The main highlights include the latest developments in the study of the behaviour, transport and distribution of isotopes in the aquatic environment, recent climate change records using isotopic tracers in the environment, global isotopic oceanic studies, new trends in radioecological investigations and modelling, impact of groundwater-seawater interactions on coastal zones, groundwater dynamics and modelling, important for management of freshwater resources, development of new isotopic techniques, such as AMS, RIMS and ICPMS, and their applications in environmental studies, new trends in radiometrics underground techniques, new in situ radiometrics technologies and many other exciting topics which were presented and discussed during the Conference. The proceedings constitute an important contribution to the environmental isotopic research. In publishing this book the aim is to make the use of isotopes more widespread in the environmental disciplines and to further stimulate work in this exciting field. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium on Isotope Techniques in the Study of Past and Current Environmental Changes in the Hydrosphere and the Atmosphere, Vienna, 14-18 April 1997. The symposium was structured in five sessions of oral presentations, a poster session and a round table discussion that focused on trends and future requirements in isotope hydrology and on applications in climate and environmental research. The major themes covered by the presentations included the use of isotopic tracers in studies of atmospheric and hydrospheric changes and of human impacts on water and the environment. Special emphasis was placed on isotopic archives of climatic and environmental change. Some contributions addressed new technical approaches.

Book Isotope Techniques in the Study of Past and Current Environmental Changes in the Hydrosphere and the Atmosphere

Download or read book Isotope Techniques in the Study of Past and Current Environmental Changes in the Hydrosphere and the Atmosphere written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium, Vienna, 19-23 April 1993. Natural isotopes are among the most powerful tools for investigating past and current environmental changes. In particular, stable isotopes have proved to be very useful proxy indicators of climate related parameters such as surface air temperature, relative humidity of the atmosphere and amount of precipitation, whereas radioactive isotopes are widely used as a dating tool. The release of radionuclides during nuclear bomb tests permitted studies of the dynamics of transport and mixing processes in the atmosphere. It also allowed a global tracer experiment on the hydrological and carbon cycles, which substantially contributed to better understanding of these two vital compartments of the global ecosystem. A wide spectrum of themes was discussed at the symposium, covering both the 'present' and the 'past' of the global atmosphere/hydrosphere system. Case studies as well as methodological aspects of various isotope techniques applied in both areas of research were presented.

  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Isotope Hydrology written by Joel R. Gat and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the discipline of environmental sciences, the stable-isotope methodology is being increasingly used, especially in the study of the water cycle and of paleo-climatology. This book reviews the natural variability of stable isotopes in the hydrosphere, describing the physico-chemical basis of isotope fractionalism, and applying this knowledge to natural waters as they move through the hydrologic cycle from the ocean to the atmosphere, the biosphere and the lithosphere. It focuses on the processes at the surface-atmosphere and land-biosphere-atmosphere interfaces, since these are the sites of major changes in isotope composition. In response to the increasing awareness of our changing climate, a discussion on the global view of the changing water cycle, in the past and future, concludes up the presentation.

Book Stable Isotope Techniques in the Study of Biological Processes and Functioning of Ecosystems

Download or read book Stable Isotope Techniques in the Study of Biological Processes and Functioning of Ecosystems written by M.J. Unkovich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades technological advances in isotope ratio mass spectrometry have been very rapid, opening up new possibilities for analysis of biological and environmental materials. The new instrumentation has facilitated faster analysis of samples via automated sample preparation and multi-isotope analysis of single samples, resulting in considerable cost savings, and enabling access to isotope analysis for many more researchers. These changes are reflected in the rapidly growing international literature on stable isotopes. While there have been some excellent books and review papers aimed at interpreting isotope signals in biology and environmental science, there have been fewer attempts to provide practical tools for researchers making forays into this exciting new arena. This book aims to address this inadequacy by providing a set of practical guidelines for the application of a range of novel and well proven stable isotope techniques to the fields of plant physiological ecology, agriculture, marine ecology and palaeoecology. The book is the outcome of a weeklong workshop held under the auspices of the Cooperative Research Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA 1992 - 2000) at The University of Western Australia and the CSIRO Floreat Laboratories, Perth, Western Australia, in February 1999. The workshop was designed to provide practical tools and experiences for researchers and students concerned with how one goes about using stable isotopes in field investigations.

Book Rainfall Observations and Modelling

Download or read book Rainfall Observations and Modelling written by Lakshmi Kumar TV and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-06-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides chapters with subjects ranging from the basic understanding of rainfall variability to the impact of climate change with novel methodologies and concepts. This book is mainly intended for post-graduate doctoral students and early career researchers for their use in academic and research programs. This book compiles the chapters with different data sets that are publicly available and from site-based measurements along with the data generation methods and modeling aspects. Rainfall plays an important role; its deficiency leads to meteorological droughts and further impacts hydrological, agricultural, and socioeconomic droughts, and its surplus causes floods over urban areas. With the advancement of technology, it is possible to determine future rainfall accurately by collating the data from observations, radar, and satellite and model simulations. The current book is of immense help in evaluating and understanding the atmospheric processes governed by the various physical laws, and the results of the chapters provide deep insight for a better understanding of rainfall phenomena across the different regions of the world.
