Book International Organization for Standardization Methods for Determination of Asbestos in Air

Download or read book International Organization for Standardization Methods for Determination of Asbestos in Air written by Eric J. Chatfield and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two International Standards for measurement of asbestos in air by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been approved. A key feature of the ISO TEM methods is the ability, from a single examination, to derive fiber concentrations for comparison with all known legislated control limits, and to provide a coded description of the size and nature of each asbestos structure to assist in the interpretation of health effects. The direct-transfer TEM method for determination of asbestos in air (ISO 10312) was published as an International Standard in May 1995. Voting on an indirect-transfer TEM method (ISO 13794) has been completed, and the final draft has been submitted for publication. A method for determination of the concentration of inorganic fibers in air, based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM), has recently been submitted for voting as a Draft International Standard, currently designated as ISO/DIS 14966. A new working group, ISO/TC 146/SC 6/WG4, was formed in late 1996, to develop International Standards for sampling strategy for determination of asbestos and other mineral fibers in building atmospheres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental forensics is the application of scientific techniques for the purpose of identifying the source and age of a contaminant. Over the past several years, this study has been expanding as a course of study in academia, government and commercial markets. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are among the governmental agencies that utilize the study of environmental forensics to ensure national security and to ensure that companies are complying with standards. Even the International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (INECE), a group supported by the European Commission and the World Bank, utilizes the study of environmental forensics as it applies to terror threats. This title is a hands-on guide for environmental scientists, engineers, consultants and industrial scientists to identify the origin and age of a contaminant in the environment and the issues involved in the process. An expansion of the authors' first title with Academic Press, Introduction to Environmental Forensics, this is a state-of-the-art reference for those exploring the scientific techniques available. - Up-to-date compendium for referencing forensic techniques unique to particular contaminants. - International scientific unit system - Contributors from around the world providing international examples and case studies.

Book excerpt: The first edition of Asbestos: Risk Assessment, Epidemiology, and Health Effects received critical acclaim due to the interdisciplinary nature of its content. Editors Ronald Dodson and Samuel Hammar have carefully kept this popular focus while updating and expanding the topics covered in the first edition with the help of internationally known experts. While there are hundreds of books available on many different aspects of asbestos, none contain the encyclopedic, comprehensive coverage you will find here. See What’s New in the Second Edition: Definitions of asbestos by different methodologies and the potential impact that those forms have on health Internationally accepted sampling/analytical schemes Findings of major asbestos-related diseases that continue to increase in most industrialized countries where asbestos is widely used Information on asbestos-induced diseases in biological systems Expanded regulations chapter Copiously illustrated with diagrams, tables, and photographs, including some in color, the book remains an interdisciplinary resource on the major issues in asbestos exposure and human health, with coverage that spans history, pathology, and epidemiology as well as sampling, analysis, and regulatory issues. The editors’ expertise and careful updating set this book apart, making it a comprehensive resource that interlinks diverse specialties. They provide an updated and expanded state-of-the-art discussion of important interdisciplinary factors associated with asbestos-related issues in an easy-to-use reference.

Book Proposed ASTM Method for the Determination of Asbestos in Air by TEM and Information on Interfering Fibers

Download or read book Proposed ASTM Method for the Determination of Asbestos in Air by TEM and Information on Interfering Fibers written by W. Randy Boltin and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The draft of the ASTM Test Method for air entitled: "Airborne Asbestos Concentration in Ambient and Indoor Atmospheres as Determined by Transmission Electron Microscopy Direct Transfer (TEM)" (ASTM Z7077Z) is an adaptation of the International Standard, ISO 10312. It is currently undergoing a revision in regard to the reporting of confidence intervals for analysis results. The method differs considerably from the AHERA air clearance analysis method in that the counting rules provide a fairly complete characterization of the sizes of structures and structural components of asbestos-containing particles in the air. With the information derived from a full analysis, it is possible to determine the total asbestos structure count, the total fiber count, the PCM equivalent fiber count, the AHERA equivalent structure count and a number of other count values based on specific criteria. Examples of nonasbestos fibers which might interfere with the analysis (antigorite, palygorskite, halloysite, hornblende, sepiolite and vermiculite scrolls) are also included.

Book Advances in the Toxicity of Construction and Building Materials

Download or read book Advances in the Toxicity of Construction and Building Materials written by F. Pacheco-Torgal and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the Toxicity of Construction and Building Materials presents the potential and toxic effects of building materials on human health, along with tactics on how to minimize exposure. Chapters are divided into four sections covering the toxicity of indoor environments, fire toxicity, radioactive materials, and toxicity from plastics, metals, asbestos, nanoparticles and construction wastes. Key chapters focus on the reduction of chemical emissions in houses with eco-labelled building materials and potential risks posed by indoor pollutants that may include volatile organic compounds (VOC), formaldehyde, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC), radon, NOx, asbestos and nanoparticles. Known illnesses and reactions that can be triggered by these toxic building materials include asthma, itchiness, burning eyes, skin irritations or rashes, nose and throat irritation, nausea, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, reproductive impairment, disruption of the endocrine system, impaired child development and birth defects, immune system suppression, and even cancer. - Provides an essential guide to the potential toxic effects of building materials on human health - Comprehensively examines materials responsible for formaldehyde and volatile organic compound emissions, as well as semi-volatile organic compounds - Presents coverage on fire toxicity and an evaluation of the radioactivity of building materials - Includes several cases studies throughout and addresses current international standards
