Book The United Nations and Higher Education

Download or read book The United Nations and Higher Education written by Kevin Kester and published by IAP. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Kevin Kester details how the United Nations promotion of higher education for peace and international understanding sometimes unintentionally contributes to the reproduction of conflict and violence across diverse cultures. He shows this through an indepth examination of peace curricula, pedagogy and policy in one United Nations higher education institution, where he indicates how dominant philosophical and pedagogical models that signify acceptable peace education ultimately undermine the very goals of educational peacebuilding. Kester contends that theoretical and pedagogical training must develop beyond the dominant psycho-social, rational and state-centric assumptions that permeate the field today if higher education is to better contribute to personal and societal peacebuilding. Drawing from the fields of educational philosophy and sociology, he argues for new concepts of poststructural violence and second order reflexivity that can assist scholars in reducing conflict and building peace in lasting ways. He complements his fieldwork findings with personal reflections throughout the book to reimagine the transformative possibilities of peacebuilding education for the 21st century.

Book Defending Values Promoting Change

Download or read book Defending Values Promoting Change written by International Labour Office and published by Geneva : ILO. This book was released on 1994 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 1994 International Labor Conference, convened in Geneva in the 75th anniversary year of the International labor organization (ILO), was a watershed. As the "world labor parliament" met in June, the community of nations faced what many within the organization consider the worst employment crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930's. Shortly before assembly opened, the ILO reported that nearly one-third of the global work force - 820 million people - were either unemployed or underemployed. With that somber jobs picture and the impact of swift economic globalization as a backdrop, a record 2,000 delegates - representing workers, employers, and governments from 158 of the ILO's 171 member nations - weighed and acted on a variety of issues influenced by seismic economic, social, and political change rocking the world."

Book Social Justice Global Dynamics

Download or read book Social Justice Global Dynamics written by Ayelet Banai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many theoretical publications make assumptions about the facts of globalization, and in particular about the role and autonomy of the nation state. These factual claims and assumptions often play an important role in justifying the normative conclusions, yet remain under-explored. This interdisciplinary volume examines questions that are central to the problems of both social and international justice, and in particular, to their interdependence: How do global and transnational factors influence the capacity of states to be internally just? Has the state lost its capacity for autonomous action in the global economy, and thus its ethical significance for theories of justice? If so, which institutional reforms could address this problem? What is the role of the state in a just international order? The authors address important connections between domestic social justice and global dynamics, by identifying problematic practices and trends in the current global order. They examine political, economic and legal changes and offer normative views on concrete policies and institutions that are particularly important and/or problematic – i.e. international health policies, the World Bank, taxation policies and the World Trade Organization. Focusing on the relationship between social and global justice and establishing connections between political theory and empirical research, this book is vital reading for students and scholars of Politics, International Relations, and Development Studies.

Book Justice and Peace

Download or read book Justice and Peace written by Caroline Fehl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the justice concerns of political actors in important international regimes and international and domestic conflicts and traces their effects on peace and conflict. The book demonstrates that such justice concerns play an ambivalent role for the resolution of conflicts and maintenance of order. While arrangements that actors perceive as just will provide a good basis for peaceful relations, the pursuit of justice can create conflicts or make existing ones more difficult to resolve. The Chapter "Justice from an Interdisciplinary Perspective: The Impact of the Revolution in Human Sciences on Peace Research and International Relations" by Harald Müller is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com.

Book Cooperation and Social Justice

Download or read book Cooperation and Social Justice written by Joseph Heath and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In six new essays, philosopher and award-winning author Joseph Heath explores the connection between principles of justice and the institutional arrangements required to achieve them. Topics include the significance of status inequality, the question of open borders and immigration, the stigmatization of self-control failure, and debates over racial inequality in the United States. Ultimately, Cooperation and Social Justice reveals that one cannot think about questions of social justice without also taking seriously the institutional arrangements through which they may or may not be realized.
