This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Internal Secretions and the Principles of Medicine, Vol. 1 The pancreas and spleen may be considered jointly, since, as long ago asserted by Schiff, the secretions of these two organs unite in the formation of a powerful proteolytic ferment, a process subsequently defined by Herzen as the one leading to the conversion of trypsinogen into trypsin: the albumin-solving constituent of the pancreatic juice. While confirming this view, our own analysis led to the conclusion that, in addition to the trypsin supplied to the intestinal canal, a portion of this ferment passed into the splenic vein as an internal secretion and thence into the portal vein. We also ascertained that this fer ment played a leading part in all immunizing processes, its main function in the blood-stream being to destroy toxic albuminoids. These, as is well known, include all toxins and diastases secreted by bacteria, proteids, toxalbumins, vegetable poisons, and venoms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organs of Internal Secretion, Their Diseases and Therapeutic Application: A Book for General Practitioners The place which those glands possessing internal secretions now occupy in the practice of medicine cannot be over-estimated. Although it is only in recent years that their importance has been under stood, every day brings to our knowledge fresh evidence of their vital influences upon the general bodily and mental health. When it was discovered that ex Ophthalmic goitre owed its existence to an over-action, associated with hypersecretion, of the thyroid gland, the first milestone had been passed in the path which led us to the discovery of the important part which the hormones play in our lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Internal Secretions in Practical Medicine AS our knowledge of physiology becomes more intimate and our application of some of the ideas set forth by the experimentalists are put into prac tice, we find the scope of medical practice broad ening in a remarkable manner. Revolution follows revolution until the standardized procedures of to day differ as radically from those of, say, 25 years ago as do the present conceptions of the physio logic relations of the various parts of the body com pared with those held at that time.
