Book International Comparison of Interest Rate Guarantees in Life Insurance Contracts

Download or read book International Comparison of Interest Rate Guarantees in Life Insurance Contracts written by J David Cummins and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minimum interest rate guarantees are included in life insurance products in most countries, but the exact implementations of the guarantees vary significantly across countries. In this paper we develop models of interest rate guarantees in Denmark, Germany, Norway, the U.K., and the U.S. by constructing contracts designed to capture practices in each country. The European contracts include rather sophisticated investment surplus distribution mechanisms, whereas the U.S. contracts are simpler and do not involve an explicit bonus account. The models are compared empirically using simulation analysis. For low volatilities, the payoffs from the Danish, German and U.K. contracts are surprisingly similar to the payoff from the market index. However, for higher levels of volatility the contracts noticeably truncate the lower tail of the index return distribution. The U.S. and Norwegian contracts offer the lowest risk of all contracts but also have the lowest expected returns. Thus, investors in life insurance products encounter significantly different risk-return profiles depending on country of origin.

Book Innovations in Quantitative Risk Management

Download or read book Innovations in Quantitative Risk Management written by Kathrin Glau and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative models are omnipresent –but often controversially discussed– in todays risk management practice. New regulations, innovative financial products, and advances in valuation techniques provide a continuous flow of challenging problems for financial engineers and risk managers alike. Designing a sound stochastic model requires finding a careful balance between parsimonious model assumptions, mathematical viability, and interpretability of the output. Moreover, data requirements and the end-user training are to be considered as well. The KPMG Center of Excellence in Risk Management conference Risk Management Reloaded and this proceedings volume contribute to bridging the gap between academia –providing methodological advances– and practice –having a firm understanding of the economic conditions in which a given model is used. Discussed fields of application range from asset management, credit risk, and energy to risk management issues in insurance. Methodologically, dependence modeling, multiple-curve interest rate-models, and model risk are addressed. Finally, regulatory developments and possible limits of mathematical modeling are discussed.

Book Life Annuity Products and Their Guarantees

Download or read book Life Annuity Products and Their Guarantees written by Collectif and published by OECD. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication helps policy makers to better understand annuity products and the guarantees they provide in order to optimise the role that these products can play in financing retirement. Increasingly complex products, however, pose additional challenges concerning consumer protection. Consumers need to be aware of their options and have access to unbiased and comprehensible advice and information about these products.

Book The Fair Value of Insurance Liabilities

Download or read book The Fair Value of Insurance Liabilities written by Irwin T. Vanderhoof and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores theoretical and practical implications of reflecting the fair value of liabilities for insurance companies. In addition, the contributions discuss the disclosure of these values to the financial and regulatory communities and auditing firms which are actually calculating this illusive but important variable. It combines contributions by distinguished practitioners from the insurance, accounting and finance fields, with those of prominent academics. One of the central themes of the collection is that adequate disclosure of the true economic value of insurance company liabilities is both possible and desirable. Wherever possible, the insurance valuation process is wedded with modern financial theory. For example, the use of option pricing theory is applied to insurance companies, where the true value of the firm's liabilities is a critical variable. Methods such as cash flow, earned profit and indirect discount are explored.

Book Insurance and Issues in Financial Soundness

Download or read book Insurance and Issues in Financial Soundness written by Nigel Davies and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores insurance as a source of financial system vulnerability. It provides a brief overview of the insurance industry and reviews the risks it faces, as well as several recent failures of insurance companies that had systemic implications. Assimilation of banking-type activities by life insurers appears to be the key systemic vulnerability. Building on this experience and the experience gained under the FSAP, the paper proposes key indicators that should be compiled and used for surveillance of financial soundness of insurance companies and the insurance sector as a whole.

Book Global Financial Stability Report April 2016

Download or read book Global Financial Stability Report April 2016 written by International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current Global Financial Stability Report (April 2016) finds that global financial stability risks have risen since the last report in October 2015. The new report finds that the outlook has deteriorated in advanced economies because of heightened uncertainty and setbacks to growth and confidence, while declines in oil and commodity prices and slower growth have kept risks elevated in emerging markets. These developments have tightened financial conditions, reduced risk appetite, raised credit risks, and stymied balance sheet repair. A broad-based policy response is needed to secure financial stability. Advanced economies must deal with crisis legacy issues, emerging markets need to bolster their resilience to global headwinds, and the resilience of market liquidity should be enhanced. The report also examines financial spillovers from emerging market economies and finds that they have risen substantially. This implies that when assessing macro-financial conditions, policymakers may need to increasingly take into account economic developments in emerging market economies. Finally, the report assesses changes in the systemic importance of insurers, finding that across advanced economies the contribution of life insurers to systemic risk has increased in recent years. The results suggest that supervisors and regulators should take a more macroprudential approach to the sector.
