Book excerpt: International cricket is being contaminated by crooked players, ruthless gamblers and bent officials. This staggering catalogue of revelations exposes appalling scandals involving the biggest names in the sport. Often under enormous pressure from gambling gangs who threaten serious physical harm and even abduction if their orders are not carried out, many of them have frequently and deliberately cheated. These riveting revelations will shock and disgust any fan and honest player, from those in school elevens and local clubs, right up to the sportsmen who play at county and international levels. Caught Out shines the light upon the most extraordinary cricketing tales, including the tragic death of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, whose body was discovered in his hotel room; the disgraced former South African captain Hansie Cronje, who was killed in a plane crash in 2002; the terrified Pakistan wicket-keeper who was forced to seek asylum in Britain after fleeing angry bookmakers; and how slippery England literally licked the Aussies with Murray Mints to bag the Ashes. Icons are names and shamed in a wealth of disclosures that cover match fixing, spot fixing, cocaine smuggling, death threats, kidnapping, ferocious betting, and even high-class prostitutes, who are paraded as additional rewards for players who cheat at the behest of illegal bookmakers.

Book What Can International Cricket Teach Us About the Role of Luck in Labor Markets

Download or read book What Can International Cricket Teach Us About the Role of Luck in Labor Markets written by Mr.Rodney Ramcharan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How important is luck in determining labor market outcomes? We address this question using a new dataset of all international test cricketers who debuted between 1950 and 1985. We present evidence that a player’s debut performance is strongly affected by an exogenous source of variation: whether the debut series is played at home or abroad. This allows us to identify the role of luck - factors unrelated to ability - in shaping future career outcomes. We find that players lucky enough to debut at home perform significantly better on debut. Moreover, debut performance has a large and persistent impact on long run career outcomes. We also make headway in empirically distinguishing between competing explanations for why exogenous initial conditions exercise a persistent impact on career performance

  • Author : Vijay Lokapally
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2023-11-18
  • ISBN : 9356407851
  • Pages : 261 pages

Download or read book Driven written by Vijay Lokapally and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-18 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virat Kohli, the undisputed monarch of the cricket world today, is no stranger to loss. His biggest support both on and off the field-his father Prem Kohli-succumbed to a cerebral stroke when Virat was only 18 years old. In a fitting tribute that would've made his father proud, Virat returned to the field to continue an innings just a few hours after his father passed away. In Driven, Vijay Lokapally recounts happier times in the journey of Virat's rapid rise to international stardom-an account punctuated with little-known stories from fellow players, coaches, and intimates. Virat is already the recipient of countless accolades including the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri, India's highest sporting honour-Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, the title of BCCI's 'International Cricketer of the Year' as well as the ICC's 'ODI Cricketer of the Decade'. But for him, it's not about the fame or the money, or the roar of the crowds. Few know of his altruistic nature and his dedication to numerous charities for underprivileged children. What has not escaped the public eye though, is how this wizard of the willow wears his heavy mantle with such insouciant ease. In this revised and updated World Cup edition, readers can now delve deeper into Virat Kohli's cricketing journey with two new chapters, including one dedicated to his performance in the World Cups. Additionally, this edition features new images that offer a visual insight into his career, and an entertaining statistics section that provides fascinating cricketing statistics and records.
