Download or read book Biochemical and Neurophysiological Correlation of Centrally Acting Drugs written by E. Trabucchi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Section on Pharmacology of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (SEPHAR), Proceedings of the Second International Pharmacological Meeting, August 20-23, 1963, Volume 2: Biochemical and Neurophysiological Correlation of Centrally Acting Drugs focuses on the composition, reactions, and applications of centrally acting drugs. The selection first offers information on the physiology of striopallidum in relation to extrapyramidal function and disorders and actions of dopa and dopamine in relation to function of the central nervous system. Discussions focus on correlation of behavioral and clinical states with metabolism of dopamine, functions of dopamine in the brain, and the central pharmacology of dopamine. The text then examines the role of brain dopamine (3-hydroxytyramine) in Parkinsonism, including behavior of dopamine in the extrapyramidal centers in patients with Parkinson's disease; brain dopamine and the extrapyramidal symptomatology of Parkinson's disease; and parallelism between Parkinson's disease and the Parkinson-like state induced by reserpine in man. The publication ponders on pharmacological studies on tremorine and metabolism of tremorine. The manuscript also takes a look at the contribution on the pathophysiology of intentional tremor; failure of Antiparkinson drugs to antagonize hypothermia in tremorine-treated rats; and significance of dopamine in psychomotor stimulant action. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in centrally acting drugs.

Download or read book Medication Related Falls in Older People written by Allen R. Huang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising a single repository of knowledge and scientific evidence in the field, this book provides strategies to mitigate fall risk by providing information on the complex interactions between aging processes, co-morbid conditions and prescribed medications in older patients. Geriatric health is becoming a more prominent issue as the population ages, and balancing the beneficial effects of medication against the potential and real side-effects in these patients involves a deliberate and thoughtful task: physiologic aging, the accumulation of co-morbidities, and the use of drugs to manage various conditions and symptoms generates a unique set of problems for each patient. Falls are a dreaded event in older people. The event can affect a person in a physical, and psychological manner, resulting in soft tissue and bony injury, fear of falling, and depression. The identification of and reduction in fall risks in older people is a worldwide concern, and reducing the incidence of falls is a ubiquitous quality measure of health care delivery. Heterogeneity amongst older people precludes a single solution. However, physicians and others involved in the care of geriatric patients will benefit from the presented insights into how medication use can be modified to limit its impact as a contributing factor.

Download or read book Security and International Law written by Mary E Footer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many challenges that society faces today, possibly none is more acute than the security of ordinary citizens when faced with a variety of natural or man-made disasters arising from climate and geological catastrophes, including the depletion of natural resources, environmental degradation, food shortages, terrorism, breaches of personal security and human security, or even the global economic crisis. States continue to be faced with a range of security issues arising from contested territorial spaces, military and maritime security and security threats relating to energy, infrastructure and the delivery of essential services. The theme of the book encompasses issues of human, political, military, socio-economic, environmental and energy security and raises two main questions. To what extent can international law address the types of natural and man-made security risks and challenges that threaten our livelihood, or very existence, in the twenty-first century? Where does international law fall short in meeting the problems that arise in different situations of insecurity and how should such shortcomings be addressed?
