Book Influencing Traits Before Birth

Download or read book Influencing Traits Before Birth written by Shaun D. Pattinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002.In this informative and captivating book the author presents a moral critique of the laws governing the creation of designer babies. Alan Gewirth’s Principle of Generic Consistency is used as the starting point for developing a framework, which is then used to critique the legal position in the EU countries (with particular reference to the UK), Canada and the USA. The conclusion the author reaches is that a proper moral response to the issues covered must take account of specified prima facie presumptions, to be applied by legitimately appointed regulatory bodies. The text assesses the adequacy of existing regulatory responses by reference to these presumptions. Also containing detailed appendices summarizing the legal position with regard to abortion and prenatal diagnosis, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, in vitro embryo research, cloning, and germ-line gene therapy in the countries mentioned above, this volume is an indispensable resource for both students and scholars with a keen interest in this highly contested field.

  • Pages : 663 pages

Download or read book Bioethics Yearbook written by B.A. Lustig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As noted in Volume 1, the Yearbook series alternates between a biennial volume tracing recent theological discussions on topics in bioethics and a biennial volume tracing recent regional discussions in bioethics. Volume 2 provides for the first time a comprehensive single-volume summary of recent international and regional developments on specific topics in bioethics. To give uniformity to the discussions all authors were asked to report on the following topics: new reproductive technologies, abortion, maternal-fetal conflicts, case of severely disabled newborns, consent of treatment and experimentation, confidentiality, equitable access to health care, ethical concerns raised by cost-containment measures, decisions to withhold or withdraw life-sustaining treatment, active euthanasia, the definition of death, organ donation and transplantation. The internationally respected contributors report on the following 16 areas: the United States, Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom and Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Germany/Austria/Switzerland, Eastern Europe, Spain/Portugal/Italy/Scandinavia, India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Australia/New Zealand, Council of Europe/EEC. The commentators draw on three sets of resources: Statutes, legislative proposals, and regulatory changes that directly influence, or have implications for, areas of bioethical concern; Case law and court judgments that shape, either decisively or suggestively, recent legal interpretations of particular issues of areas in bioethics; Formal statements of governmentally appointed commissions, advisory bodies, and representative professional groups, as well as less formal statements and recommendations of other organisations. In addition to providing timely summaries of recent developments, the volume offers rich and useful bibliographical references to a wide array of documents, many of which would be difficult for readers to learn about, given the lack of centralized international collection of such documents. The Yearbook should be widely consulted by all bioethicists, public policy analysts, lawyers and theologians.

Book Comparative Health Law and Policy

Download or read book Comparative Health Law and Policy written by Irehobhude O. Iyioha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health law and policy in Nigeria is an evolving and complex field of law, spanning a broad legal landscape and drawn from various sources. In addressing and interacting with these sources the volume advances research on health care law and policy in Nigeria and spells the beginning of what may now be formally termed the ’Nigerian health law and policy’ legal field. The collection provides a comparative analysis of relevant health policies and laws, such as reproductive and sexual health policy, organ donation and transplantation, abortion and assisted conception, with those in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and South Africa. It critically examines the duties and rights of physicians, patients, health institutions and organizations, and government parastatals against the backdrop of increased awareness of rights among patient populations. The subjects, which are discussed from a legal, ethical and policy-reform perspective, critique current legislation and policies and make suggestions for reform. The volume presents a cohesive, comparative, and comprehensive analysis of the state of health law and policy in Nigeria with those in the US, Canada, South Africa, and the UK. As such, it provides a valuable comparison between Western and Non-Western countries.

Book Health and Humanitarian Concerns

Download or read book Health and Humanitarian Concerns written by Henryk Leszek Zielinski and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founders of the Red Cross/ Red Crescent Movement proceeded from their involvement in specific experience to develop a series of Fundamental Principles. In Health and Humanitarian Concerns: Principles and Ethics, Dr. Henryk Leszek Zielinski proceeds from experience to Fundamental Principles and back again, providing health professionals with clear guidance for confronting specific problems - including natural disasters, forced feeding, torture, biomedical research and HIV and AIDS discrimination - while simultaneously presenting these medical and social dilemmas in the context of the broader humanitarian principles which underlie the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Upon reading Dr. Zielinski's book, health professionals will either change their approach to complex humanitarian solutions by following Dr. Zielinski's systematic approach, or they will maintain the same course of action but with a deeper understanding and a firmer commitment to the spirit and the letter of the Movement. In either case, Dr. Zielinski's book is an invaluable guide for all who seek to make a personal contribution to the relief of suffering in the modern world.

  • Author : Susan Gal
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2021-04-13
  • ISBN : 0691228019
  • Pages : 453 pages

Download or read book Reproducing Gender written by Susan Gal and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The striking fact that abortion was among the first issues raised, after 1989, by almost all of the newly formed governments of East Central Europe points to the significance of gender and reproduction in the postsocialist transformations. The fourteen studies in this volume result from a comparative, collaborative research project on the complex relationship between ideas and practices of gender, and political economic change. The book presents detailed evidence about women's and men's new circumstances in eight of the former communist countries, exploring the intersection of politics and the life cycle, the differential effects of economic restructuring, and women's public and political participation. Individual contributions on the former German Democratic Republic, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria provide rich empirical data and interpretive insights on postsocialist transformation analyzed from a gendered perspective. Drawing on multiple methods and disciplines, these original papers advance scholarship in several fields, including anthropology, sociology, women's studies, law, comparative political science, and regional studies. The analyses make clear that practices of gender, and ideas about the differences between men and women, have been crucial in shaping the broad social changes that have followed the collapse of communism. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Eleonora Zieliãska, Eva Maleck-Lewy, Myra Marx Ferree, Sharon Wolchik, Irene Dölling, Daphne Hahn, Sylka Scholz, Mira Marody, Anna Giza-Poleszczuk, Katalin Kovács, Mónika Váradi, Julia Szalai, Adriana Baban, MaÏgorzata Fuszara, Laura Grunberg, Zorica Mrseviâ, Krassimira Daskalova, Joanna Goven, and Jasmina Lukiâ.

Download or read book Interdisciplinary Approaches to Gene Therapy written by Stefan Müller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current therapies for most human genetic diseases are inadequate. The treatment of human disease by gene transfer has now moved from the theoretical to the practical realm. With the initiation of clinical trials involving somatic gene therapy in different countries, a critical assessment of the different aspects involved with this new technique is necessary. This volume provides an overview on all these interdisciplinary aspects by some well known experts all over the world.
