Book excerpt: Dwarf Spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are the nearest and the most dark matter dominated galaxies in the Universe. In this thesis, we study their kinematics and dynamics using Monte Carlo methods. First, we study the kinematics of stellar subpopulations in dwarf spheroidal galaxies and present a robust Monte Carlo based method for interpretation of the sub-population data in dSphs. We apply the mehod to new spectroscopic data for twenty six stars in the recently-discovered Canes Venatici I (CVn I) dSph, obtained with the GMOS-N spectroscope on the Gemini North telescope. We use these data to investigate the recent claim of the presence of two dynamically different stellar populations in this system (Ibata et al., 2006). While we find no evidence for kinematically distinct sub-populations in our sample, we also show that the available kinematic data sets in CVn I might be too small to draw robust conclusions about its sub-populations. Second, we introduce a Markov Chain Monte Carlo based method for studying the dynamics of dSphs. We perform a large number of N-body simulations of the Carina dSph, modelling it with different dark matter halo profiles in the presence of tidal interactions. We show that due to the uncertainties in the data, it is possible to find several good models that can match Carina?s observed data. We show the differences in the mass, density, compactness and orbital eccentricities that result from different split power halo profiles, as well as mass follows light models. Finally, using high resolution re-simulations of some of our best models, we show the robustness of our results and perform a more detailed analysis of the models, looking at their mass evolution, and general tidal signatures that should be looked for in future observations.

Book Internal Kinematics and Stellar Populations of Dwarf Early type Galaxies in the Coma Cluster

Download or read book Internal Kinematics and Stellar Populations of Dwarf Early type Galaxies in the Coma Cluster written by Ana Matković and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In this dissertation, we characterize the dwarf early-type galaxies (dE/dS0s) in the Coma cluster based on their internal kinematics (velocity dispersion [sigma]) and properties of their underlying stellar populations. We derive scaling relations of dEs including the luminosity--velocity dispersion (L- [sigma] the Faber-Jackson relation), color--[sigma], line strength index--[sigma], age-metallicity, and relations between age, metallicity and [alpha/Fe] with velocity dispersion. We also assess how these relations are affected by cluster environment. Our galaxy sample consists of 74 early-type galaxies in the 30 [arcmin] diameter region in the center of the Coma cluster and 48 early-type galaxies in a 1 degree region centered around NGC 4839, a region believed to be infalling into the cluster. We measure velocity dispersions and line strength indices for these galaxies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documen tation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 33 records literature published in 1983 and received before August 1, 1983. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are included too. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. We also express our gratitude to all organizations, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. Starting with Volume 33, all the recording, correction, and data processing work was done by means of computers. The recording was done by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Mona El-Choura, Ms. Monika Kohl, and Ms. Sylvia Matyssek. Mr. Martin Schlotelburg and Mr. Ulrich Uberall supported our task by careful proofreading. It is a pleasure to thank them all for their encouragement. Book Internal Kinematics of CFRS Galaxies at Z 0 6

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internal kinematics of a galaxy are closely related to its dynamical mass, and can help place constraints an the type of galaxy that is being observed; in particular, different types of galaxies show characteristic scaling relations of size and velocity width [sigma]'v', or rotation velocity 'Vrot'. In principle, these scaling relations provide clues about the nature of a galaxy independently of any changes in luminosity or morphology that may be caused by bursts of star formation. This thesis is based on a study of the internal kinematics of luminous starforming galaxies in the 0 'z' 0.8 range, with the aim of investigating the nature of the blue galaxies which cause the largest changes in the luminosity function at 'z' = 0.5. New kinematic data are analysed for a sample of 30 galaxies from the Canada-France Redshift Survey, most of them with rest-frame ('U' - ' V')'AB' = 1/2. Unlike most previous studies, target galaxies were selected 'regardless' of size and morphology, from a well-studied magnitude-limited survey (the CFRS). Our sample is therefore representative of the most rapidly changing 1/3 of the galaxy population in the 0

Book Dwarf Galaxies Keys to Galaxy Formation and Evolution

Download or read book Dwarf Galaxies Keys to Galaxy Formation and Evolution written by Polychronis Papaderos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dwarf galaxy research constitutes an extremely vibrant field of astrophysical research, with many long-standing questions still unsettled and new ones constantly arising. The intriguing diversity of the dwarf galaxy population, observed with advanced ground-based and space-borne observatories over a wide spectral window providing an unprecedented level of detail, poses new challenges for both observers and theoreticians. The aim of this symposium was to bring together these two groups to exchange ideas and new results on the many evolutionary aspects of and open issues concerning dwarf galaxies. The main topics addressed include: the birth of dwarf galaxies: theoretical concepts and observable relics across wavelengths and time, the morphological, structural and chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies, possible evolutionary connections between early-type and late-type dwarfs, the star formation history of dwarf galaxies and its dependence on intrinsic and environmental properties, the origin and implications of starburst activity in dwarf galaxies, the fate of dwarfish systems born out of tidally ejected matter in galaxy collisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Atlas provides a complete set of images of Local Group Galaxies (excluding the three for which identification atlases are already in print) and shows the most important objects, including many thousands of individual stars and interstellar objects. It is unique in its coverage and format and provides a source of these fundamental data that will be used for many years. Researchers, students and even amateur astronomers will be able to use the Atlas to identify and study the various components of the nearly 30 important galaxies covered by the Atlas. The objects identified on the more than 200 charts include variable stars, globular star clusters, open star clusters, stellar associations, emission regions, supernova remnants, planetary nebulae and dust clouds. Each galaxy is accompanied by an extensive bibliography.

Book From the Realm of the Nebulae to Populations of Galaxies

Download or read book From the Realm of the Nebulae to Populations of Galaxies written by Mauro D'Onofrio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to outline possible future directions in galaxy research, this book wants to be a short stopover, a moment of self-reflection of the past century of achievements in this area. Since the pioneering years of galaxy research in the early 20th century, the research on galaxies has seen a relentless advance directly connected to the parallel exponential growth of new technologies. Through a series of interviews with distinguished astronomers the editors provide a snapshot of the achievements obtained in understanding galaxies. While many initial questions about their nature have been addressed, many are still open and require new efforts to achieve a solution. The discussions may reveal paradigms worthwhile revisiting. With the help of some of those scientists who have contributed to it, the editors sketch the history of this scientific journey and ask them for inspirations for future directions of galaxy research.
