Book Propellants and Explosives

Download or read book Propellants and Explosives written by Naminosuke Kubota and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-02-27 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the classic on the thermochemistry of combustion now features five new chapters and updated coverage of significant recent developments in the field. Addressing both experimental as well as theoretical aspects, the book covers the thermochemical and combustion characteristics of all important types of energetic materials, such as explosives, propellants, and the new class of pyrolants, as well as related phenomena. It presents the fundamental bases of the energetics of materials, deflagration and detonation, thermochemical process of decomposition and combustion, plus combustion wave structures. The book also goes on to discuss the combustion mechanisms of various types of energetic materials, propellants, and explosives, based on the heat transfer process in the combustion waves. The burning rate models are also presented as an aid to understanding the rate-controlling steps of combustion processes, thus demonstrating the relationships of burning rate versus pressure and initial temperature. As a major topic new to this edition, new propulsion methods such as duct rockets, ramjets, pulse motors and thrusters are described in detail, while appendices on flow field dynamics and shock wave propagation have been added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For centuries fireworks have been a source of delight and amazement in cultures around the world. But what produces their dazzling array of effects? This book takes you behind the scenes to explore the chemistry and physics behind the art of pyrotechnics. Topics covered include history and characteristics of gunpowder; principles behind each of the most popular firework types: rockets, shells, fountains, sparklers, bangers, roman candles and wheels; special effects, including sound effects, coloured smokes and electrical firing; firework safety for private use and displays; and firework legislation. The Chemistry of Fireworks is aimed at students with A level qualifications or equivalent. The style is concise and easy to understand, and the theory of fireworks is discussed in terms of well-known scientific concepts wherever possible. It will also be a useful source of reference for anyone studying pyrotechnics as applied to fireworks. Review Extracts ""a worthwhile addition to the pyrotechnist's library"" Fireworks ""a useful source of information which makes absorbing reading."" Angewandte Chemie, International Edition"

Download or read book Ballistics written by Donald E. Carlucci and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even the earliest weapon developers faced the need to understand how and why guns and ammunition work in order to improve their effectiveness. As weapons became more sophisticated, the field of ballistics naturally divided into three main areas of specialization: interior, exterior, and terminal ballistics. Providing unique coverage of all three ar

Book The Effects of Propellant Grain Fracture on the Interior Ballistics of Guns

Download or read book The Effects of Propellant Grain Fracture on the Interior Ballistics of Guns written by G. E. Keller and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-phase flow interior ballistic code XNOVAKTC (XKTC) has been modified to include the effects of propellant grain fracture. An increase in propellant surface is related to the level of intergranular stress in the propellant bed, caused either by local bed compaction associated with the ignition wave or by grain impact against, most likely, the projectile base. The user specifies the increase in propellant surface to be associated with the level of intergranular stress. An increase in local gas production follows directly from the increase in burning surface; interphase heat transfer and drag may similarly be linked to intergranular stress. This improved XKTC is used to illustrate the interior ballistic effects of grain fracture for two charges at two temperatures. Pressure waves in guns have long been linked to localized ignition and the distribution of ullage in the chamber; propellant fracture resulting from associated increases in intergranular stress are shown in this study to provide a link to higher breech pressures as well. Book Solid Rocket Propulsion Technology

Download or read book Solid Rocket Propulsion Technology written by A. Davenas and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a translation of the French title Technologie des Propergols Solides, offers otherwise unavailable information on the subject of solid propellants and their use in rocket propulsion. The fundamentals of rocket propulsion are developed in chapter one and detailed descriptions of concepts are covered in the following chapters. Specific design methods and the theoretical physics underlying them are presented, and finally the industrial production of the propellant itself is explained. The material used in the book has been collected from different countries, as the development of this field has occurred separately due to the classified nature of the subject. Thus the reader not only has an overall picture of solid rocket propulsion technology but a comprehensive view of its different developmental permutations worldwide.

Download or read book Ballistics written by Beat P. Kneubuehl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides comprehensive, practice-oriented coverage of ballistics. It explains the principles and calculation methods for the main four areas of ballistics, regardless of calibre, drawing on numerous facts, observations and examples from the authors decades of experience. Interior ballistics: The characteristics of explosive materials (detonating agents and propellants), methods for calculating gas pressure and the velocity of projectiles and rockets during the acceleration phase, alternative systems for accelerating projectiles and the acceleration of fragments. Intermediate ballistics: The dynamics of the moment at which the projectile leaves the muzzle and propellant gas is ejected from the barrel, effects on the person or structure supporting the weapon and approaches to resolving questions regarding shots from close range in criminology and forensic medicine. Exterior ballistics: The forces acting on a projectile and methods for calculating them, models for calculating trajectories (including the ballistic coefficient), gyroscopic projectile stabilization theory and aerodynamic optimization of projectiles. Terminal ballistics: Empirically-derived facts and data. The principles of ballistic protection design, ballistic testing problems and possible solutions and a comprehensive discussion of ricochets a matter of considerable importance in forensics. The book is intended for ballisticians, military personnel, police officers, criminologists, shooting range specialists, sport shooters, hunters and anyone else with an interest in ballistics. Beat P. Kneubuehl holds a PhD in forensic science and a masters degree in mathematics. For 33 years he was head of the Ballistic Science Unit at the Ballistics, Weapons and Ammunition Test Centre of the Swiss Ministry of Defence. He developed key ballistics software and frequently played a leading role in range tests involving every calibre of munition. He devoted himself to the problems of ballistic protection and the effects of projectiles under the auspices of the European Committee for Standardization and of NATO. After completing a doctorate in forensic science, he added forensic ballistics to his field of activity. His earlier publications include the standard work Wound Ballistics: Basics and Applications (also published by Springer-Verlag).
