Book excerpt: "Bill Orr has produced a handy compendium of statistics, with cogent explanations, on the world economy in the 1990s. National incomes, output, trade, asset markets, debt, foreign aid and population are presented by nation, region and level of development. As a tool, it belongs in the office, study, or newsroom next to the dictionary, and the atlas." —Charles P. Kindleberger, Professor of Economics, Emeritus Massachusetts Institute of Technology The Global Economy in the 90s provides a broad statistical guide for all of us in an era of increasing international interdependence: a much-needed contribution. —Alfred J. Malabre, Jr., author of Within Our Means "Talk about timely! Like a light in the dark swamp of geo- political-governmental charts, graphs, and tables. [Orr] is there standing over your shoulder, showing you how he interprets each and every graph, and before you know it, you've got your calculator out, and you start to see things that you never saw before. It's addictive. No boring textbook, this book is a masterfully navigated experience through a very confusing jungle. Orr has taken the statistics from dozens of sources and recast them into graphs that are so easy to read. Try it yourself, open the book anywhere. This is a real gem." Richard Barnaby, C.P.A., C.D.P.President, Business Support Services, Inc.Software for the Petroleum Trading Industry The Global Economy in the 1990s presents, in one comprehensive volume, essential facts and analyses of all aspects of an increasingly integrated global economy. Filled with hundreds of lively graphs that reveal trends and relationships, hundreds of tables that provide concrete numbers for individual research, and succinct short essays that put each facet of economic activity in its global context, this invaluable reference is derived and enhanced from over 20 official sources--including the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, GATT, United Nations, the U.S. Federal Reserve System, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, and the European Community.
Download or read book International Trade and Sustainable Development written by Bob Milward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary orthodox view of world trade has centred, generally unchallenged, on the ideas of free trade, based on the theoretical construct of comparative advantage. This book will engage in a critique of the orthodox position based on the underlying theoretical economic construct, the historical development of the now developed economies and the morally unsustainable position of the free-trade regime. The author examines alternatives such as Most Favoured Nation and Preferential Trading Agreements before making the argument in favour of Asymmetric Trading, where the underdeveloped economies can develop behind tariff barriers and quotas, whilst the triadic nations maintain a lack of barriers to the exports of these economies. He outlines how such a trading regime would be mutually beneficial in the long term, in the sense that development through industrialisation takes place and the increase in GDP per capita would allow markets for exports to be sustainable, thus widening the market for the goods and services of the developed economies. However, the author demonstrates that free trade actually increases the development gap by maintaining the status quo in terms of the underdeveloped economies specialising in and exporting low value-added primary products and importing high value-added manufactures. The book analyses contemporary and historical data to illustrate how an alternative trading regime can be truly advantageous to both the developed and underdeveloped regions of the world: a global trading regime that is capable of increasing GDP in a sustainable manner without transferring a surplus from the poor to the rich nations and without a long-term commitment on the part of the developed nations to altruism.

This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes that in developing countries, the moves toward more flexible exchange rate arrangements and liberalization of exchange controls often occurred in the context of comprehensive macroeconomic adjustment programs supported by the IMF. These programs featured a broad range of policy actions, including an increasing emphasis on structural reforms aimed at improving resource allocation and enhancing the supply response of the economy. With respect to restrictive systems, the trend toward liberalization of nontrade current and capital transactions continues, primarily because it is seen as ineffective, even counterproductive, to try to control such financial flows. This trend contrasts with trade where it appears that some major participants have been awaiting the outcome of the Uruguay Round before further reducing restrictions. A single currency peg has been the exchange arrangement most frequently used by developing countries, of which over one third currently have such an arrangement. This type of peg has the merit of being easy to administer and is generally chosen by countries that have a large share of foreign exchange transactions in the currency chosen as the peg.
