Dennoch ist es sinnvoll, von einer medial reflexiven Literatur erst seit dem audiovisuellen Jahrhundert zu sprechen, dem des Films. Medientransformationen sind seitdem nicht allein paradigmatische Wechsel der Systeme, sondern auch Vervielfältigungen durch die Pluralität der medialen Träger. Neben allgemeineren Fragestellungen und theoretischen Bestimmungen steht das Wechselverhältnis von Text, Bild und Musik im Zentrum detaillierter Untersuchungen. Der intermedialen Performanz ist ein weiterer Teil des Bandes gewidmet, der schließlich die Brücke zu Film und Fernsehen schlägt. Das Buch geht zurück auf eine bilaterale Tagung in Ithaca, NY, an der Cornell University. Partner und Mitveranstalter war die Universität Bremen. Hinzu kamen in Fragen der Inter- und Transmedialität einschlägig ausgewiesene Wissenschaftler aus den USA und aus Deutschland. Enthalten sind vierzehn Beiträge in deutscher und sechs in englischer Sprache. Vereint werden ganz unterschiedliche Positionen der amerikanischen und europäischen Intermedialitätsforschung. Gerade diese Heterogenität ist eine Stärke der vorliegenden Publikation. Zusätzlich liefern die Herausgeber eine neuartige Kategorisierung und Begrifflichkeit und bedienen so ein weiter steigendes Interesse in den Literatur-, Medien- und Kulturwissenschaften. Book excerpt: Theatre is traditionally considered a live medium but its ‘liveness’ can no longer simply be taken for granted in view of the increasing mediatisation of the stage. Drawing on theories of intermediality, Liveness on Stage explores how performances that incorporate film or video self-reflexively stage and challenge their own liveness by contrasting or approximating live and mediatised action. To illustrate this, the monograph investigates key aspects such as ‘ephemerality’, ‘co-presence’, ‘unpredictability’, ‘interaction’ and ‘realistic representation’ and highlights their significance for re-evaluating received notions of liveness. The analysis is based on productions by Gob Squad, Forkbeard Fantasy, Station House Opera, Proto-type Theater, Tim Etchells and Mary Oliver. In their playful approaches these practitioners predominantly present such media combination as a means of cross-fertilisation rather than as an antagonism between liveness and mediatisation. Combining an original theoretical approach with an in-depth analysis of the selected productions, this study will appeal to scholars and practitioners of theatre and performance as well as to those researching intermedial phenomena.

Both are part of a culture, represent a culture, and subvert a culture. Yet at the same time, they appear to be medial antagonists: one is kinetic and multimedial, the other (often) verbal and seemingly mono-medial. What happens, however, when both meet; when movement is integrated into the literary world or even replaces verbal communication? Dance is artistic and popular, traditional and innovative, bodily and ephemeral. It holds cultural and kinetic information in a nutshell and thus brings movement and cultural history into a text. Shakespeare’s plays, Restoration comedy, 19th century caricature, popular and elitist theatre, all make use of dance as special means of signification. Thus, this study explores dance in British literature from Shakespeare to Yeats, and illustrates the many ways in which these two forms of artistic expression can enter into various kinds of intermedial encounters and cultural alliances.

Book excerpt: Why do literary theorists see reading as an act of dispassionate textual analysis and meaning production, when historical evidence shows that readers have often read excessively, obsessively, and for sensory stimulation? Posing these and other questions, this is the first major work to bring insights from book history to bear on literary history and theory. In so doing, the book charts a compelling and innovative history of theories of reading. While literary theorists have greatly contributed to our understanding of the text-reader relation, they have rarely taken into account that the relation between a book and a reader is also a relation between two bodies: one made of paper and ink, the other flesh and blood. This is why, Karin Littau argues, we need to look beyond the words on the page, and pay attention to the technical innovations in the physical format of the book. Only then is it possible to understand more fully how media technology has changed our experience of reading, and why media history presents a challenge to our conceptions of what reading is. Each chapter places the reader in specific disciplinary and historical contexts: literature, criticism, philosophy, cultural history, bibliography, film, new media. Overall, the history recounted in this book points to a split between modern literary study which regards reading as a reducibly mental activity, and a tradition reaching back to antiquity which assumed that reading was not only about sense-making but also about sensation. Theories of Reading: Books, Bodies and Bibliomania will be essential reading for all students and scholars of literary theory and history as well as of great interest to students of the history of the book and new media.

The authors explore the wide range of aesthetic, literary-theoretical and philosophical issues associated with this rhetorical device, not only in terms of its original meta-theatrical setting – from the baroque idea of a theatrum mundi onward to contemporary examples of postmodern self-referential dramaturgy – but also with regard to a variety of different generic applications, e.g. in narrative fiction, musical theatre and film. The authors, internationally recognized specialists in their respective fields, draw on recent debates in such areas as postcolonial studies, game and systems theories, media and performance studies, to analyze the specific qualities and characteristics of the play within the play: as ultimate affirmation of the ‘self’ (the ‘Hamlet paradigm’), as a self-reflective agency of meta-theatrical discourse, and as a vehicle of intermedial and intercultural transformation. Metaization – the movement from a first cognitive, referential or communicative level to a higher one on which first-level phenomena self-reflexively become objects of reflection, reference and communication in their own right – is in fact a common feature not only of human thought and language but also of the arts and media in general. However, research into this issue has so far predominantly focussed on literature, where a highly differentiated, albeit strictly monomedial critical toolbox exists. Metareference across Media remedies this onesidedness and closes the gap between literature and other media by providing a transmedial framework for analysing metaphenomena. The essays transcend the current notion of metafiction, pinpoint examples of metareference in hitherto neglected areas, discuss the capacity for metaization of individual media or genres from a media-comparative perspective, and explore major (historical) forms and functions as well aspects of the development of metaization in cultural history. Stemming from diverse disciplinary and methodological backgrounds, the contributors propose new and refined concepts and models and cover a broad range of media including fiction, drama, poetry, comics, photography, film, computer games, classical as well as popular music, painting, and architecture. Awareness of the many significances of books as cultural and textual objects reshapes the traditional disciplines of textual theory, analytic bibliography, codicology and palaeography, while the advent of electronic books, and digital methods for representing print books, is introducing a new dimension to our understanding. Seven essays in this volume, ranging over medieval Portuguese and Swedish manuscripts, eighteenth-century Icelandic editions, Australian playtexts, Thackeray and Anita Brookner, and Stefan George, consider these questions from the broad perspective of textual scholarship. Texts may exist on the borderland of word and not-word; or they may spring from borderlands of nation or culture; or they may be considered from the margins of neighbouring disciplines. So readers must set the texts within contexts, to see the play of text against border. Essays in this volume explore different texts against varying backgrounds -- Pound's Cantos, Joyce's Ulysses, Trollope's An Eye for an Eye, Woolf's The Waves -- while essays by McGann and Lernout argue the dimensionality of text on the intersection of print and digital media. Implicit in all these essays is the contention, that textual scholarship must influence literary interpretation.
