Book The City in Time and Space

Download or read book The City in Time and Space written by Aidan Southall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book treats urbanisation and urbanism all over the world, and from the earliest times to the present. Aidan Southall, a pioneer in the study of African cities, discusses the urban centres of ancient Sumeria, Greece and Rome, as well as medieval European cities, Chinese, Japanese, Islamic and Indic cities, colonial cities, and the great metropolises of the twentieth century. Drawing on this historical and comparative perspective, he offers a fresh analysis of world urbanisation in the contemporary period of globalisation. The study emphasises the enduring paradox of the city, which juxtaposes splendid cultural productions with the poverty and deprivation of the majority.

Parts I and II, Scope and Impact of Diabetes, look at the economic impact and complications of morbidity and mortality and consider the major fatal problems associated with diabetes (micro- and macrovascular diseases, neuropathy, and ketoacidosis or coma). Recommendations are offered to improve understanding of the disease; for promotion of long-term preventative measures; and for compilation of statistics. Part III, Etiology and Pathology of Diabetes, includes discussions from 9 workshops on diabetic problems of: neuropathy; obesity; retinopathy; genetics, viruses and animal models; islet transplantation and mechanical insulin devices; insulin production and metabolic effects; micro- and macroaginopathy; and dental and perinatal problems. The book deals with both the contemporary issues outlined above and the situation in which they emerge: industrial restructuring, planning, women’s issues, social and cultural practices and the landscape as context for social action.

Book Migrants and Markets

Download or read book Migrants and Markets written by Holger Kolb and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of their interaction, economics and migration research have treated each other with mutual indifference. When migration research attempted to overstretch its bounds, economics reduced its analytical scope to those areas that originally seemed to belong to the genuine economic sphere. This volume considers eleven case studies that aim to overcome the artificial barrier between the two disciplines by applying the economic method to migratory phenomena, utilizing economic theories in order to explain migratory patterns, and regarding the structure and development of markets as crucial to the shaping of population stocks and the flow of migrants.

Book All Roads Lead to the American City

Download or read book All Roads Lead to the American City written by Peter Swirski and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Roads Lead to the American City provides an original view of the urban culture in America seen through its irrevocable ties with the cities and roads. Examining the history, cinema, literature, cultural myths and social geography of the United States, the book puts some of the greatest as well as the "baddest" American cities under the microscope. Taking the role of the roads that crisscross and connect the cities as their shared point of reference, these essays explore ways to understand the people who live, commute, work, create, govern, commit crime and conduct business in them.Cities, for the most part, are America. Their values and problems define not only what the United States is, but what other nations perceive the United States to be. Roads and transportation, on the other hand, and their impact on the American culture and lifestyle, form not only the integral part of the historical rise-and-shine of the modern city, but a physical release from and a cultural antidote to its pressure-cooker stresses. Tracing the boundless variety and complexity of these twin themes, All Roads Lead to the American City is built around an interlinked series of essays on the urban culture in America. Juxtaposing the city and the road, it looks alternatively at cities as historical, geographical, social and cultural centres of life in the land, and at roads as physical as well as metaphorical arteries that lead in and out of the city.
