chapter has a selection of problems for solution, which include proofs of assertions within the text, special cases, and extensions of the analysis.

Book A Theory of International Trade Under Uncertainty

Download or read book A Theory of International Trade Under Uncertainty written by Elhanan Helpman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Theory of International Trade Under Uncertainty analyzes international trade in goods and securities in the presence of uncertainty using an integrated general equilibrium framework that recognizes the dependence of markets for goods on financial markets and vice versa. The usefulness of this approach is demonstrated by means of applications to questions such as the effects of international trade on resource allocation, tariff policy, and intervention in financial capital markets. Results which are important for theoretical as well as policy oriented applications are presented. Comprised of 11 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to some of the fundamental elements of the deterministic Ricardian and Heckscher-Ohlin theories of international trade. Relevant elements from the theory of decision making under uncertainty are then discussed, along with the behavior of firms and consumers-investors in an economy with stock markets. Subsequent chapters focus on problems of commercial policy; gains from trade in goods and securities; and issues of intervention in financial capital markets. The book concludes by describing a dynamic model of international trade that contains an infinite horizon and takes into account the trade-off between present period consumption and savings. An example that illustrates an equilibrium structure of the dynamic model is presented. This monograph is intended for economists who are interested in international trade or international finance, including graduate students who specialize in these fields.

Book Colonial Trade and International Exchange

Download or read book Colonial Trade and International Exchange written by Richard Anthony Johns and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International trade theory implicitly assumes that countries participating in external trade each have sovereign status. Its failure to recognise the pervasive importance of colonial trade as an intermediate stage of external trade development, interposed between autarky and 'international trade' narrowly defined creates a serious gap In its explanatory structure and direct applicability. Anthony John's book is an attempt to examine the properties of colonial resource management on the process of territorial specialisation. He considers the implications of such foreign involvement for the trade patterns which may ensue after political independence when formal 'international' trade entry is effected.

Book Trade Productivity and mis allocation

Download or read book Trade Productivity and mis allocation written by Antoine Berthou and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the gains from globalization in the presence of firm heterogeneity and potential resource misallocation. We show theoretically that without distortions, bilateral and export liberalizations increase aggregate welfare and productivity, while import liberalization has ambiguous effects. Resource misallocation can either amplify, dampen or reverse the gains from trade. Using model-consistent measures and unique new data on 14 European countries and 20 industries in 1998-2011, we empirically establish that exogenous shocks to export demand and import competition both generate large aggregate productivity gains. Guided by theory, we provide evidence consistent with these effects operating through reallocations across firms in the presence of distortions: (i) Both export and import expansion increase average firm productivity, but the former also shifts activity towards more productive firms, while the latter acts in reverse. (ii) Both export and import exposure raise the productivity threshold for survival, but this cut-off is not a sufficient statistic for aggregate productivity. (iii) Efficient institutions, factor and product markets amplify the gains from import competition but dampen those from export access.

Book Finance Comparative Advantage and Resource Allocation

Download or read book Finance Comparative Advantage and Resource Allocation written by Melise Jaud and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can financial institutions and markets enhance the discipline imposed by competitive product markets and thus improve resource allocation in the real economy? We address this question in the context of international trade, using disaggregated product-level data from 71 countries exporting to the USA. We show that exported products exit the US market sooner if they stand far away from the exporting country's comparative advantage. This pattern is stronger when the exporting country has a well-developed banking system, but it is unaffected by the depth of stock markets. These results are in accordance with theories stressing the disciplining role of debt and monitoring abilities of banks.

Book Bilateral Trade as a Development Instrument Under Global Trade Restrictions

Download or read book Bilateral Trade as a Development Instrument Under Global Trade Restrictions written by Karim A. Nashashibi and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their striving toward development, a number of less developed countries have espoused bilateral trade as yet another policy instrument allowing them to increase their acquisition of foreign resources. This has been particularly true of the trade of India, Pakistan, and Egypt, on which some useful empirical studies have been conducted. The target we are interested in is not trade efficiency as an end in itself, but growth. For a number of countries, the ability to grow depends very much on the ability to import. Hence, it is in terms of this target that we propose to evaluate the efficiency of bilateral trade as a policy instrument and to examine a number of related issues, such as the terms of trade, trade diversion, and its effect on resource allocation. A brief description of bilateral trade agreements starts our discussion followed by a three-country model as a theoretical formulation of the problem. Finally, several implications will be derived in relation to the issues mentioned above.
