Bureaucratic Fanatics shows how this ever more contentious question in contemporary politics belongs to the political-theological underpinnings of bureaucratization itself. At the end of the 18th century, a new and paradoxical kind of fanaticism emerged - rational fanaticism - that propelled the intensive biopolitical management of everyday life in Europe and North America as well as the extensive colonial exploitation of the earth and its peoples. These excesses of bureaucratization incited in turn increasingly fanatical forms of resistance. And they inspired literary production that provocatively presented the outrageous contours of rationalization. Combining political theory with readings of Kleist, Melville, Conrad, and Kafka, this genealogy of bureaucratic fanaticism relates two extreme figures: fanatical bureaucrats driven to the ends of the earth and to the limits of humanity by the rationality of the apparatuses they serve; and peculiar fanatics who passionately, albeit seemingly passively, resist the encroachments of bureaucratization.

Early Astronomers Royal gathered astronomical data with the purpose of enabling navigators to compute their longitude at sea. Nevil Maskelyne in the 18th century organised the work of computing tables for the Nautical Almanac, anticipating later methods used in safety-critical computing systems. The 19th century saw influential critiques of Charles Babbage’s mechanical calculating engines, and in the 20th century Leslie Comrie and others pioneered the automation of computation. The arrival of the Royal Naval College in 1873 and the University of Greenwich in 1999 has brought more mathematicians and different kinds of mathematics to Greenwich. In the 21st century computational mathematics has found many new applications. This book presents an account of the mathematicians who worked at Greenwich and their achievements. The symposium also commemorated the 150th anniversary of the founding of Pulkovo Observatory. The scientific program was presented in ten half-day sessions. Most sessions were held at the Pulkovskaya Hotel, but one session which highlighted Pulkovo's current programs was held at Pulkovo Observatory. The sessions were organized into general categories pertaining to the legacy of Pulkovo for inertial systems; current programs at Pulkovo Observatory; concepts, definitions and models; and the realization and comparision of reference frames. More than 140 scientific papers were presented, either orally or in poster form. Extensive use was made of electronic mail and computer-readable communications, and more than two-thirds of the authors made use of the opportunity to submit papers for formatting by the editors. The meeting was truly a symposium in the Greek sense of the word-a free-flowing exchange of ideas and opinions. The final two papers presented at the symposium by Wilkins and by Westerhout are presented at an eady stage in the published proceedings, in order to help focus the reader's attention on the concepts and problems explored in subsequent papers.
