Book The linkages between migration agriculture food security and rural development

Download or read book The linkages between migration agriculture food security and rural development written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration has contributed to the society we live in today, and as such, it is part of our shared history. Both the causes and the consequences are multifaceted and complicated. While many people leave their homes as a result of conflict or poverty, others move under conditions of peace, political stability and development. A large share of international migrants originated from rural areas. This is an important part of the structural transformation of an economy, and is an important part of the structural transformation of an economy. Examining the complex interlinkages of migration with agriculture, This report examines the existing literature and provides evidence from both developed and developing countries, focusing on why people from rural areas decide to migrate. It explores the drivers of migration, both international and internal, and aims to deepen our understanding of the interlinkages with agriculture, food security and rural development. This report assesses the impact of migration on countries of origin and destination, focusing on rural areas and the agricultural sector. It discusses how agricultural and social policies can address challenges and capitalize on opportunities created by migration trends.

Book Internal Migration and Development

Download or read book Internal Migration and Development written by Priya Deshingkar and published by UN. This book was released on 2005 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report argues that internal migration can play an important role in poverty reduction and economic development; internal migration should therefore not be controlled or actively discouraged. Policy should instead concern itself with ways of maximizing the potential benefits of migration to the individual concerned and society at large. While there have been few formal efforts to estimate the economic contribution of migrant labour, it is evident that many developing countries would probably not have had the roads, buildings, manufacturing and trade centres that they have today had it not been for migration.

Book Economic development and the evolution of internal migration Moving in steps returnees and gender differences

Download or read book Economic development and the evolution of internal migration Moving in steps returnees and gender differences written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper sheds new light on internal migration processes by estimating migration flows for 31 countries, focusing on step migration and on return migration back to rural areas from urban areas. The approach is to estimate the shares of the population (by gender) that move or stay in rural and urban areas over three periods (childhood and two forward periods). Using data from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), the estimation was done with an information-theoretic procedure using maximum-entropy econometrics to estimate migration frequencies by population groups. Sizeable urban to rural migration flows are found, with rural returnees often contributing substantially to urban-to-rural flows. This phenomenon is more pronounced in countries in relatively early phases of development, and among male migrants. The analysis also confirms anecdotal evidence that migrants move in several steps and that internal migration patterns vary considerably according to gender; however, in countries that are further along the path of structural transformation, and particularly urbanization, the magnitude of migration flows appears to be similar across genders.

Book Kinship Networks and International Migration in Nigeria

Download or read book Kinship Networks and International Migration in Nigeria written by A.O. Olutayo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a detailed, comprehensive and insightful account of Nigerians’ international migration trajectories, drivers, processes and dynamics. The book is inspired by the orientation and conviction that, as developing nations, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the world struggle with pathways to development, the time has come to consistently factor in international migration so as to sustainably annex the gains and mitigate loss within the framework of Migration for Development (M4D). However, before migration can drive development, emigration and return forces must be sufficiently understood, especially with regards to the interface of kinship networks which punctuate and strongly influence behavioural characteristics and social relations of Africans. The book was written with strong sociological and anthropological elements and with important academic and pragmatic development orientations. It realistically engages with recent discourses and debates in migration and diaspora studies, kinship, return migration, remittances and migration for development policies and practices. The book is of both theoretical and practical importance, establishing a useful interface among theoretical, empirical and pragmatic issues with relevance not only for the largely ‘sending’ developing nations, but also for the ‘receiving’ developed nations of Europe, America and a few emerging economies of Asia. This book will be very useful as teaching, research and policy material.
