This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of International Law After the World War In accordance with its original character, this book offers only a survey of the future problems of international law. In this work I have given merely some directing outlines. I have been obliged to forgo entering upon the individual problems here, since this would have claimed materially more space and also more time. But I also believe that m the present hour it 18 above all necessary to call to mind once more the fundamental tendencies in the development of international law. The problems to be solved for international law in the future are neither simple nor small in number. We may rejoice if, upon the conclusion of peace, we succeed in obtaining an agreement on the basic principles. The future work will, however, take decades. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Legal Questions of the Peace Conference: Address I might expand the list of subjects for consideration suggested by the Treaty of Peace which will invite the' learning and wisdom of those who will, I sincerely hope, be charged with the codification of the principles of international law. Even if I subject myself to the charge of repetition, let me say that I most earnestly advocate the formulation of such a code by an international conference of jurists and publicists. With a definite standard of legal rights sanctioned by the nations the administration of international relations as well as the administration of international justice will become more con sistent and less a prey to expediency and political opportunism. Book Three Centuries of Treaties of Peace

Download or read book Three Centuries of Treaties of Peace written by Walter George Frank Phillimore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Centuries of Treaties of Peace: And Their Teaching A preface is in the nature of an apology. My excuse for the introduction of this work to the public is to be found in the following considerations: We are all looking forward to the future peace. We are longing for it. At the same time we are conscious how difficult it will be to make peace, how specially difficult to make a sure and lasting peace, difficult, even supposing that every nation and its rulers sincerely and heartily desire it. Never was there a war in which so many Nations were engaged. Never has there been a settlement of so many questions as this peace will have to settle. These will not be mere questions of taking so much territory from one State and transferring it to another. The creation and dissolution of States will come under discussion. An old State may have to be divided; two old States may be thrown together. New States and Confederations may arise; old States may be submerged and destroyed. Book World Peace Or Principles of International Law in Their Application to Efforts for the Preservation of the Peace of the World Classic Reprint

Aldrich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World Peace, or Principles of International Law in Their Application to Efforts for the Preservation of the Peace of the World But events are moving rapidly. The great epoch producing period has not passed, and it will not have passed until the questions of an attempt at permanent peace and of reconstrue tion are settled, and events will move rapidly until that time, not fast enough to please some, but possibly too fast to insure the permanence of the settlement that shall be attained. When it became apparent that the American people were going to be called upon, either through the right of petition or at the polls, to express themselves upon the question of a pro posed constitution for a League of Nations I was an earnest advocate of the belief that every person should study such questions and that all who had given such study serious con sideration should express themselves to the end that any action on the part of the people would be the result of thought and delibera tion. Book Peace Treaties and International Law in European History

Download or read book Peace Treaties and International Law in European History written by Randall Lesaffer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-19 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the formation of the modern law of nations, peace treaties played a pivotal role. Many basic principles and rules that governed and still govern relations between states were introduced and elaborated in the great peace treaties from the Renaissance onwards. Nevertheless, until recently few scholars have studied these primary sources of the law of nations from a juridical perspective. In this edited collection, specialists from all over Europe, including legal and diplomatic historians, international lawyers and an International Relations theorist, analyse peace treaty practice from the late fifteenth century to the Peace of Versailles of 1919. Important emphasis is given to the doctrinal debate about peace treaties and the influence of older, Roman and medieval concepts on modern practices. This book goes back further in time beyond the epochal Peace of Treaties of Westphalia of 1648 and this broader perspective allows for a reassessment of the role of the sovereign state in the modern international legal order.

Book A Treaty of Arbitration Or a Code of International Law the Basis of Peace

Download or read book A Treaty of Arbitration Or a Code of International Law the Basis of Peace written by James Willis Patterson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treaty of Arbitration, or a Code of International Law, the Basis of Peace: An Address Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen: The magnitude of this assembly has surprised my anticipation. A New Englander addressing for the first time an audience like this of Old Englanders and from a London platform, should have a large inheritance of English pluck if he would not realize something of the perturbation of the school-boy who essays his first oration. In discharging the duty assigned me, however, I am more disturbed with the consciousness that I can add nothing of thought or motive to what has been so happily and forcibly urged by the distinguished speakers who have preceded me. Much less can I hope to contribute any new argument to the rich and cogent literature which since the close of the Napoleonic wars has been given to the cause of peace. As delegates, we bear the credentials of no one of the numerous peace and arbitration associations of the world, nor are we the accredited agents of any congress or institute of international law; but, moved by the same transcendent purposes, as members of an older and broader organization which seeks the brotherhood of mankind, we speak for that peace which is "the ultimate condition of all progress in religion and civilization." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Law, Vol. 1: Peace We have not attempted a deductive treatment. Such a treatment might start from state sovereignty or from the assertion of certain rights as inherent in a state, but it would lead in many cases to the admission of clashing sovereignties or rights, that is to no result, unless the starting-points were defined with a precision only attainable by embodying the conclusions in them. International sovereignty and rights are the growth of recent centuries, and the very object of our science is to ascertain the point at which they now stand. Some of the earlier stages of that growth were assisted by theories of a law of nature and nations, of which what is good survives under the name of justice, a ground more solid but less capable of being systematised, while the attempt to transfer wholesale to associa tions what is true of natural individuals was bound to fail. Book The Principles of International Law Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of International Law Classic Reprint written by Thomas Joseph Lawrence and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of International Law The story I have to tell will be found in the text. I have not relegated important matter to notes, nor printed on my pages long quotations from other authors or excerpts from original authorities. I have preferred the much more labo rions task of extracting their substance and putting it in my own words into the body of the book, which I trust has gained thereby in both the decrease of bulk and increase of readableness. But I have taken care to provide the means of checking my assertions. At the bottom of nearly every page will be found references, by the use of which teachers and students can amplify or correct the statements in the text and men of aflairs obtain the more detailed information they may want for practical purposes. The notes are, I h0pe, sufficient. My object has been to make them adequate without over loading them with matter. I have not, for instance, referred to a large number of writers of all degrees of authority, when the citation of a few great ones gave the necessary support to my argument; nor have I quoted a dozen cases, when one or two were enough. I have also taken care that most of the cases given in the text should be something more than mere names to my readers. The material facts are almost always described, so that the points of law may be seen inviii preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
