Book U S Army Intelligence in Germany 1944 1949

Download or read book U S Army Intelligence in Germany 1944 1949 written by Thomas Boghardt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive archival research in six countries and intensive fieldwork, the book analyzes the history of the village of Nkholongue on the eastern (Mozambican) shores of Lake Malawi from the time of its formation in the 19th century to the present day. The study uses Nkholongue as a microhistorical lens to examine such diverse topics as the slave trade, the spread of Islam, colonization, subsistence production, counter-insurgency, decolonization, civil war, ecotourism, and matriliny. Thereby, the book attempts to reflect as much as possible on the generalizability and (global) comparability of local findings by framing analyses in historiographical discussions that aim to go beyond the regional or national level. Although the chapters of the book deal with very different topics, they are united by a common interest in the social history of rural Africa in the longue durée. Contrary to persistent clichés of rural inertia in Africa, the book as a whole underscores the profound changeability of social conditions and relations in Nkholongue over the years and highlights how people’s room for maneuver kept changing as a result of the Winds of History, the frequent and often violent ruptures brought to the village from outside.

Book The Challenge of Nation Building

Download or read book The Challenge of Nation Building written by Rebecca Patterson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, the United States Army has often been involved in missions other than conventional warfare. These include low-intensity conflicts, counterinsurgency operations, and nation-building efforts. Although non-conventional warfare represents the majority of missions executed in the past sixty years, the Army still primarily plans, organizes, and trains to fight conventional ground wars. Consequently, in the last ten years, there has been considerable criticism regarding the military’s inability to accomplish tasks other than conventional war. Failed states and the threat they represent cannot be ignored or solved with conventional military might. In order to adapt to this new reality, the U.S. Army must innovate. This text examines the conditions that have allowed or prevented the U.S. Army to innovate for nation-building effectively. By doing so, it shows how military leadership and civil-military relations have changed. Nation-building refers to a type of military occupation where the goal is regime change or survival, a large number of ground troops are deployed, and both military and civilian personnel are used in the political administration of an occupied country, with the goals of establishing a productive economy and a stable government. Such tasks have always been a challenge for the U.S. military, which is not normally equipped or trained to undertake them. Using military effectiveness as the measurement of innovative success, the book analyzes several U.S. nation-building cases, including post World War II Germany, South Korea from 1945-1950, the Vietnam War, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. By doing so, it reveals the conditions that enabled military innovation in one unique case (Germany) while explaining what prevented it in the others. This variation of effectiveness leads to examine prevailing military innovation theories, threat-based accounts, quality of military organizations, and civil-military relations. This text comes at a critical time as the U.S. military faces dwindling resources and tough choices about its force structure and mission orientation. It will add to the growing debate about the role of civilians, military reformers, and institutional factors in military innovation and effectiveness.

Book The Refugee in the Post War World

Download or read book The Refugee in the Post War World written by Jacques Vernant and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1953, The Refugee in the Post-War World presents a comprehensive survey on the global refugee situation after the Second World War. Chapter I and II of Part I attempt a definition of what is meant by a refugee and states the problems to which the refugees give rise for the receiving countries and the international community; chapter III contains a brief account of the work of the international bodies concerned with refugees from the First World War onwards; and chapter IV tells the story of the various ethnic and national groups of refugees after the Second World War. The other parts give an analysis of the refugees’ situation in the different countries. The latter are classified in two ways: according to their place on the map and to their capacity to absorb refugees. Each chapter describing the refugee position in a particular country is divided further into three sections: an introduction intended to afford a bird's eye view of the general refugee problem in that country; a second section setting forth the main legislative provisions applicable to aliens and, more specially to refugees; and the third which gives an account of the refugees’ economic and social conditions. This is an important historical reference work for scholars and researchers of refugee studies, international relations, political studies, and immigration studies.

Book The Young Victims of the Nazi Regime

Download or read book The Young Victims of the Nazi Regime written by Simone Gigliotti and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Nazi regime many children and young people in Europe found their lives uprooted by Nazi policies, resulting in their relocation around the globe. The Young Victims of the Nazi Regime represents the diversity of their experiences, covering a range of non-European perspectives on the Second World War and aspects of memory. This book is unique in that it places the experiences of children and youth in a transnational context, shifting the conversation of displacement and refuge to countries that have remained under-examined in a comparative context. Featuring essays from an international range of experts, this book analyses the key themes in three sections: the migration of children to countries including England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, and Brazil; the experiences of young people who remained in Nazi Europe and became victims of war, displacement and deportation; and finally the challenges of rebuilding lives and representing traumas in the aftermath of war. In its comparisons between Jewish and non-Jewish experiences and how these intersected and diverged, it revisits debates about cultural genocide through the separation of families and communities, as well as contributing new perspectives on forced labour, families and the Holocaust, and Germans as war victims.
