The papers explore a wide range of topics related to macromolecular chemistry, including polyelectrolytes, biologically active synthetic polymers, and spans of polymer chains. The use of polymers as chemical reagents is also considered. This book is comprised of 19 chapters and begins with an introduction to the close relation between polyelectrolytes and hydrophilic colloids. A survey of polyelectrolyte knowledge that has accumulated since about 1940 is also presented. The discussion then turns to biologically active synthetic polymers; polymers and other composites; theories of the condensed polymer state; polymer adsorption inferred from electrical double layer measurements; and mobility and conductivity of ions in and into polymeric solids. The structure and viscoelastic properties of ion-containing polymers in the solid state are also examined, along with the use of graphite insertion compounds as chemical reagents in organic chemistry. While lecturing on macromolecular science as a required subject for chemists and materials scientists on the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich (1960-1971), I needed a one-volume textbook which treated the whole field of macromolecular science, from its chemistry and physics to its applications, in a not too elementary manner. This textbook thus intends to bridge the gap between the often oversimplified introductory books and the highly specialized texts and monographs that cover only parts of macromolecular science. This first English edition is based on the third German edition (1975), which is about 40% different from the first German edition (1971), a result of rapid progress in macromolecular science and the less rapid education of the writer. This text intends to survey the whole field of macromolecular science. Its organization results from the following considerations. The chemical structure of macromolecular compounds should be independent of the method of synthesis, at least in the ideal case. Part I is thus concerned with the chemical and physical structure of macro molecules. Properties depend on structure. Solution properties are thus discussed in Part II, solid state properties in Part III. There are other reasons for discussing properties before syntheses: For example, it is difficult to under stand equilibrium polymerization without knowledge of solution thermody of the glass temperature, etc.

It was an extraordinary occasion which included remarks by Professors Herman Mark, Charles Marvel, William Bailey, and Charles Overberger, all past Chairmen of the Division. The Executive Committee of the Division of Polymer Chemistry felt that 1976 deserved even more attention since it was to be also the 25th, the Silver Anniversary, of the Division of Polymer Chemis try. This year would be a most appropriate one not only to review milestones in our discipline, but also to look to the future. It was decided to undertake this volume and Dr. R. D. October 26, 1972 marks the 60th birthday of Professor Sauer and we feel it is quite appropriate to make note of this event. All of the contrib uting authors have eagerly submitted their original works as an expression of their esteem and affection for this dedicated man, friend, husband, father, scientist and teacher. This book could have been made extremely voluminous and the Symposium could have gone on for days. However, the achievements of a man such as Jack Sauer do not have to be measured by the number of pages in a book nor the number of speakers at a meeting. A more meaningful measure is the sincerity and devotion with which these few pages were assembled. All of the contributions to these Proceedings are from invited speakers. Numbered among the contrib utors are some of Jack's ~ personal friends as well as numerous former students who are currently working in the field of polymer science and engineering. It will be apparent to all who know him that those included represent but a small portion of Jack's friends and students. Although a fairly exhaustive search was made before the invitations were sent the number of omissions is both extremely large and unavoidable.
