Download or read book Warning Design written by John Edworthy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-03-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why don't we always obey warnings? In discussing a wide range of issues in behavioural research of warnings, this book takes the view that a warning is but one piece of information which we take into account in deciding what - or what not - to do. This view leads the authors to the positions that warnings should be matched in their urgency to the urgency of the situation they warn about. Auditory, visual, written and symbolic warnings are discussed in detail.

Download or read book The Human Factors of Transport Signs written by Candida Castro and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-04-14 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ubiquitous nature of transport signs on roadways, railways, and in airports can lead to an overload of visual information, yet little research has been done to understand the design and use of such signs from a driver‘s perspective. The Human Factors of Transport Signs explores key transport sign research and examines new technologies that are revolutionizing signaling. While concentrating largely on the road environment and general signing issues, the authors also address specific railway and other transport modality topics. International contributors discuss driver psychology and interaction with transport signs as well as the strengths and weaknesses of different types of signs.

Download or read book Field and Laboratory Studies of Warning Symbol Sign Legibility Distance written by Frances A. Greene and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a group of old and young drivers, six symbol signs were investigated in both laboratory and field settings. With six trials per sign, legibility distances, defined as the distance at which the sign is correctly identified from a menu, were collected. Two major findings emerged: first is the successful development of a new laboratory simulation technique for the investigation of legibility distances. Correlations coefficients between laboratory and field legibility distances were computed and appear very promising. Large within subject variability was discovered in both age groups' data of legibility distances, both in the laboratory and field trials. This variability led to alternative ways of defining the dependent variable equivalent to designs of past studies examining legibility distances of the same signs.
