Book excerpt: 26th International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Volume 3: Analytical Chemistry is a collection of session lectures presented at the 26th International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry, held in Tokyo, Japan on September 4-10, 1977. This book is divided into six chapters and begins with the features of the general purpose microcomputer data system, which is a cost-effective means to bring the power of machine intelligence to a wide variety of chemical instruments. The succeeding chapters deal with the application of sequential as kinetics by relaxation and correlation NMR spectroscopy and the design of chelating ligands for metal buffering in aqueous solution. These topics are followed by a discussion of the applications of collisional activation/mass spectrometry to ion and molecular structure determination and to the analysis of complex mixtures. The last chapter describes the advantages and limitations of atomic fluorescence spectroscopy as a trace metal analytical technique. This book is of great value to analytical and organic chemists, researchers, and students.

Book Engymetry and Personal Computing in Nuclear Medicine

Download or read book Engymetry and Personal Computing in Nuclear Medicine written by Dietrich P. Pretschner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear ftedicine is not and has not been a purely imaging discipline. It is function analysis that has always been the focal pOint. This fact has become particularly obvious in the last few years through the employment of nev short-lived radionuclides, new technical procedures and data processing. The disadvantage of function analysis in Inclear ftedicine through the use of radioactively labeled compounds is that more and more complicated and expensive equipment his to be used. A further characteristic is that these machines are stationary, and that the patients cannot be examined under physiological conditions. For technical reasons the x-camera is developing in the direction of mea suring mainly the so-ca~led 'soft' I-emitters at the present time. On the other hand, positron emitters are the radionuclides which are of interest for metabolic functions. At present, positron cameras are even more e~pensive and complicated machines, the use of which is very demanding. In this book Priv. -Doz. Dr. med. Dipl. -Ing. D. Peter pretschner has described a new system which contains his ideas and his technical developments. He describes a solution to the urgent questions and dif ficulties in the employment of radioactive substances for diagnosis. It does not demand large resources and can be used under the appropri ate individual physiological conditions. Here he was helped by his training as a natural scientist and engineer, as well as by his being an experienced clinician.

Book excerpt: Computers are complex tools of the human species. To make them work well for us, we have to specify their actions in very great detail. When properly instructed, networks of computers take on the trappings of human social orders derived from the physiological characteristics and capabilities of our species. To create a social order, we engage in grouping mechanisms through which the actions of the individuals within the group are influenced. From a technical perspective, such grouping mechanisms form the trust environments within which we can effect policy. Historically, the most comprehensive such environments have been formed by religions. Within a specific religion, the policy framework is established by a statement of theology. So, if we connect all the dots, when we want to tell our computers how to act in a manner paralleling human social orders, we must define for them a theology. So goes the rationale explored in great detail by the authors of Computer Theology. Based on their combined tenure of almost a century working in the realms of computer systems and their ubiquitous networks, du Castel and Jurgensen have expressed both social and computer systems through the same concepts. The result offers a unique perspective on the interconnection between people and machines that we have come to understand as the World Wide Web.
