Book excerpt: These 15th Proceedings provide an overview of the ongoing research and management activities on polar bears in the circumpolar Arctic. Together with the previous 14 proceedings, they provide an historic record of the international effort in protecting, studying, and managing polar bears. The document addresses more recent concerns of threats arising as a consequence of increased human activities in both the Arctic and in regions far beyond the Arctic. Previous proceedings included a Status Report for each of the world's subpopulations, which focused largely on the known or unknown status as it related to harvest. In the Status Report of the 15th Proceedings, we provide a more comprehensive assessment of all threats to the status of each polar bear subpopulation.

Book Storks Ibises and Spoonbills of the World

Download or read book Storks Ibises and Spoonbills of the World written by James Hancock and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the world's largest and most spectacular birds are to be found among this group of wading birds. Tragically, they also include many of the world's most endangered species, as changes in land use erode their wetland habitats. Some like the White Stork have lived alongside humans for hundreds of years and are well known from numerous studies. Others, like the Storm's stork and ibises of West Africa, South-East Asia and South America live so secluded a life in the remote corners of the globe that they will probably be extinct before even the most basic details of their biology are known. In this monograph, three authors and two artists have combined their skills to capture what is known of this group of wading birds. The text opens with general chapters on taxonomy and feeding, breeding and behavior, followed by detailed coverage of each species. Feeding behaviour species list: American wood stork - mycteria americana: milky stork - mycteria cinerea: yellowbilled stork - mycteria ibis: painted stork - mycteria leucocephala: African openbill stork - anastomus oscitans: Asian openbill stork - anastomus lamelligerus: black stork - ciconia nigra: adbim's stork - ciconia abdimii: woolynecked stork - ciconia episcopus: storm's stork - ciconia stormi: maguari stork - ciconia maguari: white stork - ciconia ciconia: oriental white stork - ciconia boyciana: blacknecked stork - ephippiorhynchus asiaticus: saddlebill stork - ephipporhynchus sengalensis: jabiru stork - jabiru myceteria: lesser adjutant stork - leptopilos javanicus: greater adjutant stork - leptoptilos dubius: marabou stork: leptoptilos crumeniferus: shoebill - balaeniceps rex: American white ibis - eudocimus ruber: barefaced ibis - phimosus infuscatus: glossy ibis - plegadis falcinellus: whitefaced ibis - plegadis chihi: puna ibis - plegadis ridgwayi: sharptailed ibis - cercibis oxycerca: plumbeous ibis - harpiprion caerulscens: buffnecked ibis - theristicus caudatus: green ibis - mesembrinibis cayennensis: hadada ibis - bostrychia hagedash: wattled ibis - bostrychia carunculata: oliv ibis - bostrychia olivacea: spotbreasted ibis - bostrychia reae madagascar crested this - loghotihis cristata: sacred this - threskiornis aethiopicus: oriental white ibis - threskionis melanoaphaius: Australian white ibis - threskiornis molucca: strawnecked ibis - threskiornis spinicollis: waldrapp ibis - eronticus eremita: bald ibis - geronticus calvus: black ibis - pseudibis papillosa: giant ibis - thaumatibis gigantea: oriential crested ibis - nipponia

Book Lyster s International Wildlife Law

Download or read book Lyster s International Wildlife Law written by Michael Bowman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-23 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of international wildlife law has been one of the most significant exercises in international law-making during the last fifty years. This second edition of Lyster's International Wildlife Law coincides with both the UN Year of Biological Diversity and the twenty-fifth anniversary of Simon Lyster's first edition. The risk of wildlife depletion and species extinction has become even greater since the 1980s. This new edition provides a clear and authoritative analysis of the key treaties which regulate the conservation of wildlife and habitat protection, and of the mechanisms available to make them work. The original text has also been significantly expanded to include analysis of the philosophical and welfare considerations underpinning wildlife protection, the cross-cutting themes of wildlife and trade, and the impact of climate change and other anthropogenic interferences with species and habitat. Lyster's International Wildlife Law is an indispensable reference work for scholars, practitioners and policy-makers alike.

Book The Live Bird Trade in Tanzania

Download or read book The Live Bird Trade in Tanzania written by R. K. Tibanyenda and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1996 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of keeping live birds in captivity has been widespread throughout this century and has increased considerably as the 20th century comes to a close. In the last decade or so, the increased trade in live birds from Tanzania has given rise to a number of concerns regarding the sustainability of the trade, its effects on bird numbers, and illegal trafficking. As part of its efforts to palliate the lack of legislation and planning in this domain and to evaluate the effects of this trade, in 1990 the Tanzanian government initiated the Planning and Assessment for Wildlife Management (PAWM) project. As part of this project, a workshop on the live bird trade in Tanzania was organized in Dar Es Salaam in December 1991 and gave rise to a series of initiatives. This publication provides a record of these initiatives and of the PAWN's efforts to arrive at and implement them. It also provides a record of the papers presented during the workshop and the recommendations that emerged therefrom.

Book State of the World s Birds 2004

Download or read book State of the World s Birds 2004 written by BirdLife International and published by . This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the fundamental importance of biodiversity, we knowsurprisingly little about it. We are sure that it is disappearingfast, yet at present we cannot even measure progress (orotherwise) towards the 2010 target set by world leaders forslowing this loss. This BirdLife assessment examines what the bestknown group of living things, birds, can tell us about the stateof biodiversity, the pressures upon it and the solutions that arebeing, or should be, put in place. It is a synthesis of currentknowledge and provides a benchmark against which we can assess ourefforts to conserve biodiversity in the future.`Anexciting testimony to BirdLife's Intent and capacity to influencepolicy at the highest levels... gives a clear overview of howindividual observations contribute to the bigger picture...auseful digest of contemporary conservation science presented in aless technical way. Paul Jepson, Birding Asia`Thematerial is presented in such a clear, compact and exciting waythat everyone who turns the pages will have their mind focused onthe problems raised... should be in every school, academic andlocal library.'Biological Conservation`A 'Red Book' forthe state of the planet, using the best known group of animals, birds, as examples to show what has happened, what is stillhappening, and what we are starting to do about it.'BullABC`A most useful document for all involved in conservationand conservation education.' Ibis`Full of interestingstories... illustrates that BirdLife is not narrowly concernedwith saving birds from people, but tries to use the joy and appealof birdwatching as a vehicle for better management of this world,so that birds as well as people can thrive... BirdLife emphasizesthe need to work together with local people, engaging Site SupportGroupsaround their priority sites. The approach is well aligned withefforts towards sustainable development, and the publication iswell suited as hand-out material for aidinstitutions.'Oryx`The overall picture is grim, but thebook demonstrates that there is much we can do, concluding thatlasting solutions require lasting change, and the major challengesare not scientific, but social and political.'Wingspan
