Book A Risk Management Strategy for PCB Contaminated Sediments

Download or read book A Risk Management Strategy for PCB Contaminated Sediments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-07 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a risk-based framework for developing and implementing strategies to manage PCB-contaminated sediments at sites around the country. The framework has seven stages, beginning with problem definition, continuing through assessment of risks and management options, and ending with an evaluation of the success of the management strategy. At the center of the framework is continuous and active involvement of all affected parties-particularly communities-in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the management strategy. A Risk-Management Strategy for PCB-Contaminated Sediments emphasizes the need to consider all risks at a contaminated site, not just human health and ecological effects, but also the social, cultural, and economic impacts. Given the controversy that has arisen at many PCB-contaminated sites, this book provides a consistent, yet flexible, approach for dealing with the many issues associated with assessing and managing the risks at Superfund and other contaminated sites.

Book Canadian Water Quality Guidelines for Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Coastal and Estuarine Waters

Download or read book Canadian Water Quality Guidelines for Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Coastal and Estuarine Waters written by Dwayne R. J. Moore and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A literature review was conducted on the physical and chemical properties of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBS), their concentrations in the marine environment, their fate and persistence, their bioaccumulation, and their toxicity to marine biota. The information is summarized in this publication. From it, a Canadian water quality guideline is developed for PCBs to ensure the protection and maintenance of marine aquatic biota"--Abstract.

Book Sediment Quality Assessment

Download or read book Sediment Quality Assessment written by Graeme Batley and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contaminated sediments represent an ongoing threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. The assessment of sediment quality is, therefore, an important concern for environmental regulators. Sediment quality guidelines are now well established in regulatory frameworks worldwide; however, practical guidance that covers all of the key aspects of sediment quality assessment is not readily available. In 2005, CSIRO published its highly cited Handbook for Sediment Quality Assessment. In the ensuing period, the science has advanced considerably. This practical guide is a revised and much expanded second edition, which will be a valuable tool for environmental practitioners. Written by experts in the field, it provides coverage of: sediment sampling; sample preparation; chemical analysis; ecotoxicology; bioaccumulation; biomarkers; and ecological assessment. In addition, detailed appendices describe protocols for many of the tests to be used.

Book Development of the Ontario Provincial Sediment Quality Guidelines for PCBs and the Organochlorine Pesticides

Download or read book Development of the Ontario Provincial Sediment Quality Guidelines for PCBs and the Organochlorine Pesticides written by R. Jaagumagi and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details the derivation of provincial sediment quality guidelines for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine compounds, and summarises the data used to derive these values. The guidelines set out in the document are intended for the protection of aquatic biological resources and have defined three levels of ecotoxic effects (no-effect, lowest effect, and severe effect). The document also summarises the fate of the organochlorine compounds and PCBs in sediments and provides the necessary details of the calculations of the sediment quality guidelines. Compounds covered in the guidelines include aldrin, benzene hexachloride, dieldrin, endrin, hexachlorobenzene, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, and mirex, in addition to PCBs.

Download or read book PAHs written by Peter E. T. Douben and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), or polyarenes, are one of the largest and most structurally diverse class of organic molecules known. High percentages of polyarenes, representing a wide range of molecular sizes and structural types, are present in coal tars and petroleum residues. The major sources of PAHs are crude oil, coal and oil shale. The fuels produced from these fossil sources constitute the primary source of energy for the industrial nations of the world, and the petrochemicals from these raw materials are the basis of the synthetic fibre and plastics industries. PAHs are however, widespread pollutants and their impact on the environment and human health must be monitored and controlled. This book will review and assess our scientific understanding of the ecological exposure and effects PAHs have in different environments and habitats. It will accomplish this by taking the recipients of the pollution in the environment as starting points and working its way back through pathways to access what is required for our understanding of effects and rationale for control. Although this book will concentrate on ecological exposure of PAHs, the general impacts of PAHs on human populations will be touched upon. It is thought to be the first book to focus on the ecological aspects of PAHs.
