Book Famous But No Children

Download or read book Famous But No Children written by J. O. Raber and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you have a right NOT to have children? Do we have a right NOT to be born? Choosing to remain 'child-free' or 'childless' is something that sparks various reactions - but not everyone has actually given it deep thought. The names and viewpoints discussed in this book may spur some thinking among those considering becoming parents, feminists, ecologists, the religious right, and the child-free community. The Internet is full of lists of people who are reported as not having had children; some of these lists contain errors. Here, the author has added dates and places of birth and death, to aid in verification. Also, while most lists focus on contemporary celebrities, in this book, the author presents an original list painstakingly compiled over these past years; it is not a copy of anyone else's list of names, and contains mostly historic individuals, illustrating how many of our cultural and scientific landmarks are the gifts childless people have bequeathed to humanity.

Book Sourcebook for Research in Music Third Edition

Download or read book Sourcebook for Research in Music Third Edition written by Allen Scott and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it was first published in 1993, the Sourcebook for Research in Music has become an invaluable resource in musical scholarship. The balance between depth of content and brevity of format makes it ideal for use as a textbook for students, a reference work for faculty and professional musicians, and as an aid for librarians. The introductory chapter includes a comprehensive list of bibliographical terms with definitions; bibliographic terms in German, French, and Italian; and the plan of the Library of Congress and the Dewey Decimal music classification systems. Integrating helpful commentary to instruct the reader on the scope and usefulness of specific items, this updated and expanded edition accounts for the rapid growth in new editions of standard works, in fields such as ethnomusicology, performance practice, women in music, popular music, education, business, and music technology. These enhancements to its already extensive bibliographies ensures that the Sourcebook will continue to be an indispensable reference for years to come.

Book Youth Culture in China

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Clark
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2012-05-07
  • ISBN : 1107379237
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Youth Culture in China written by Paul Clark and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives and aspirations of young Chinese (those between 14 and 26 years old) have been transformed in the past five decades. By examining youth cultures around three historical points - 1968, 1988 and 2008 - this book argues that present-day youth culture in China has both international and local roots. Paul Clark describes how the Red Guards and the sent-down youth of the Cultural Revolution era carved out a space for themselves, asserting their distinctive identities, despite tight political controls. By the late 1980s, Chinese-style rock music, sports and other recreations began to influence the identities of Chinese youth, and in the twenty-first century, the Internet offers a new, broader space for expressing youthful fandom and frustrations. From the 1960s to the present, this book shows how youth culture has been reworked to serve the needs of the young Chinese.

Bringing together over 25 high-profile authors from around the world, this volume addresses such questions as: What impacts does globalization have on cultural creativity and innovation? How is the evolving world ′map′ of creativity related to the drivers and patterns of globalization? What are the relationships between creative acts, clusters, genres or institutions and cultural diversity? The volume is an indispensable reference tool for all scholars and students of contemporary arts and culture.

Book Sounds of the Borderland

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine Baker
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-04-01
  • ISBN : 1317052412
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Sounds of the Borderland written by Catherine Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sounds of the Borderland is the first book-length study of how popular music became a medium for political communication and contested identification during and after Croatia's war of independence from Yugoslavia. It extends existing cultural studies literature on music, politics and the state, which has largely been grounded in Western European and North American political systems. It also responds to an emerging fascination with the culture and politics of contemporary south-east Europe, expanding scholarship on the post-Yugoslav conflicts by going on to encompass significant social and political changes into the present day. The outbreak of war in 1991 saw almost every professional musician in Croatia take part in a wave of patriotic music-making and the powerful state television system strive to bring popular music under its control. As the political imperative shifted from securing national survival to consolidating a homogenous nation-state, the music industry responded with several strategies for creating a national popular music, producing messages about the nation and, in the ongoing debates over the origins of the folk music that inspired many songs, a way to define the nation by expressing what Croatia was not. The war on ethnic ambiguity which cut through individuals' social and creative lives played out across the airwaves, sales racks and gossip columns of a small country that imagined itself a historical and cultural borderland. These explicit and implicit narratives of nationhood connect many political phases: the months of fiercest fighting, the stabilised front, the uneasy post-war years when the symbolic frontline region of eastern Slavonia had still not returned to Croatian sovereignty, the euphoria and instability after the end of the Tudjman regime in 2000, and Croatia's fraught journey towards the European Union. Baker's book provides valuable insight into the role of music in a wartime and post-conflict society and will be essential reading for researchers and students interested in south-east Europe or the transformation of entertainment during and after conflict.
