Book The Psychology of World Religions and Spiritualities

Download or read book The Psychology of World Religions and Spiritualities written by Timothy A. Sisemore and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium of introductory essays invites scholars and clinicians to better understand people of various faiths from around the world. It is intended to correct the tendency among scientists to study religious behavior without accounting for its human dimension. For example: a psychologist describes a religious ceremony in a certain community as a "sociological phenomenon." Such a technical description is likely to strike members of that community as an attempt by science to explain away their beliefs. This is counterproductive. In order to work effectively and empathetically with people of faith, psychologists should seek an intimate knowledge of how religion operates in the hearts and minds of living, breathing human beings. With this goal in mind, editors Timothy Sisemore and Joshua Knabb have made one of the world’s major religions the subject of a separate chapter. In addition, they have arranged for each chapter to be written by a psychologist who practices—or is culturally connected with—that religion. This marks the book’s unique contribution to the field: it is the product of people who have lived the world’s religions, not merely studied them. By taking such a respectful approach, the book promotes an appreciation for the ways that religious belief animates, inspires, and instructs its adherents. Moreover, the indigenous point-of-view of these essays will help scholars identify their own biases when researching religious groups, allowing them to produce more accurate and holistic analyses. Psychologists understand that religion and spirituality provide meaning and purpose to billions of people around the globe. But the actual experience of these beliefs eludes the grasp of the reductionistic methods of science. With this resource at their side, psychologists in academic and clinical settings will be equipped to understand religious experience from the bottom-up, and honor the beliefs and practices of the people they are trying to help.

They gain muscle mass through weight training but find that their sports performance suffers. They reach a target weight by following a strict diet but feel bloated or tired. They appear to be in great shape but consistently underperform because of mental stress. We need to know how to balance the different training variables available to us in order to achieve and sustain optimum fitness and performance in our lives. In Dynamic Balance, authors Andy (Tsz Chiu) Chan and Stella (Yat Kwan) Wong show why the rigors of Western approaches to training often create imbalances in our physical and mental health. They explain traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) principles and techniques in simple terms and demonstrate how incorporating TCM into our lifestyle and workouts can help us perform at our best and be at our healthiest. TCM is not a myth or weird alternative to real medicine but an ancient practice that’s based in science and relevant to us today. In this book, you’ll learn how to: • evaluate the current state of your body and figure out your constitution type • find the root causes of your imbalances • adapt your diet and workouts • strengthen your breathing and develop harmony in your movements • make better-informed decisions about your health Your body and fitness needs are dynamic and always changing, as are the situations in the world around you. Book Geospatial Computational Methods

Download or read book Geospatial Computational Methods written by John N. Hatzopoulos and published by BrownWalker Press. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for students and professionals involved in Geospatial Computations and related areas such as Geomatics, Surveying Engineering, Geoinformatics, Geospatial Information Science and Technology (GIS&T), Geography, Geology, Agriculture, and Geointelligence. More emphasis is given to using scientific methods and tools materialized in algorithms and software to produce practical results. Specifically, algorithms such as error analysis of measurements and the least squares adjustment method to obtain ground coordinates of points with their reliability to construct the geometric framework of the geographical space necessary for various geospatial applications such as a Geographic Information System (GIS) are discussed. Other algorithms involve interpolation methods for DEM and spatial data analysis. Furthermore, such algorithms in the geospatial area are basic surveying methods using a total station, photogrammetry, digital terrain modeling, GNSS, augmented reality, coordinate transformations, map projections, and interpolation. Most algorithms are implemented into 27 educational computer programs and necessary data to understand GIS&T operations from the inside with a didactics approach targeting to become more intelligent than machines. The educational programs include general photogrammetric operations with aerial photography and drones, 3-D surveying network adjustment, GNSS navigation solutions, and many others. This approach helps to obtain high-quality scientific and technological bases, which in turn enhance the ability to exploit and use most tools and functions of existing GIS&T systems and, therefore, to be highly competitive as a professional in the market. This book has ten chapters such as Measurements and Errors Estimation and Accuracy Standards, Specialized Numerical Methods, Error Propagation & Least Squares Adjustment, Condition Method and Generalized Least Squares, Applications to Map Projections and Transformation of Coordinates, Applications to Surveying Networks, Applications of Computational Methods in Photogrammetry, Digital Elevation Models (DEM), Computer Programming – Scripting & AI.

Book The Harmony of Goodness

Download or read book The Harmony of Goodness written by Mary Beth Ingham and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Harmony of Goodness, Mary Beth presents the ethical vision of John Duns Scotus (1265-1308) in an integrated manner, bringing together aspects of virtue, moral reasoning, free choice, rational judgment, and spirituality as parts of a whole human life. As Ingham writes, "My own reading of Scotus has been informed by his concern to speak of the morally good act as a beautiful work of art, and of the moral agent as a formed artist. I examine the moral philosophy of John Duns Scotus as if it were a wind chime: composed of several independent elements, all interrelated in such a way that their mutual interaction produces the harmony which is goodness" (Introduction, xiv). This work examines the ethical thought of Scotus according to his notion of mutuality or relationship. It is this basic concept, and not freedom, which offers a fruitful avenue for discovery of the contemporary relevance of this Franciscan philosopher-theologian. This study brings to light Scotus' integrated vision of human moral living.

