Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Internal Medicine, 1920, Vol. 26 Depending on the age Of the animals used in this second group of experiments, the animals may be divided into two classes, those animals which show a partial recovery from the acute renal injury and by the processes of repair in the kidney develop a chronic type of nephropathy, and those animals which are unable to further the processes Of repair so that a chronic type of renal injury can be produced and so enable the animal to recover partially. The Old animals Of the group fall in this latter class, which fail to recover. We have been unable to Obtain such recovery experiments in animals more than 2 years Of age. The younger animals Of the group have shown various degrees of recovery. During the course Of the uranium intoxication in these animals, the experiments have been terminated at various periods in order to observe the pathologic changes in the kidney at various stages in the functional recovery Of the organ from the acute nephropathy. The earliest period for the termination of an experiment has been on the tenth day. The longest period for the duration Of an experiment has been ninety-one days. For the sake of reducing the length Of the tables in recording the course of these experiments, Observations have only been recorded on every other day or in some instances on every fifth day Of the experiment. Routine examinations were made, how ever, everyday for the duration Of the intoxication. In order to demonstrate the influence of the age of the animal on the course of the recovery three experiments have been selected from animals of different age periods. Experiment 24, Group 2, Table 5 was carried out in an animal 4 years and 2 months Old. Experiment 31. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Internal Medicine, 1920, Vol. 25 The manner in which this abnormal type Of breathing produces the anoxemia has also received considerable attention from them. Keith has demonstrated that the lungs do not expand after the manner Of the bladder when external pressure is reduced, but like a Japanese fan. He has also pointed out that expansion Of the lungs does not take place constantly and uniformly throughout. Therefore this type of breathing would Of necessity exaggerate the uneven distribution of air to the alveoli. They also found that the expired air and the alveolar air in cases exhibiting this type of respiration contained a large percentage of Oxygen, which rendered it difficult to reconcile this condition with a pronounced anoxemia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Archives of Internal Medicine, Vol. 1: January 15, 1908 This refractory period may be shortened, as is the case in paroxysmal tachycardia, or it may be of longer duration when' the irritability of the heart muscle is impaired by pathologic processes. Every part of the heart is irritable, and every part answers to the normal stimulus with its own rhythm, but the irritability is developed in the highest degree in the venous part of the right auriele, and this most easily excitable part, whose own pulsations are more frequent than those of the ventricles, takes the lead of the other parts and determines the rate of their pulsations. So the venous part of the auriele forces its rhythm on the other parts of the auricles and on the ventricles with which it is connected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Archives of Internal Medicine, Vol. 1: July 15, 1908 In selecting the discussion of the nature of clinical shock as the subject of my present address, it is chie y my intention to record some experimental facts which we Obtained in the course of various series of investigations and which may have some bearing on the interpretation of clinical shock. As an introduction to this report, however, it will be necessary to dwell brie y on the clinical facts of our syndrome and also to review brie y the theories as to the nature of shock now in vogue and the experimental facts on which they are based. As to the clinical picture of shock I could not do better than to quote the description of a concrete case of shock as lucidly given by Fischer1 nearly forty years ago.
