Donald Kelley views both contemporary reality and the future we face through the perspective of four different paradigms that shape our way of thinking about the world: The nation-state paradigm, built on the assumption that the traditional Westphalian nation-state remains the key building block of the present and the future, which leads us to predict the future in terms of the nature and alignment of nation-states The economic paradigm, built on the assumption that economic factors are increasingly important, which leads us to see the future in terms of factors such as interdependence, globalization, and trade as well as the growing opposition to these developments and the prioritization of national economic needs The identity and culture paradigm, built on the distinct identities and cultures of nations and regions, which leads us to view the future in terms of conflicting culture-based communities transcending formal national or economic interests The ideology paradigm, based on a post-cold war reemergence of ideological conflict within and among nations, which leads us to view a world based on ideology-based conflict From these paradigms and their interactions, Kelley builds a series of possible alternative futures of the international system. His framework provides a unique way of looking at how and why the world is changing and the many different “futures”—some peaceful and productive, some warlike and destructive, and others simply dysfunctional—in which we might live.

The FUGI (Futures of Global Interdependence) global modeling system has been developed as a policy modeling and future simulation tools of providing global information and finding out possibilities of policy co-ordinations.to achieve sustainable development of the global economy coexisting on the planet Earth in the ever changing universe. The FUGI model classified the world into 200 countries/regions where each country/regional model is global interdependent.Each national/regional model has nine subsystems as population, foods, energy, environment, economic development, peace and security, human right, healthcare and quality of life. This is a super complex dynamic system model using integrated multidisciplinary systems analysis where number of structural equations is over 170,000. Economic model as a core includes major economic variables such as production of GDP employment, expenditure of GDP, income distribution, prices, money, interest rates and financial assets, government finance, international balance of payments, international finance, foreign exchange rates and development indicators. The purpose of this e-book is twofold, namely to provide information on a new frontier of economic science: global model simulation as well as appropriate policy exercise for sustainable development of the interdependent global economy. The world economy is facing green energy revolution to change from fossil to create alternative energy and energy saving technology against sky rocketing higher oil prices. Japan not only closely involved in the Asian community but also in the global community should take a lead in the field of technology innovation. Under such circumstances, Japan should take an initiative to create a new peaceful world as a sole nation suffered from nuclear weapons during the World War II. Through not only harmonized adjustments of the Japanese policy but also wise cosmic mind to promote human solidarity with ever changing nature will be desirable to adjust orbit of fluctuated global economy. These meta-scenarios served as insights for developing four scenarios for European digital ecosystems through the workshops with high-level executives and experts. The scenarios identified the nature of EU cooperation and the development of digital infrastructure as key drivers. These four scenarios developed in the workshops are further operationalized in a specific context by exploring the implications for Estonia as well as for Chinese investments in European platforms. This exercise shows how scenarios of digital ecosystems can be used for stress-testing decisions and strategies. Decision-makers, students, scholars and other stakeholders in a wide range of industries ranging from academia to ride-sharing can use the scenarios for reframing different development trajectories and future-proofing their strategies. The scenarios can be further developed and modified for specific purposes and contexts as they are not written in stone.