Book The Alchemy of Sexual Energy

Download or read book The Alchemy of Sexual Energy written by Mantak Chia and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-12-23 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taoist techniques for replenishing our internal energy with universal cosmic energy • Shows how to transform excess sexual energy (Ching Chi) into self-healing energy • Presents advanced Cosmic Healing Chi Kung practices, which gather the limitless resources of Cosmic Chi for healing • Explains how opening of the three tan tiens to the six directions allows personal consciousness to connect directly to higher sources of energy Taoists consider our sexual energy to be the creative force that we can use to regenerate the body’s internal energy, but we must learn how to harness excess sexual energy and transform it into chi, or life-force energy. When we circulate the sexual energy in the Microcosmic Orbit--a continuous energy loop that runs up the spine and down the front of the body--we transform it into self-healing energy that can be stored in the organs and the three tan tiens: energy centers in the brain, the heart center, and the lower abdomen. The Alchemy of Sexual Energy builds upon Microcosmic Orbit practices discussed in Healing Light of the Tao. The more we open the flow of our internal energy the more capable we are of connecting to the cosmic energy that exists outside ourselves in the universe. By learning to open the three tan tiens to the six directions, the Taoist practitioner combines mind power with extension of chi to draw cosmic energy into the body. This energy, too, can be stored in the three tan tiens and used as needed for healing. When we learn to flow in this way with the energy of the Tao, life ceases to be a struggle.

Book Meanest Foundations and Nobler Superstructures

Download or read book Meanest Foundations and Nobler Superstructures written by Ofer Gal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hooke's Programme was revolutionary both cosmologically and mathematically. It presented 'the celestial motions", the proverbial symbol of stability and immutability, as a process of continuous change and prescribed only parameters of rectilinear motions and rectilinear attractions for calculating their closed curved orbits. Yet the traces of Hooke's construction of his Programme for the heavens lead through his investigations in such earthly disciplines as microscopy, practical optics and horology, and the mathematical tools developed by Newton to accomplish it appear no less local and goal-oriented than Hooke's lenses and springs.".

Book excerpt: People throughout time and place, no matter their belief system, have sought to discover causes and cures for illness and disease. Among Westerners is a groundswell to augment biomedicine with holistic practices inherent in ethnomedicines of non-Western traditions. Yet missing are awareness and knowledge of the foundations and outgrowth of these alternative concepts. Erickson fills this gap by clearly explaining the basic organizing principles that underlie all medical systems, the full range of theories of disease causation, the geographical distribution of medical practices, and the historical trends that led to biomedical dominance. Her efficient, balanced approach highlights commonalities among the worlds vast and diverse medical systems, making ethnomedicine easier to internalize and to apply in clinical settings.

Book Virtues Abounding

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark O’Keefe OSB
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2019-01-18
  • ISBN : 1532644205
  • Pages : 117 pages

Download or read book Virtues Abounding written by Mark O’Keefe OSB and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living a morally good life today is a challenge. But we become fully and authentically human precisely by the decisions we make every day--some of them relatively simple, others complex and difficult. Once a choice is made, we still must claim the moral resolve and strength of character to implement it. Virtues are precisely the sustained habits that help us maneuver life's many choices and to become the good people that we want to be. St. Thomas Aquinas offers the classic Christian presentation of the four principal virtues of prudence, justice, courage, and temperance. But these are precisely cardinal or "hinge" virtues that provide the foundational framework for Aquinas's much broader presentation of a multitude of other virtues. Neglect of this larger array of moral attitudes for good living would miss the breadth of Aquinas's insights into a human life truly well-lived. Virtues Abounding explores, in contemporary language, the practical insights that Aquinas offers for the moral life today. Whether in university, seminary, or adult faith formation settings--whether for a deeper intellectual understanding of virtues or for personal reflection and growth--Virtues Abounding will provide new insight into a classic but too often overlooked storehouse of moral riches.

Book Autonomy Unbound

Download or read book Autonomy Unbound written by Paul Barry Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume examines how the question of autonomy has come to be of recent interest in political theory. The author argues that autonomy goes deep into the Western consciousness and is a part of our very mode of being. He suggests that while autonomy is not universal, once tasted it becomes ineradicable. Autonomy runs deeper than is often thought and this book shows that while autonomy is unique to Western consciousness and to democracy, it raises and examines the question as to whether autonomy is either universally necessary or necessary to democracy.
