Book Divided Europeans Understanding Ethnicities in Conflict

Download or read book Divided Europeans Understanding Ethnicities in Conflict written by Tim Allen and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critiques the concepts of cultural functionalism and biologised ethnicity. The chapters examine ethnicities in conflict across Europe, and have been selected on the grounds that they not only provide a rich ethnographic account of overt ethnic conflict or racial violence, but also relate these local situations to wider processes. The contributors do not put forward a single homogeneous point of view, but they all assume perspectives that are opposed to the prevalent simplistic primordialism of most media coverage and political analysis. Most of the contributors are anthropologists and have presented drafts of their chapters at a series of meetings organised by a network called the Forum Against Violence. Many of the articles have appeared previously in the International Journal on Minority and Group Rights (Volume 4). This book should be of interest to academics and practitioners in the fields of human rights, anthropology and related topics.

Book Relational peace practices

Download or read book Relational peace practices written by Anna Jarstad and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new approach for studying peace beyond the absence of war. As war ends, the varying nature of the peace that ensues has been the object of much debate. Through in-depth case studies, including Cyprus, Cambodia, South Africa, Abkhazia, Transnistria/Russia, Colombia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Myanmar, the book illustrates how conceptualising ‘relational peace’ provides a framework that can be applied across cases and actors, different levels of analysis, a variety of geographical contexts and using different temporal perspectives and types of data. This novel framework enables improved empirical studies of peace. The book contributes nuanced understandings of peace in particular settings and demonstrates the multifaceted nature of peaceful relations – what is termed ‘relational peace practices’ – making important contributions to the field of studying peace beyond the absence of war.

Book Walls Borders Boundaries

Download or read book Walls Borders Boundaries written by Marc Silberman and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that walls, borders, boundaries--and their material and symbolic architectures of division and exclusion--engender their very opposite? This edited volume explores the crossings, permeations, and constructions of cultural and political borders between peoples and territories, examining how walls, borders, and boundaries signify both interdependence and contact within sites of conflict and separation. Topics addressed range from the geopolitics of Europe's historical and contemporary city walls to conceptual reflections on the intersection of human rights and separating walls, the memory politics generated in historically disputed border areas, theatrical explorations of border crossings, and the mapping of boundaries within migrant communities.

Download or read book Crisis and Conciliation written by James Ker-Lindsay and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Abdullah Ocalan, leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), was arrested in February 1999, it marked a turning point in relations between Greece and Turkey. As the country's most wanted man, his arrest was greeted with jubilation throughout most of Turkey. However, it also led to a public outcry when it emerged that he had been captured leaving the Greek Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. This was seen as definitive proof that the Greek Government had been aiding and abetting the PKK. In the days and weeks that followed the arrest, relations between the Aegean neighbours sank to their lowest level since the summer of 1974, when Athens and Ankara had come to the brink of war over Cyprus. However, by the end of the year, the picture could not have been more different. An improbable series of events that included a regional conflict, two major disasters and the death of a senior Greek politician had led to a complete transformation in the relations between the two countries. The crowning moment of this change came in December when Greece dropped its long-standing opposition to Turkish candidacy for EU membership. How did this remarkable change come about? Who should take the credit? And what did it mean for diplomatic relations in the Eastern Mediterranean? This is the story of how two countries started down a path to peace after decades of tension and hostility and how, over the course of one monumental year, relations between Greece and Turkey went from the brink of conflict to an unprecedented affirmation of friendship and solidarity.

Book Keeping the Peace in the Cyprus Crisis of 1963 64

Download or read book Keeping the Peace in the Cyprus Crisis of 1963 64 written by A. James and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-11-28 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Cold War the small state of Cyprus was of great strategic importance to the West. Britain, the United States, and Nato all had valuable installations there; and any armed conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots could easily suck two nearby Nato members - Greece and Turkey - into war. When therefore, intercommunal fighting broke out in Cyprus in December 1963, the West was deeply embarrassed. This book examines the consequential efforts of, first Britain, and then the UN, to keep the peace.

Book The Oxford Handbook of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations written by Joachim Koops and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 1031 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations presents an innovative, authoritative, and accessible examination and critique of the United Nations peacekeeping operations. Since the late 1940s, but particularly since the end of the cold war, peacekeeping has been a central part of the core activities of the United Nations and a major process in global security governance and the management of international relations in general. The volume will present a chronological analysis, designed to provide a comprehensive perspective that highlights the evolution of UN peacekeeping and offers a detailed picture of how the decisions of UN bureaucrats and national governments on the set-up and design of particular UN missions were, and remain, influenced by the impact of preceding operations. The volume will bring together leading scholars and senior practitioners in order to provide overviews and analyses of all 65 peacekeeping operations that have been carried out by the United Nations since 1948. As with all Oxford Handbooks, the volume will be agenda-setting in importance, providing the authoritative point of reference for all those working throughout international relations and beyond.
