Book International Grantmaking

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking study maps the dimensions and patterns of international giving by U.S. foundations in the 1990s, revealing dynamic growth in overseas funding and a dramatic shift in priorities tied to the end of the Cold War. The study examines more than 12,000 international grants made by 500 U.S. foundations and constructs a detailed picture of who makes grants, where the dollars go, and what the grants support. Examples include programs that promote sustainable development and the growth of civil society, preserve the world's cultural heritage, and protect human rights. The study also investigates the practice and challenges of international grantmaking, drawn from in-depth interviews with experienced funders. Up-to-date profiles of the international programs of 63 leading funders complete the portrait of U.S. giving trends. For a comparative view, the report features articles on the international activities of Japanese and European grantmakers. An extensive bibliography and summary of the regulatory framework for crossborder grants make this an essential resource for grantmakers, grantseekers, researchers, and NGO's both inside and outside the U.S. Prepared in cooperation with the Council on Foundations.

Book International Grantmaking by American Foundations

Download or read book International Grantmaking by American Foundations written by Joannie Tremblay-Boire and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do American foundations make international grants to certain nonprofits and not others? Numerous studies have examined the determinants of American bilateral foreign aid allocation, but little attention has been paid to the drivers of private aid, including foundation grants. The number of foundations in the United States is growing consistently, as is the amount of grants they distribute. As inequality increases and private wealth becomes more concentrated in the United States, we can expect even more foundations to distribute private aid and potentially channel nonprofit recipients' priorities. Yet, even as nonprofits more generally are receiving increasing attention in political science, public policy, and other disciplines, foundations tend to be ignored by scholars despite their potential for monetary and ideological power. To study grantmaking by American foundations, I adopt a multi-method approach focusing on three factors: their external environment, internal organizational dynamics, and the interpersonal relationships of their staff and trustees with recipient organizations. First, I examine how factors that affect governmental foreign aid distribution may also influence American foundations' international grants. Using a panel of 146 countries for the 2003-2011 time period, I find that self-interest, U.S. foreign policy objectives and need in recipient countries influence foundations. Second, I focus on the internal dynamics within foundations during the grantmaking process through case studies. Here, I focus on how size, organizational structure, and internal politics influence funding priorities, the grantee selection process, and grant turnover. Third, I study how interpersonal networks between foundations and potential grantees affect grantmaking using social network and multivariate analysis. I expect that interlocking boards of directors between foundations and nonprofits will act as a channel for "connected" nonprofits to send and receive important information, thus making them more likely to receive grants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age of international philanthropy is upon us. Today, many of America's most prominent foundations support institutions or programs abroad, but few have been active on the global stage for as long as Carnegie Corporation of New York. A World of Giving provides a thorough, objective examination of the international activities of Carnegie Corporation, one of America's oldest and most respected philanthropic institutions, which was created by steel baron Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to support the “advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding.” The book explains in detail the grantmaking process aimed at promoting understanding across cultures and research in many nations across the world. A World of Giving highlights the vital importance of Carnegie Corporation's mission in guiding its work, and the role of foundation presidents as thought and action leaders. The presidents, trustees, and later on, staff members, are the human element that drives philanthropy and they are the lens through which to view the inner workings of philanthropic institutions, with all of their accompanying strengths and limitations, especially when embarking on international activities. It also does not shy away from controversy, including early missteps in Canada, race and poverty issues in the 1930s and 1980s related to South Africa, promotion of area studies affected by the McCarthy Era, the critique of technical assistance in developing countries, the century-long failure to achieve international understanding on the part of Americans, and recent critiques by Australian historians of the Corporation's nation-transforming work there. This is a comprehensive review of one foundation's work on the international stage as well as a model for how philanthropy can be practiced in a deeply interconnected world where conflicts abound, but progress can be spurred by thoughtful, forward-looking institutions following humanistic principles.

Book International Public Goods

Download or read book International Public Goods written by Marco A. Ferroni and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, the consequences of globalization call for the involvement not only of national governments but of the international development community as a whole. Such involvement needs to occur within a comprehensive framework that encompasses stakeholders from government, non-governmental organizations, and businesses acting together in partnership. This requires the leveraging of general aid and country-focused development resources along with encouraging private financing participation. 'International Public Goods' explains different ways that this type of framework might be structured and focuses on different financing strategies that can be developed. It acknowledges the value of country specific efforts while recommending a multi-national approach to addressing problems resulting from globalization. This book evaluates the concepts fundamental to the term ?public goods? and details alternative governance structures including the role of incentives.
