Book excerpt: I propose that the intermediate neural mechanisms involved in face processing may be better understood by studying concentric form-from-structure integration. This dissertation involves behavioral adaptation and masking experiments that provide evidence regarding whether face perception and concentric form-from-structure perception engage a common processing mechanism. Despite faces being complex visual stimuli, humans are able to perceive and identify faces rapidly. Studies of face perception strongly suggest that this ability involves processing the arrangement of the face features. Although high-level aspects of face perception have been studied extensively, less is known about the intermediate mechanisms involved in face processing. Converging evidence has shown that concentric form-from-structure perception involves processing the arrangement of the features and that face-sensitive mid- and high-level visual regions may be involved. I used visual adaptation and visual masking experiments to test this hypothesis. My data show that masking with, but not adaptation to, concentric form-from-structure stimuli impairs face discrimination. The results of this thesis provide evidence that concentric form-from-structure and face perception may share a common processing mechanism.

As such, the development of face perception comprises multiple skills, including sensory (e.g., mechanisms of holistic, configural and featural perception), cognitive (e.g., memory, processing speed, attentional control), and also emotional and social (e.g., reading and interpreting facial expression) domains. Whereas our understanding of specific functional domains involved in face perception is growing, there is further pressing demand for a multidisciplinary approach toward a more integrated view, describing how face perception ability relates to and develops with other domains of sensory and cognitive functioning. In this research topic we bring together a collection of papers that provide a shot of the current state of the art of theorizing and investigating face perception from the perspective of multiple ability domains. We would like to thank all authors for their valuable contributions that advanced our understanding of face and emotion perception across development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic faces are highly complex, ecologically and socially relevant stimuli which we encounter almost everyday. When and what we extract from this rich source of information needs to be well coordinated by the face perception system. The current thesis investigates how this coordination is achieved. Part I comprises two psychophysical experiments examining the mechanisms underlying facial motion processing. Facial motion is represented as high-dimensional spatio-temporal data defining which part of the face is moving in which direction over time. Previous studies suggest that facial motion can be adequately represented using simple approximations. I argue against the use of synthetic facial motion by showing that the face perception system is highly sensitive towards manipulations of the natural spatio-temporal characteristics of facial motion. The neural processes coordinating facial motion processing may rely on two mechanisms: first, a sparse but meaningful spatio-temporal code representing facial motion; second, a mechanism that extracts distinctive motion characteristics. Evidence for the latter hypothesis is provided by the observation that facial motion, when performed in unconstrained contexts, helps identity judgments. Part II presents a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study investigating the neural processing of expression and identity information in dynamic faces. Previous studies proposed a distributed neural system for face perception which distinguishes between invariant (e.g., identity) and changeable (e.g., expression) aspects of faces. Attention is a potential candidate mechanism to coordinate the processing of these two facial aspects. Two findings support this hypothesis: first, attention to expression versus identity of dynamic faces dissociates cortical areas assumed to process changeable aspects from those involved in discriminating invariant aspects of faces; second, attention leads to a more precise neural representation of the attended facial feature. Interactions between these two representations may be mediated by a part of the inferior occipital gyrus and the superior temporal sulcus which is supported by the observation that the latter area represented both expression and identity, while the first represented identity information irrespective of the attended feature.

This has also been achieved thanks to non-invasive neuroimaging techniques such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetoencephalography (MEG), Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). However, there is still much debate about the cognitive and neural mechanisms of face perception. In the current “Research Topic” we plan to gather experimental works, opinions, commentaries, mini-reviews and reviews that focus on new or novel theories and methods in face perception research. Where is the field at the moment? Do we need to re-think the experimental procedures we have adopted so far? Again, what kind of techniques (or combination of them) and analysis methods will be important in the future? From the experimental point of view we encourage both behavioural and neuroimaging contributions (e.g., fMRI, EEG, MEG, DTI and TMS). Despite the main emphasis on face perception, memory and identification, we will also consider original works that focus on other aspects of face processing, such as expression recognition, attractiveness judgments and face imagery. In addition, animal investigations and experimental manipulations that alter face recognition abilities in typical human subjects (e.g., hypnosis) are also welcome. Overall, we are proposing a Research Topic that looks at face processing using different perspectives and welcome contributions from different domains such as psychology, neurology, neuroscience, cognitive science and philosophy. The current “Research Topic” evolved over the desire to acknowledge the relatively recent loss of three giants in the field: Drs. Shlomo Bentin, Truett Allison and Andy Calder. We dedicate this “Research Topic” to them and their pioneering studies.

The tests assess low-level aspects of visual perception (using same-different matching of basic perceptual features, such as orientation, length, position and object size), intermediate visual processes (e.g., matching objects different in viewpoint), access to stored perceptual knowledge about objects (object decision), access to semantic knowledge (function and associative matches) and access to names from object (picture naming). BORB will serve as an invaluable companion test battery to the PALPA test of language ability.

Book excerpt: Faces are extraordinarily rich sources of information, revealing a person's identity, emotions, or intentions. Apart from biological and social relevance, empirical data suggest that processing mechanisms involved in face perception are different from those mediating other classes of objects. In three studies presented here mechanisms involved in face perception were examined by identifying processing paths activated by internal (eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth) and external (hair, head and face outline, ears) facial features. Based on the evidence gained in the studies it was possible to tap distinct processing paths for internal and external features, and to draw conclusions about their interaction in producing a facial percept. By identifying temporal intervals for global featural information on the one hand, and detailed featural and configural information on the other, evidence for hypothetical processing stages, separated by temporal order, has been found. The results point to the existence of distinct modes of face processing, and contribute to the current debate about the role of featural and configural facial information, with weight laid on the time course of perception.
