Book International News in the 21st Century

Download or read book International News in the 21st Century written by Chris Paterson and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of September 11, the nature of international news has resumed a central place in media debates and political analysis. In the first collection of its kind, influential journalists and scholars probe the future of international news. Topics include the conglomerates, ethnocentric imbalances in news reporting, the rise of non-Anglo news channels, approaches for reconstructing the international news agenda, the impacts of new technologies of production and diffusion, international news rhetoric, and audiences' imagination of the "global" and their perceptions of international news coverage. In a dialogue that is both descriptive and prescriptive, this book begins an encounter between media practitioners, activists, and academics, constituencies that have tended to talk past each other but are now beginning to find some shared concerns.

Book International News Agencies

Download or read book International News Agencies written by Michael B. Palmer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International news-agencies, such as Reuters, the Associated Press and Agence France-Presse, have long been ‘unsung heroes’ of the media sphere. From the mid-nineteenth century, in Britain, the US, France and, to a lesser extent, Germany, a small number of agencies have fed their respective countries with international news reports. They informed governments, businesses, media and, indirectly, the general public. They helped define ‘news’. Drawing on years of archival research and first-hand experience of major news agencies, this book provides a comprehensive history of the leading news agencies based in the UK, France and the USA, from the early 1800s to the present day. It retraces their relations with one another, with competitors and clients, and the types of news, information and data they collected, edited and transmitted, via a variety of means, from carrier-pigeons to artificial intelligence. It examines the sometimes colourful biographies of agency newsmen, and the rise and fall of news agencies as markets and methods shifted, concluding by looking to the future of the organisations.

Book Seeking Truth in International TV News

Download or read book Seeking Truth in International TV News written by Vivien Marsh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts CGTN (formerly CCTV-News) and the BBC’s international television news head-to-head, interrogating competing ‘truths’ in the exacting business of news reporting. Written by a media scholar and former long-serving BBC News journalist, Seeking Truth in International TV News asks if China’s English-language television news programmes are little more than state propaganda, and if the BBC can be viewed as a universal news standard to which all other broadcasters should aspire. Over 8 years of Xi Jinping’s rule, it investigates how the international TV news channels of CGTN and the BBC reported on Chinese politics, protests in Hong Kong, disasters, China in Africa, and insurgency and its suppression in Xinjiang. The comparison reveals uneven editorial imperatives at the Chinese broadcaster and raises questions about the BBC’s professed tenets of balance and impartiality. It also illustrates how Chinese journalists commit ‘small acts of journalism’ that push the boundaries of information control. A rigorous analysis of reportage from the two channels, this book will be relevant to scholars of global media, journalism, international relations and public diplomacy. It will also interest those in academia, the media and international affairs who want to examine the nature of news and ‘soft power’ in a comparative context.

Book News International and phone hacking

Download or read book News International and phone hacking written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Culture, Media and Sport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report concentrates on the issue of whether witnesses have previously misled a select committee of the House of Commons over the extent and knowledge of phone-hacking. The Committee concludes that several individuals misled the Committee in 2009 and more recently, and that the News of the World and News International corporately misled the Committee about the true nature and extent of the internal investigations they carried out into phone-hacking, made statements that were not fully truthful, and withheld documents. The companies' directors - including Rupert Murdoch and James Murdoch - should be prepared to take responsibility for these failings. The Committee reports its findings for the House of Commons to decide whether a contempt has been committed and, if so, what punishment should be imposed.

Book International News in the Digital Age

Download or read book International News in the Digital Age written by Judith Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new research presented in this volume suggests that general perceptions (cultural, psychological, geographical), allied to the customs and values of journalism, and underpinned by the uses of technology, significantly shape international news. This gives rise to a blend of the old and the new; traditions of cultural centredness and innovative practices; anchorages of place and the rootlessness of globalization. Technology per se has not swept all before it. On the other hand, its uses have altered the means and methods of international news sourcing, construction and dissemination. Consequently, the uptake of technology has contributed to fundamental changes in style and form, and has greatly facilitated cross-cultural exchanges. The category ‘international news’ is now more of a hybrid, as recognized by the BBC and others. The chapters in this book demonstrate that this hybridity is unevenly distributed across geo-political domains, and often across time. Nevertheless, as the contributors to this volume show, the concept of ‘international news’ relies on tightly interwoven elements of orthodox journalism, social media, civic expression and public assembly.

Book International News Coverage and the Korean Conflict

Download or read book International News Coverage and the Korean Conflict written by Miri Moon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores journalism practices and the dynamics of international news media in Korea, and examines the ways in which Korean journalists and foreign correspondents cover news stories about the Korean conflict. It notably explores news gathering practices concerning the Korean conflict, and investigates factors that influence journalists’ news production through interview with foreign correspondents including bureau chiefs from news outlets as diverse as AP, Reuters, The New York Times, the BBC, Le Figaro, and the Mainichi Shimbun. Extending its coverage to provide a rationale for the proliferation of new media both from encoders and decoders’ perspectives, and drawing on lively empirical data to examine the processes of news production, the book addresses how international media impacts on the stability and security in the region under the influence of the competing superpowers – the United States and China.

Book The International Distribution of News

Download or read book The International Distribution of News written by Jonathan Silberstein-Loeb and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on newly available and extensive archival evidence, this book traces the history of international news agencies and associations around the world from 1848 to 1947. Jonathan Silberstein-Loeb argues that newspaper publishers formed news associations and patronized news agencies to cut the costs of news collection and exclude competitors from gaining access to the news. In this way, cooperation facilitated the distribution of news. The extent to which state regulation permitted cooperation, or prohibited exclusivity, determined the benefit newspaper publishers derived from these organizations. This book revises our understanding of the operation and organization of the Associated Press, the BBC, the Press Association, Reuters, and the United Press. It also sheds light on the history of competition policy respecting the press, intellectual property, and the regulation of telecommunications.

Download or read book Women and the UN written by Rebecca Adami and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical history of influential women in the United Nations and seeks to inspire empowerment with role models from bygone eras. The women whose voices this book presents helped shape UN conventions, declarations, and policies with relevance to the international human rights of women throughout the world today. From the founding of the UN up until the Latin American feminist movements that pushed for gender equality in the UN Charter, and the Security Council Resolutions on the role of women in peace and conflict, the volume reflects on how women delegates from different parts of the world have negotiated and disagreed on human rights issues related to gender within the UN throughout time. In doing so it sheds new light on how these hidden historical narratives enrich theoretical studies in international relations and global agency today. In view of contemporary feminist and postmodern critiques of the origin of human rights, uncovering women’s history of the United Nations from both Southern and Western perspectives allows us to consider questions of feminism and agency in international relations afresh. With contributions from leading scholars and practitioners of law, diplomacy, history, and development studies, and brought together by a theoretical commentary by the Editors, Women and the UN will appeal to anyone whose research covers human rights, gender equality, international development, or the history of civil society.
