Book Selected Papers on Language and the Brain

Download or read book Selected Papers on Language and the Brain written by N. Geschwind and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers of science work not only with the methods of the sciences but with their contents as well. Substantive issues concerning the relation between mind and matter, between the material basis and the functions of cognition, have been central within the entire history of philosophy. We recall such philosophers as Aristotle, Descartes, the early Kant, Ernst Mach, and the early William James as directly inquiring of the organs and structures of thinking. Science and its philosophical self-criticism are especially and deeply united in the effort to understand the biological brain and human behavior, and so it requires no apology to include this collection of clinical studies among Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science. The work of Dr. Norman Geschwind, well represented in this selection, explores the relation between structure and function, between the anatomy of the brain and the 'higher' behavior of men and women. As a clinical neurologist, Geschwind was led to these studies particularly by his in terest in those pathologies which have to do with human perception and language. His research into the anatomical substrates of specific dis orders-and strikingly the aphasias -present a fascinating and provocative examination of fundamental questions which will concern not neurologists alone but also psychologists, physicians, linguists, speech pathologists, educators, anthropologists, historians of medicine, and philosophers, among others, namely all those interested in the characteristic modes of human activity, in speech, in perception, and in the learning process generally.

Book Foundations of Cognitive Processes

Download or read book Foundations of Cognitive Processes written by Robert W. Thatcher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-18 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, this title describes the basic structure and function of the brain, as well as the highest cognitive functions, using data from various disciplines to detail ways in which behaviorally relevant functions are mediated by the neural systems. Among the topics discussed are the neurophysiology of emotion, the chemical basis of memory, daily subjective experience and psychopathology, and information representation. A major purpose of this volume was to provide the student not only with a sound foundation in functional neuroscience, but also to equip them with a detailed understanding of how these facts and methods can be applied to clinical problems.

Book Language Processing in Bilinguals RLE Linguistics C Applied Linguistics

Download or read book Language Processing in Bilinguals RLE Linguistics C Applied Linguistics written by Jyotsna Vaid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, bilingualism has resisted definition. If bilingualism is defined as habitual, fluent, correct and accent-free use of two languages, few individuals would qualify as bilinguals. A more viable approach may be to concede that ‘bilingual’ can be seen instead as a range of points on a continuum that allows for differences. The psychological study of bilingualism encompasses a wide range of phenomena including the organization and representation of the grammar, the perception and production of language mixing, cerebral lateralization of language functions, and patterns of recovery of aphasic patients. This book collects together an international array of researchers in experimental psychology, linguistics and neuropsychology, who bring their expertise to bear on the critical issues that are raised by the bilingual phenomena.

Book The Psychology of Left and Right

Download or read book The Psychology of Left and Right written by Michael C. Corballis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976, this title deals with the problem of how we tell left from right. The authors argue that the ability to tell left from right depends ultimately on a bodily asymmetry, such as preference for one or the other hand, or dominance of one side of the brain. This has implications for child development, reading disability, navigation, art, and culture.
