Book Promoting and Managing International Investment

Download or read book Promoting and Managing International Investment written by J Anthony VanDuzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of international investment policy and policy-making, drawing upon perspectives from law, economics, international business, and political science. International investment is a complex phenomenon with significant effects worldwide. Developing effective policies and strategies to attract investment in sufficient quantities and marshal it to contribute to sustainable development is a critical challenge for governments at all levels. This book’s interdisciplinary approach provides fresh insights into the mix of policy options available to governments seeking investment to support their country’s (or region’s) development. As well as identifying ways to effectively design, implement, and assess policies to attract foreign investment, it explores how to manage foreign investment’s effects. Various dimensions of international investment policy are discussed, including benefits and costs (economic, environmental, social, and political) of foreign investment, the significance of global value chains, state-owned enterprises and sovereign wealth funds, and the role of tax policy, investment promotion, and policy advocacy, location branding, investment treaties, and national security considerations. Through its contributions to a new interdisciplinary understanding of international investment policy-making, this book will benefit students and scholars working in areas such as international business, international economic law, international economics, development economics, international development, and international political economy as well as being a valuable resource for policy-makers.

Book Asian Perspectives on International Investment Law

Download or read book Asian Perspectives on International Investment Law written by Junji Nakagawa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With changes to the international investment law landscape and Asian countries now actively developing their network of bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and free trade agreements (FTAs), this volume studies issues relating to Asian perspectives on international investment law and forecasts the future of Asian contribution to its science and practice. The book discusses the major factors that have been driving Asian countries to new directions in international investment rule-making and dispute settlement. It also looks at whether Asian countries are crafting a new model of international investment law to reflect their specific socio-cultural values. Finally, the book examines whether there are any ‘Asian’ styles of international investment rule-making and dispute settlement, or if individual Asian countries are seeking specific national ‘models’ based on economic structure and geopolitical interests. This unique collection is exceptionally useful to students, scholars and practitioners of international investment law, international trade law and public international law.

Book International Investment Perspectives 2003

Download or read book International Investment Perspectives 2003 written by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published by Organization for Economic. This book was released on 2003 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment (FDI) has cooled dramatically. Many OECD countries are presently recording inflows of less than 25% of what they received just two years ago. However, developing countries and transition economies have been less affected by the decline. They now receive more than a third of worldwide FDI flows, underscoring the potential of direct investment to act as a catalyst for growth and sustainable development. China is a case in point. In 2002, the Chinese economy became the world's foremost recipient of FDI, surpassing even the largest OECD countries. China's accession to the World Trade Organisation has played a role in this, but so have ongoing efforts at liberalising the national investment environment and improving standards for public and corporate governance. China's ongoing challenge is to proceed with its efforts at moving from a system based on financial and other special incentives to rules-based policies for attracting investment. OECD's views on FDI incentives are expressed in a recent Committee report released in the present edition. A particularly important element of public governance is transparency. Past evidence shows that countries that fail to treat foreign enterprises in a sufficiently transparent manner are unlikely to attract economically relevant levels of FDI. The present issue of "International Investment Perspectives "contains a Special Focus dealing with the links between transparency and investment. This volume contains: - Trends and recent developments - China's investment policy reform: From incentives to modern rules - Policies and incentives for attracting foreign direct investment - Special focus: Transparency and investment - Survey of Implementation of Methodological Standards for Direct Investment

Book The Evolving International Investment Regime

Download or read book The Evolving International Investment Regime written by Jose E. Alvarez and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growth of the global economy over the past two decades, foreign direct investment (FDI) laws, at both the national and international levels, have undergone rapid development in order to strengthen the protection standards for foreign investors. In terms of international investment law, a network of international investment agreements has arisen as a way to address FDI growth. FDI backlash, reflective of more restrictive regulation, has also emerged. The Evolving International Investment Regime analyzes the existing challenges to the international investment regime, and addresses these challenges going forward. It also examines the dynamics of the international regime, as well as a broader view of the changing global economic reality both in the United States and in other countries. The content for the book is a compendium of articles by leading thinkers, originating from the International Investment Conference "What's New in International Investment Law and Policy?"

Book The Legitimacy of Investment Arbitration

Download or read book The Legitimacy of Investment Arbitration written by Daniel Behn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International investment arbitration remains one of the most controversial areas of globalisation and international law. This book provides a fresh contribution to the debate by adopting a thoroughly empirical approach. Based on new datasets and a range of quantitative, qualitative and computational methods, the contributors interrogate claims and counter-claims about the regime's legitimacy. The result is a nuanced picture about many of the critiques lodged against the regime, whether they be bias in arbitral decision-making, close relationships between law firms and arbitrators, absence of arbitral diversity, and excessive compensation. The book comes at a time when several national and international initiatives are under way to reform international investment arbitration. The authors discuss and analyse how the regime can be reformed and ow a process of legitimation might occur.
