Book Interference Drag in a Simulated Wing fuselage Juncture

Download or read book Interference Drag in a Simulated Wing fuselage Juncture written by L. R. Kubendran and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interference drag in a wing fuselage juncture as simulated by a flat plate and a body of constant thickness having a 1.5:1 elliptical leading edge is evaluated experimentally. The experimental measurements consist of mean velocity data taken with a hot wire at a streamwise location corresponding to 16 body widths downstream of the body leading edge. From these data, the interference drag is determined by calculating the total momentum deficit (momentum area) in the juncture and also in the two dimensional turbulent boundary layers on the flat plate and body at locations sufficiently far from the juncture flow effect. The interference drag caused by the juncture drag as measured at this particular streamwise station is -3% of the total drag due to the flat plate and body boundary layers in isolation. If the body is considered to be a wing having a chord and span equal to 16 body widths, the interference drag due to the juncture is only -1% of the frictional drag of one surface of such a wing.

Book Reduction of Drag Due to Lift at Supersonic Speeds

Download or read book Reduction of Drag Due to Lift at Supersonic Speeds written by Douglas Aircraft Company and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: $EVERAL TOPICS RELATING TO THE REDUCTION OF DRAG DUE TO LIFT AT SUPERSONIC SPEEDS ARE DISCUSSED. The distribution of camber for optimial loading of diamond planform wings and some low drag geometries for rectangular wings are determined. It appears that substantial drag reduction, through the use of spanwise distribution of camber, may be achieved only for low reduced aspect ratios, M2-1 AR. The distribution of lift throughout volumes of prescribed shape is considered and some optimum distributions found for certain cases. It is shown that optimum spatial distributions of lift arc generally not unique. The possibility of using biplanes is explored and it is concluded that for non-interfering biplanes (wings acting as isolated monoplanes) there is an inherent structural advantage which is the result of a scale effect for geometrically similar structures The preacnt status of means for drag reduction is surveyed and the direction for further study indicated.

Book Influence of Compressibility on Interference Drag

Download or read book Influence of Compressibility on Interference Drag written by Sighard Hoerner and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Test of interference drag of a cross-type tail, carried out in the Heinkel-Werke high-speed wind tunnel, is evaluated in accordance with principles developed in a previous report UM 7810, "The influence of compressibility on drag." It was found that interference drag increases with the third power of Prandtl-factor in a manner similar to other pressure drags which are dependent on friction. A bibliography is included.

Book Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Support Interference on the Drag of Bodies of Revolution at a Mach Number of 1 5

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Support Interference on the Drag of Bodies of Revolution at a Mach Number of 1 5 written by Edward W. Perkins and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the results of an experimental investigation to determine the effects of support interference on the base drag and fore drage of two bodies of revolution. The results show that the rear supports affect the drag of a body of revolution through the immediate influence on the pressures acting over the rear portions of the body and thus the magnitude of the interference depends on the afterbody shape of the model, the Reynolds number of flow, and the condition of the boundary layer.

Book Advanced Aircraft Flight Performance

Download or read book Advanced Aircraft Flight Performance written by Antonio Filippone and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses aircraft flight performance, focusing on commercial aircraft but also considering examples of high-performance military aircraft. The framework is a multidisciplinary engineering analysis, fully supported by flight simulation, with software validation at several levels. The book covers topics such as geometrical configurations, configuration aerodynamics and determination of aerodynamic derivatives, weight engineering, propulsion systems (gas turbine engines and propellers), aircraft trim, flight envelopes, mission analysis, trajectory optimisation, aircraft noise, noise trajectories and analysis of environmental performance. A unique feature of this book is the discussion and analysis of the environmental performance of the aircraft, focusing on topics such as aircraft noise and carbon dioxide emissions.
