Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book explores the points of convergence between corporate capitalism and terrorist practice. Assessing the increase in the number of terrorist attacks directed against commercial entities in urban areas, such as the Westgate mall in Nairobi or the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris, Suzi Mirgani offers a fascinating and disturbing perspective on the spaces where supposedly oppositional ends of the spectrum meet on common ground. How is it that these urban commercial spaces provide ground zero for a meeting between the most powerful forces of contemporary culture, the most mainstream and the most extreme?

Book The New Dimension of International Terrorism

Download or read book The New Dimension of International Terrorism written by Stefan M. Aubrey and published by vdf Hochschulverlag AG. This book was released on 2004 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events of September 11, 2001 confronted the United States and the rest of the World with the reality of a new dimension of international terrorism. This new dimension did not start nor end with the attacks against the World Trade Center or the Pentagon, but began in the 1990s. This study examines the new dimension of international terrorism, contrasting it with the classical terrorism, the predominantly left-wing terrorist movements of the 1960s - 1980s in Europe, which were a subset of the bipolar geo-political arena. The author establishes the relationship of radical Islamist movements to the terrorist groups of the new dimension (principally focusing on Al-Qaeda) in providing the motivation for committing catastrophic terrorist acts, looks at the shadowy world of terrorist financing and makes suggestions regarding international counter-terrorist strategies.

Book excerpt: Is there a specifically 'European response' to international terrorism? Bringing together practitioners and academic experts this volume analyses the international context, threat perceptions and multi-dimensional nature of EU counter-terrorism measures. These cover legislative and operational measures, internal and international action and cut across all areas of EU responsibility and activity. A cooperative and coordinated system of national policies and anti-terrorism capabilities has been set up. However, the EU finds it easier to agree on objectives than on implementing them effectively. Of use and interest to students of European and international politics, to academics, journalists, civil servants and the general reader alike, the book critically evaluates the efforts of the European Union to protect European citizens against terrorism and to maintain a balance between the protection of its citizens and the protection of the rights and freedoms of the individual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed to strengthen the ability of organizations to anticipate, plan for, and respond to terrorist attacks, resulting in more resilient personnel and adaptive organizations. The book certainly succeeds in meeting those goals, providing a rich collection of individual works that responds to that ambitious goal. . . Each of the chapters is well-grounded in appropriate, contemporary literature and thoroughly examines principles, concepts, impacts and counter measures in its treatment of international terrorism and threats to security. . . This book would be well-placed as a graduate text in a number of courses. Any course dealing with terrorism and psycho-social impacts and related management responses would find it very useful. Emergency management or homeland security courses also might benefit from this book, particularly if they devote a considerable amount of time on the individual and organizational psychological impacts of terrorism and related attacks. Sharon L. Caudle, Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management A series of twelve informed and informative essays addressing various aspects of terrorism s impact and creating both individual as well as organizational resilience to terrorist assaults. . . . A work of meticulous and seminal scholarship throughout, International Terrorism and Threats to Security is a core addition to university library reference collections and especially recommended reading for governmental officials and non-specialist general readers concerned with responding to terrorist activities at home and abroad. Midwest Book Review The Social Issues Shelf This timely edited volume is part of a fast growing body of theory and research on terrorism aiming to satisfy a great thirst for knowledge on the topic both among professionals and lay people living in a world that has become a less safe place over the past few years. The fascinating data presented about changes that have occurred all over the world since 9/11, about the short and long impact of terrorism on organizations and individuals, about managing terrorism attacks, facilitating organizational recovery and developing individual and organizational resilience in preparation for such an attack, should be of interest to every intellectually curious reader. They are a must read for terrorism and crisis management researchers and practitioners, for organizational leaders and for human resource managers. Ayala Malach-Pines, Ben-Gurion University, Israel This original collection examines the managerial and organizational implications of international terrorism and threats to security. When Islamic terrorists flew hijacked airplanes into the World Trade Center on 9/11, it changed much of the world forever. The number of deaths and the financial losses resulting from the attack was unprecedented. 9/11 highlighted how risky life in organizations had become. The book reviews events since 9/11, which sets the foundation for the rest of the book. It scrutinizes the central role of governments as targets, agents and protectors of citizens, then considers the impact of terrorism on people and organizations based on research evidence from the US, Spain, and Israel. The authors examine how to increase individual coping resources, maintain work motivation in trying times and develop worksite emergency procedures. They also identify the key qualities of organizations that were able to recover quickly following devastating loss. International Terrorism and Threats to Security will be an invaluable resource for scholars of organizational behaviour, international management, conflict management, international relations and public policy.

Book International Legal Dimension of Terrorism

Download or read book International Legal Dimension of Terrorism written by Pablo Antonio Fernández-Sánchez and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-12-23 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ever before International Humanitarian Law needs to find new solutions to new types of conflicts. The current state of the fight against terrorism is without doubt one of the new problems facing international society and one of the concerns of International Humanitarian Law. This volume offers reflections on the international legal theory of terrorism, international responsibility, the obligation to prevent terrorist acts, terrorism in armed conflicts, the responses to terrorism by regional international organizations and the legal limits to the fight against terrorism. The contributors consist of academics (and politicians) from Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon and Israel, as well as from Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and a representative for the Organisation of American States. The book thus contains a wide, multidisciplinary debate, with an emphasis on a Mediterranean perspective. In addition to examining all aspects of international terrorism, the objective of the symposium which gave rise to these essays was to establish some guidelines, in the form of a Declaration, to serve as the basis for the UN’s High Level Group for the Alliance of Civilisations on the subject of international terrorism. This overall objective was achieved with the adoption of the Huelva Declaration for an Alliance of Civilisations against Terrorism, the text of which is included at the end of this book.

Download or read book International Terrorism Post 9 11 written by Asaf Siniver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume brings together both western and non-western approaches to counter-terrorism in the post-9/11 era. This multi-cultural study of counter-terrorism strategies identifies common lessons from failed and successful attempts to counter the terrorist threat and provides guidelines for an effective counter-terrorism strategy. The book explores the changing dynamics of terrorism from a range of perspectives – from the global threat posed by home-grown terrorism in North Africa and the larger security dimensions in the Middle East, to the various strategies employed by western and non-western societies in their efforts to develop effective counter-terrorism strategies. Core themes in the book include the divergent dynamics of the phenomena categorised under the 'terrorism' label, and the domestic, national and regional variants of international terrorism. As such, the book offers in-depth analysis of the relationship between the local and the global, both in the root causes of, and responses to, terrorism since 9/11. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and political violence, security studies and IR.
