Also discussed are the guidelines and procedures for heating the cured concrete surface in order to melt the beads. Specifications for the wax beads, their shipment and storage, mix design, water cement ratio, finishing techniques an heat treatment are given, along with several testing procedures related specifically to wax beaded concrete.Steel rebar corrosion, caused by deicing salts or ocean spray, is considered the major cause of early deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge decks. Preventing chloride intrusion into the concrete has been widely studied as a means of eliminating the problem. One promising solution is set forth in this manual. It outlines and discusses step-by-step the use of wax beads to internally seal concrete and prevent the intrusion of the chloride ion.

Book excerpt: The work described herein was aimed at developing the information and processes necessary for efficient experimental construction of bridge decks using internally sealed concrete. This concrete is sealed by means of wax included in the mix, and was developed for use in bridge decks to prevent the penetration of water and chlorides to the reinforcing steel. Specific goals of the study were: (1) The development of safest, efficient field heating systems needed to melt the wax and seal the concrete. (2) The definition of the engineering properties of the particular internally sealed concrete specified for the experimental projects. During the early testing phases, concrete cracking problems were encountered and circumvented by modifying the heating and bead-manufacturing processes. Heating equipment experiments performed to develop both small, single pass, fast-heating equipment and equipment which slowly heats a large area at once are described.
