Book National Sovereignity and International Organizations

Download or read book National Sovereignity and International Organizations written by Magdalena M. Martín Martínez and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1996-02-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the question of national sovereignty and States' participation in International Organizations, whether traditional or supranational ones. Although there has been much discussion on the problems posed by the transference of sovereignty, this volume provides an original insight in that transfer of state sovereignty is approached as a dynamic process that can be divided into three different phases. Part one, called 'the initial phase', focuses on the examination of the domestic legal basis for the transfer of state sovereignty. Part two, 'the transfer phase', investigates how the process of transfer evolves within the core of two International Organizations: the United Nations and the European Communities. Part three, 'the post-transfer phase', analyses the States' responses to the effects and consequences of the transfer of sovereignty.

Book excerpt: The simple yet challenging goal of this book is to deliberate the legitimacy, andadvance the feasibility, of an important new concept —the notion of "globalcivics." We cannot achieve the international cooperation that is needed for aglobalizing and interdependent century without embracing and implementingthis important concept. The first section of Global Civics is a presentation of the overall idea itself; thesecond section consists of diverse assessments from around the world of theconcept and where it currently stands. The third section discusses various optionsfor a global civics curriculum. Praise for the Global Civics Program "I agree with Hakan Altinay that in order to navigate our global interdependence,we need processes where we all think through our own responsibilities towardother fellow humans and discuss our answers with our peers. A conversationabout a global civics is indeed needed, and university campuses are ideal venuesfor these conversations to start. We should enter this conversation with an openmind, and not insist on any particular point of view. The process is the key, andwe should not wait any longer to start it." —Martti Ahtisaari, 2008 Nobel Peace Laureate "The growing interconnectivity among people across the world is nurturing therealization that we are all part of a global community. This sense of interdependence, commitment to shared universal values, and solidarity among peoples across theworld can be channeled to build enlightened and democratic global governancein the interests of all. I hope that universities and think tanks around the worldwill deploy their significant reservoirs of knowledge and creativity to developplatforms to enable students to study and debate these issues. This project is acontribution toward that goal and I look forward to following it closely." — Kofi Annan, Former Secretary General of the United Nations, 2001 Nobel Peace Laureate

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contends that civil society must mobilize its capacities to bring a new will to national and international politics and oblige governments to act. It starts by demonstrating the need for institutional change at the UN and then shows how, both in the past and the present, leading individuals and nongovernmental organizations, using their knowledge base and their organizational networks, have lead the fight for international organizations. After a summary of major UN reform proposals over the years, the book concludes by identifying leading global ""reformers"" and elaborating a detailed plan for a global reform movement to spearhead the modernization of the UN system.

Book The Rise of Global Civil Society

Download or read book The Rise of Global Civil Society written by Don E. Eberly and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global news is generally bad news. On the surface, the story is about war, poverty, ethnic and sectarian strife. Democracy movements advanced by the U.S. government seem to be stalled or even reversed. Yet just below the surface, more hopeful trends are brewing. A new global awareness of the people at "the bottom of the pyramid" is summoning forth an unprecedented response to human need and suffering. It involves a shift from vertical to horizontal power that official aid agencies are only beginning to comprehend. Whereas twenty-five years ago, government aid accounted for 70 percent of all American outflows, today 85 percent of all outflows of resources come from private individuals, businesses, religious congregations, universities, and immigrant communities. If aid policy in the twentieth century relied on top-down bureaucracy dominated by policy specialists and elites, the twenty-first century is shaping up as an era in which citizens, social entrepreneurs, and volunteers link up to solve problems. U.S. military and economic power are basic components of America's presence in the world; but in an environment of rampant anti-Americanism, it is compassion that is America's most consequential export. Civil society, once the distinctive characteristic of American democracy, is now advancing across the globe, carrying with it new forms of philanthropy, citizenship, and volunteerism. Tens of thousands of voluntary associations are prying open closed societies from within, solving problems in new ways, and forming the seedbed for a long-term cultivation of democratic norms. Building Nations from the Bottom Up: The Global Rise of Democratic Society presents a sweeping overview of the forces now shaping the global debate, including citizen-led development projects, poverty-reduction strategies that substitute opportunity for charity, and electronically linked movements to combat corruption and autocratic rule.

Download or read book Civic Engagement Community Based Initiatives and Governance Capacity written by Jurian Edelenbos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to theoretically conceptualize and empirically investigate upcoming and established practices of community-based initiatives in various countries in which both citizens and governments join efforts and capacities to solve wicked issues. It aims to include and compare cases from various countries, departing from the notion that community-based initiatives take place in an institutional context of governmental structures, rules, procedures, regulations, and routines. This book joins excellent researchers from renowned universities all over the world, aiming for a balance between upcoming scholars and renowned scholars in the field of community-based initiatives and governance capacity. Contributors were carefully selected on the basis of their experience in the field of community-based initiatives, citizens' engagement and governance capacity approaches.
